Abnormal dispersion is found in a large number of optical liquids. These liquids are quite useful in the design of apochromatic lens systems because they are inexpensive and are readily available compared to the expensive abnormal dispersion glasses and crystals more commonly used. Further, there is no practical upper limit on the size of a liquid optical element. However, because the use of these materials as optical elements is quite new, the long term stability of their optical properties after exposure to various environmental conditions must be determined. In this paper, we report on a series of tests performed to determine the optical stability of several abnormal dispersion liquids. The liquids were subjected to: (1) high intensity ultraviolet radiation, (2) high temperatures, and (3) long term exposure to air. Measurements of both optical transmission and refractive index were performed before and after each exposure. The tests were performed on four abnormal dispersion liquids that have been found to be quite useful in the design of apochromatic lenses. The results indicate that long term exposure to either intense ultraviolet radiation or air, produced only negligible changes in the index of refraction. Changes in optical transmission were observed, but they were largely confined to the ultraviolet spectral region. Prolonged exposure to temperatures of 60 degree(s)C did not produce any measurable change in the optical properties. The measurements were performed at the Vavilov State optical Institute, St. Petersburg, Russia, in collaboration with Lockheed Palo Alto Research Laboratory, Palo Alto, California.

Diffractive optical elements have been proposed for many applications. One of the principal limitations of these lenses is abundant chromatic aberration that prohibits broadband use without design compensation. I am working on a novel configuration that exploits this typically unwanted effect to provide information into a third dimension of current 2D IR detection systems, meanwhile gaining additional information about the target. Possible parameters of interest are the target's direction and velocity vectors relative to the detector and its spectral signature, which will aid in target identification. This paper will focus on the design, fabrication techniques, and characterization of the DOE for this system.

This presentation highlights the results of a recently completed study that examines the Texas-Mexico multimodal transport system already in place, current plans for improvements or expansion, and opportunities and constraints faced by each transport mode - motor carriage, rail, maritime, and air. Particular emphasis is given to findings regarding transportation developments in Mexico. The study concludes that in Mexico, all modes are working at establishing new services and strategic alliances, intermodal arrangements are on the rise, and private-sector participation in infrastructure improvements is growing daily at Mexican seaports and airports as well as within that nation's highway and rail systems. This presentation looks at developments that concern privatization, deregulation, infrastructure improvements, financing arrangements, and new services in Mexico.

Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) has designed and prototyped high-frame rate intensified/shuttered Charge-Coupled-Device (CCD) cameras capable of operating at Kilohertz frame rates (non-interfaced mode) with optical shutters capable of acquiring nanosecond-to- microsecond exposures each frame. These cameras utilize an Interline Transfer CCD, Loral Fairchild CCD-222 with 244 (vertical) X 380 (horizontal) pixels operated at pixel rates approaching 100 Mhz. Initial prototype designs demonstrated single-port serial readout rates exceeding 2.97 Kilohertz with greater than 5 lp/mm spatial resolution at shutter speeds as short as 5 ns. Readout was achieved by using a truncated format of 128 X 128 pixels by partial masking of the CCD and then subclocking the array at approximately 65 Mhz pixel rate. Shuttering was accomplished with a proximity focused microchannel plate (MCP) image intensifier (MCPII) that incorporated a high strip current MCP (28 uA/***) and a LANL design modification for high-speed stripline gating geometry to provide both fast shuttering and high repetition rate capabilities. Later camera designs use a close-packed quadrupole head geometry fabricated using an array of four separate CCDs (pseudo 4-port device). This design provides four video outputs with optional parallel or time-phased sequential readout modes. Parallel readout exploits the full potential of both the CCD and MCPII with reduced performance whereas sequential readout permits 4X slower operation with improved performance by multiplexing, but requires individual shuttering of each CCD. The quad head format was designed with flexibility for coupling to various image intensifier configurations, including individual intensifiers for each CCD imager, a single intensifier with fiber optic or lens/prism coupled fanout of the input image to be shared by the four CCD imagers or a large diameter phosphor screen of a gateable framing type intensifier for time sequential relaying of a complete

Using the concept of matrix theory for lens design, a triplet lens can be replaced by a singlet lens which has an equivalent system matrix without changing its optical performance. Then, using third order Siedel's first aberration coefficient of the singlet lens is equal to zero, and the focal length and the physical length of the triplet lens are kept constant as constraints, an algebraic technique for optimizing a triplet lens is derived. Results show that this new optimizing technique is more effective than other conventional techniques for optimizing a triplet lens in the case of plane waves.

An all acousto-optic infrared scene projector (IRSP) has been developed for use in evaluating thermal-imaging guidance systems at the Kinetic Kill Vehicle Hardware-in-the-Loop Simulator (KHILS) facility located at Elgin AFB, Florida. The IRSP is a laser source based projector incorporating Scophony illumination and scanning methods to produce 96 X 96 pixel multi-wavelength images at very high frame rates (400 Hz). The IRSP is composed of five functionally similar optical trains, four of which are fed with a different `color' infrared laser. The separate scenes from each optical train are then combined and projected simultaneously into the imaging guidance system.
