There are many advanced local and global optimisation techniques, such as Gradient, Simplex, Flip-flop, Needle, Genetic and Simulated Annealing, which have been successfully applied to optical thin-film design. However, all these optimisation techniques either require a selection of a reasonable starting design, which is a big obstacle to an inexperienced designer, or they have some kind of inbuilt random feature, which may gives rise to different answers each time. To find the true global optimised solution for a thin film design problem, we need to solve an array of interlinked multi-dimensional simultaneous equations. Until recently, for more than just a few layers, this has been a very difficult task, requiring the use of a supercomputer and highly skilled programming. By using orthogonal Latin Square theory and an experimental design methodology in search space reduction process, a Windows based program has been written that can operate on even a 20 MHz. 386 computer. It can find the global optimum design for up to 23 layers using as many dispersive and lossy materials as one wishes, within a period of hours. Additionally this methodology (called DGL-Optimisation) allows the use of multiple target spectra with such as both s & p polarisation, for reflection and transmission simultaneously.

An inhomogeneous refractive index layer that follows a specific quintic (fifth-order polynominal) profile that smoothly matches the two-media interface is known to drastically reduce the nominal Fresnel reflection at this interface. There is no short wavelength cutoff for a quintic (or quintic-like) layer, as the reflectance continues to decrease with decreasing wavelength. Thus the quintic matching layer is a semi-infinite band antireflection coating. Furthermore, at the long wavelength end of the spectra the reflectance never rises above that of the Fresnel reflection at the bare interface, a feature not shared by multilayers optimized over specific bandwidths. A scaling relationship that relates the long wave cutoff to the total optical thickness of the quintic layer needed for a given reflectance level and for a given difference in media refractive index is derived. For example, a quintic layer whose optical thickness is two waves or four halfwaves (at the longest wavelength of the band) will reflect at least four orders of magnitude less than the reflectance of the bare interface for all lower wavelengths. This paper also compares a quintic layer which is inhomogeneous to a needle-optimized multilayer design.

The use of holographic optical elements (HOEs) in conjunction with LCDs to make high performance economical autostereoscopic displays is a new and promising development, The very first demonstrators showed that the technique can be used to produce very good quality 3D and 2D images, Our current work is directed at improving performance and exploring other opportunities opened up by the basic concept, These include improved optical design of the HOE and, possibility of using LEDs as light sources and that of using the HOE to generate 3D an at the same time provide colour separation to allow the display of full colour images on a monochrome LCD without the use of conventional colour filters. In addition the use of this technology to display two or more images on the LCD such that two viewers will each see different images on the one display.

A comparative study of different ion and plasma assisted physical vapor deposition processes at low temperature is reported. To work out a clear comparison of the different processes, the object of the study are single layers of different metal oxides like Ta2O5, TiO2, SiO2 and mixed oxides like H4 (Merck) deposited on glass and silicon substrates. Three different types of ion- (or plasma-respectively) sources are used: the cold cathode ion source from Denton (CC 104), the end hall ion source Mark II from CSC and the advanced plasma source from Leybold. Each of these processes is run under conditions concerning process parameters like bias, ion current, ion energy, beam characteristics and gas flow, which were understood to be optimized also to maintain long-term stability as realistic production conditions. The resulting metal oxide single layers are characterized by their optical properties, dispersion curves for NW and vIS as well as absorption and scatter at discrete wavelengths. Also discussed are mechanical properties like hardness and adherence. A test method is presented which clearly shows the superior behavior of the IAD coatings.

With the continuing development of Laser-Display-Technology, a new possibility for the production high level image projection is forwarded and with it the beginning of a new era in television: Tv picture formats previously thought impossible, the sharpness, color intensity and unsurpassed resolution of which make the dream of home cinema a reality. The key to this experience is visible laser light in red, green and blue, projected on a screen with the aid of horizontal and vertical deflection units.(1) In this paper, a primarily horizontal deflection system in the form of a rotating polygonal scanner is described. The design of this scanner assembly combines a double spherical air bearing with an integrated polygonal mirror for deflection and a high torque inside drive for quickly reaching high rotation. The Fraunhofer institute of Applied Optics and Precision engineering (IOF Jena) develops, from conception to assembled prototype, new self-acting precision bearing systems. This new scanner solution developed out ofIOF's previous developments resulting in the first ever sealed, minimal-maintenance, self-acting bearing.

