Wearable systems, such as watch/wristband systems must deal with power consumption and power line interference problems without compromising the form factor of the device and the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). In this study, we present a preliminary design of a wrist-worn device that simultaneously detects ECG and cardiac pulse. Unlike the systems currently available in the market, the cardiac pulse is measured by detecting the magnetic disturbance caused by the blood flow in a localized magnetic field, eliminating the need to use optical sensors, which demand higher currents. The device’s circuitry was implemented using surface mount technology (SMT) on a 43.5 x 32.5 mm 4-layer PCB. With these dimensions, the contribution of electromagnetic interferences was lower than 42.5 μv when the device was used in an office setting. The main current consumption was lower than 500 μA, and the SNR was higher than 68 dB for the ECG and higher than 55 dB for the pulse signal, enabling a clear identification of the different waves of the detected signals. The aim is to simplify the signal processing algorithms in such a way that several features of the detected signals can be easily identified using fewer hardware resources. © 2024, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Free Space optical (FSO) communication is a wireless method that sends data via air using light. This paper describes the integration of a FSO communication system that is powered by solar energy. The transmitter and reception ends of the experimental setup are composed of an Arduino Uno board, a laser, and a solar panel, respectively. The goal of this study is to demonstrate the viability and efficiency of an FSO communication system that uses a laser and a solar panel. In the proposed FSO communication system, the microcontroller modulates and demodulates the data transmitted over the light beam and manages the laser and solar panel. Using an Arduino and a solar panel simplifies the system's design, lowers costs, and consumes less energy. According to test results, the system can reliably transmit data up to a distance of 10 meters with low bit error rates (BER). The proposed system is an attractive alternative to current FSO communication methods, which can be costly and cumbersome due to their complexity. The results of the experiments show that the proposed system can achieve dependable communication over short to medium distances, offering a promising wireless communication option in situations where conventional communication technologies are not practical. This paper demonstrates the implementation of an FSO communication system using a laser and solar panel, as well as its viability, effectiveness, and some of the potential industries it might be utilized in, such as healthcare, transportation, and telecommunications. © 2023 IEEE.

In current era of green energy, technology is shifting toward usability of solar energy. Among the popularly used semiconductor materials in photovoltaic devices, perovskite material has been investigated on large scale due to its excellent optical performance. The photovoltaic performance (Pv) of perovskite-based solar cells (PSC) has demonstrated exceptional performance in solar cell. Hybrid perovskite material possess high carrier life time, absorption co-efficient and diffusion length. In addition, it has feasibility to tune bandgaps to absorb different wavelengths. However, lead present in hybrid perovskite compounds is hazardous for environment. Also presence of organic cation is the main cause of thermal instability in hybrid perovskite. This study primarily aims to explore all inorganic halide perovskites (IHP) in photovoltaic cell. Due to outstanding optical performance and thermal stability of IHP materials, interest of researchers is shifting toward this material. The proposed design uses a low-lead IHP CsPb0.625Zn0.375I2Br, in the active layer of PSC structure. The device structure has simulated using simulator SCAPS-1D to verify the impact of interface defect density (IDD) at TiO2/ CsPb0.625Zn0.375I2Br and CsPb0.625Zn0.375I2Br / Spiro-MeOTAD interface. The IDD is varied in 7 logarithmic steps (1012 cm-2 - 1018 cm-2). Obtained results indicate the degradation in photovoltaic performance with increase in IDD. It has been noticed from the simulated results that power conversion efficiency (PCE) 22.96% to 16.58% with increase in IDD. The same impact is also observed on short circuit current density (JSC), open circuit voltage (vOC) and fill factor (FF), it decreases from 35.03 mA/cm2 to 33.88 mA/cm2, 0.80 v to 0.61 v and 83.55 % to 79.92 % respectively. © 2023 IEEE.

