A novel laser Doppler linear encoder system (LDLE) has been developed at the Advanced Photon Source, Argonne National Laboratory A self-aligning 3-D multiple-reflection optical design was used for the laser Doppler displacement meter (LDDM) to extend the encoder system resolution. The encoder is compact [about 70 mm(H) x 100 mm(W) x 250 mm(L)] and it has sub-Angstrom resolution 100 mm/sec measuring speed, and 300 mm measuring range. Because the new device affords higher resolution, as compared with commercial laser interferometer systems, and yet cost less, it will have good potential for use in scientific and industrial applications.

A Finite-Difference Method in Non-Orthogonal Curvilinear Coordinate System (FDM-NOCCS) is the combination of the domain transformation technique and the Finite-Difference Method (FDM). It has the visualization and simplification of the traditional FDM. On the other hand. it overcomes the weakness of EDM in dealing with complicated boundary shapes, averts the interpolation between the grid points in the vicinities of boundaries, and also avoids the abnormalism in the transformation from the physical domain to the computational domain. The FDM-NOCCS is used in the computer aided design of electron gun for color cathode ray tube. Compared with the formal FDM, the FDM-NOCCS can save quite a lot of CPU time and computer memory. FDM-NOCCS works well with the complicated e-gun systems design.

The image quality, performance and long-term stability of an optical system depends on a number of factors including the optomechanical design, and fabrication and thermal stabilization methods used for making the optical components and support structures. The distortion of optics due to mounting and the differential thermal expansion as a result of temperature changes is by far the biggest sources of image degradation. In all-reflective and catadioptric systems consisting of spherical and aspherical mirrors, very small stress induced at the mounting interface can adversely degrade the surface figure of a mirror, thereby causing significant image distortion and a severe drop in the system MTF. This paper presents a number of design techniques for mirror mount, which have been successfully used to greatly reduce or isolate the mounting stresses and, thereby, resulting in a minimal degradation of mirror surface figure. Some of these methods include using flexures, dowel pins, precision machining of the interfaces, and providing cut-outs to isolate the stresses from clamping screws used for securing the mirrors to support structures. Various mounting design options are presented especially for diamond-machined metal mirrors.

256×256 diffractive microlens arrays have been designed by considering the independent optical and processing parameters for 3-5 μm wavelength with a microlens size of 100 μm. The lens F number and array pitch are 1.5 and 100 μm, respectively. The diffractive microlens arrays have been fabricated on the surface of Si substrates by successive photolithography and Ar+ ion-beam-etching technique. The practical processes and fabrication method are discussed. The optical characteristics and measurements of the diffractive microlens arrays are presented.

Microassembly and microadjustment techniques are key technologies in the industrial production of hybrid microelectromechanical systems. One focal point in current microproduction research and engineering is the design and development of high-precision microassembly and microadjustment equipment capable of operating within the framework of flexible automated industrial production. As well as these developments, suitable microassembly tools for industrial use also need to be equipped with interfaces for the supply and delivery of microcomponents. The microassembly process necessitates the supply of microparts in a geometrically defined manner. In order to reduce processing steps and production costs, there is a demand for magazines capable of providing free accessibility to the fixed microcomponents. Commonly used at present are feeding techniques, which originate from the field of semiconductor production. However none of these techniques fully meets the requirements of industrial microassembly technology. A novel modular magazine set, developed and tested in a joint project, is presented here. The magazines are able to hold microcomponents during cleaning, inspection and assembly without any additional handling steps. The modularity of their design allows for maximum technical flexibility. The modular magazine fits into currently practiced SEMI standards. The design and concept of the magazine enables industrial manufacturers to promote a cost-efficient and flexible precision assembly of microelectromechanical systems.

The objective of this paper is to report the recent developments in lightweight mirror technology that have occurred at Composite Optics, Incorporated (COI). The developments occurred as a result of the activities being conducted in support of the Next Generation Space Telescope (NGST), Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS), and Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) Programs. Our sponsors on these programs are the Marshall and Goddard Space Flight Centers and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The requirements, design approach, actual performance, and the technology status for each program are summarized in the following sections. The emergence of composite designs provides exciting potential for nontraditional, accurate, lightweight, stable, stiff, and high strength composite mirrors. This evolving technology promises significant improvement in reducing weight, cost and cycle time for future infrared, visible, and x-ray systems. Customers currently embracing composite mirror technology for radiometric use are already reaping substantial system performance benefits. Other customers interested in LIDAR, IR, visible, and grazing incidence x-ray applications are eagerly awaiting successful completion of current technology development and demonstration efforts.

For optical systems special anti-reflection (AR) coatings can be designed which reduce the reflectance for a high number of glasses at normal and non-normal incidence (multi-configuration). In that way, all lenses of a lens system can be coated with the same coating design. The results for single wavelength (laser) applications as well as for broadband applications will be discussed. Furthermore, the application of these coatings in several lens designs will be demonstrated. For this, transmissions are calculated in an improved optical lens design program (Winlens). The transmission performance of complex lens systems is listed surface by surface and is graphically displayed for the optical axis and for all chief rays and therefore for all main angles of incidence. Experience about these new coating designs combined with new features in an optical design software provides new aspects about 're-design to cost' for the lens designer.

Holographic-based scanning systems have been used for years in the high resolution prepress markets where monochromatic lasers are generally utilized. However, until recently, due to the dispersive properties of holographic optical elements (HOEs), along with the high cost associated with recording ''master'' HOEs, holographic scanners have not been able to penetrate major scanning markets such as the laser printer and digital copier markets, low to mid-range imagesetter markets, and the non-contact inspection scanner market. Each of these markets has developed cost effective laser diode based solutions using conventional scanning approaches such as polygon/f-theta lens combinations. In order to penetrate these markets, holographic-based systems must exhibit low cost and immunity to wavelength shifts associated with laser diodes. This paper describes recent developments in the design of holographic scanners in which multiple HOEs, each possessing optical power, are used in conjunction with one curved mirror to passively correct focal plane position errors and spot size changes caused by the wavelength instability of laser diodes. This paper also describes recent advancements in low cost production of high quality HOEs and curved mirrors. Together these developments allow holographic scanners to be economically competitive alternatives to conventional devices in every segment of the laser scanning industry.

The use of holographic optical elements (HOEs) in conjunction with LCDs to make high performance economical autostereoscopic displays is a new and promising development, The very first demonstrators showed that the technique can be used to produce very good quality 3D and 2D images, Our current work is directed at improving performance and exploring other opportunities opened up by the basic concept, These include improved optical design of the HOE and, possibility of using LEDs as light sources and that of using the HOE to generate 3D an at the same time provide colour separation to allow the display of full colour images on a monochrome LCD without the use of conventional colour filters. In addition the use of this technology to display two or more images on the LCD such that two viewers will each see different images on the one display.