Cut-off filters reject all the radiation below and transmit all that above a certain wavelength and vice versa. In this paper, we will study the design and fabrication of a short wave pass or a long wave pass dichroic mirrors for color separation and recombination from the R.G.B color beam source. In the laser display system, color separation and recombination is very important. We designed the coating layers so that the best performance may be obtained from a 45 degree incident s-polarized light. The following fabrication specification is satisfied in our color separation/recombination of the Kr-Ar laser source. The first dichroic mirror for the blue color separation, maximized on reflectance and transmittance as R>99% in the blue regions (400 similar to 490nm) and T>90% in the green and red region (510 similar to 700nm). The second dichroic mirror for the color recombination maximized the reflectance and transmittance as R>99% in the range of 510 similar to 700nm and T>90% in the blue color region. In the third dichroic mirror for which it used the color separation and recombination of the green and red simultaneously, maximized the reflectance and transmittance as R>99% in the green region (510 similar to 560nm) and T>90% in the red region. These fabricated mirrors were applied in our laser display projection system. We obtained an excellent result.

This paper describes a detailed design analysis that has been performed in order to identify the optimum design parameter regions for 0.18 mu m NMOSFET devices for low power applications. The objective of the analysis was to obtain the highest possible drive current while satisfying a target off-state leakage criterion and a short-channel constraint for a supply voltage of 0.9v. In the analysis, a set of basic structural and doping profile parameters was utilized in light of the anticipated future trends for this technology generation. In order to control adverse short-channel characteristics for these very short L-eff devices and achieve the largest possible drive current, channel profile engineering was required. Two different channel engineering options, a boron halo implant and a boron anti-punchthrough (APT) implant were investigated. The peak doping (dose) and peak depth (energy) of these implants were varied in order to analyze the effects on device performance. For each selected halo or APT dose and energy, the saturation drain current, I-Dsat, and the change in threshold voltage, Delta v-T, due to drain-induced-barrier-lowering (DIBL) were monitored. A design matrix was generated for devices at each of a number of different shallow S/D junction depths, showing both the I-Dsat and Delta v-T (DIBL) values plotted against the halo or APT implant dose and energy. These design matrices provide an understanding of the acceptable regions of device operation for different profile conditions. Finally, a comparison of the use of a halo implant versus an APT implant is discussed for this low-power technology.

current spectrometers are unsuitable for measuring transmission of large thick electro-optical windows because the optical path through the instrument is changed by the optic. Customization of a standard FTIR spectrometer capable of making normal and non-normal incidence angle transmission and reflection measurements is presented which addresses this and other problems associated with high precision spectroradiometry. Emphasis is on design features to ensure ordinate accuracy of these measurements. These techniques can replace witness sample testing commonly made in the industry.

developments in laser digitizing technology now make it possible to capture very accurate 3D images of the surface of the human body in less than 20 seconds. Applications for the images range from animation of movie characters to the design and visualization of clothing and individual equipment (CIE). In this paper we focus on modeling the user/equipment interface. Defining the relative geometry between user and equipment provides a better understanding of equipment performance, and can make the design cycle more efficient. Computer-aided fit testing (CAFT) is the application of graphical and statistical techniques to visualize and quantify the human/equipment interface in virtual space. In short, CAFT looks to measure the relative geometry between a user and his or her equipment. The design cycle changes with the introducing CAFT;now some evaluation may be done in the CAD environment prior to prototyping. CAFT may be applied in two general ways: 1) to aid in the creation of new equipment designs and 2) to evaluate current designs for compliance to performance specifications. We demonstrate the application of CAFT with two examples. First, we show how a prototype helmet may be evaluated for fit, and second we demonstrate how CAFT may be used to measure body armor coverage.