The paper shows the possibility of using a resonant tunneling diode as an optical sensor with a frequency output signal. The resonant tunneling diode was created on the basis of a quantum two-barrier heterostructure, which characterizes the existence of a negative differential resistance in the diode and its microwave properties in the entire radio frequency range. The diode acts both as a primary optical power sensor and as a microwave self-oscillator with an external oscillating LC system, where L and C are the equivalent inductance and equivalent capacitance of the oscillatory system. This greatly simplifies the design of the optical sensor. Using the principle of conversion 'optical signal - frequency' can significantly improve the metrological performance of the device. A study of the characteristics of an optical sensor based on its equivalent circuit, which takes into account its inductive and capacitive properties, has been carried out. The current-voltage characteristic has a descending section, causes the appearance of a negative differential resistance, which compensates for energy losses in the oscillatory system of the sensor's self-oscillator. The mathematical model of the sensor is based on the Kirchhoff equations describing the behavior of its equivalent circuit. Analytical dependences of the change in sensor parameters on the effect of optical power on it, as well as the transformation and sensitivity functions, are obtained. It is shown that the main contribution to changes in the conversion functions and sensitivity of the sensor is made by the change in the negative differential resistance under the influence of optical power. This results in a shift in the instrument's output frequency. The sensitivity of the sensor varied from 4.710optical {Hz}{mW} to 7.410optical{Hz}{mW} in the optical power change range from 1 mW to 10 mW. © 2022 IEEE.

In this study, a circuit structure of ring current controlled oscillator (ICO) is proposed. Through the cooperation of counter, bootstrap switch with special timing control and special ICO circuit module, the output frequency accuracy in traditional ring OSC is avoided from being affected by voltage range limitation and comparator delay, the temperature and voltage characteristics of output clock are improved, and the output clock with higher accuracy is obtained under low voltage and low power consumption. The test chip is manufactured by 0.18 µm CMOS process. The power supply voltage is 0.77 v, and its output frequency is 1.32 MHz. The deviation of the output clock with the power supply voltage is within ±1%, the deviation with the temperature is within ±2.5%, and the power consumption is 382 nW. © 2022 SPIE.

Integrating active distributed feedback reflector monolithically to replace HR coating may help reduce the cost of chip fabrication. We present the design and fabrication of a SOA integrated electro-absorption DFB laser based on identical epitaxial layer with HR coating replaced by ADR. The optimized laser structure has a 100-μm ADR, a 160-μm DFB, a 100-μm EAM and a 250-μm SOA. The fabricated device has a threshold current around 40 mA with good single mode stability. With injection current from 40 mA to 100 mA in DFB region, the SMSR is all over 50 dB. The extinction ratio is over -20 dB at the maximum EA bias voltage of 4v. The 10Gb/s eye diagrams for BTB configuration achieve a dynamic extinction over 10 dB and SNR over 7 dB. © 2022 SPIE.

In the large-aperture lens manufacturing, not only high surface quality but also high productivity is required. From this perspective, Reaction-Induced-Slurry-Assisted grinding (RISA grinding), in which cerium oxide slurry is supplied instead of using general grinding fluid, has been developed to achieve high surface quality at high removal rate. However, the surface profile error becomes large due to chemical removal effect of the cerium oxide slurry. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to experimentally investigate the influence of the chemical removal effect on the surface profile error using AE signals and servo current signals in RISA grinding. First, relation between dwell time and removal depth is analyzed by conducting a basic grinding test without the workpiece rotation. The result shows that the actual removal depth increases with increase of dwell time despite applying the constant depth of cut. Then, zero-cut RISA grinding test is conducted. It is found that the removal process proceeds even though zero-cut grinding, and its removal rate varies according to the wheel feed rate. Furthermore, the amount of cerium oxide abrasives adhered to the grinding wheel can be estimated from the AE signals and servo current signals. © 2024 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.v.

An ultrashort throw lens with a catadioptric relay (USTCR) for curved screens has a half-field angle greater than 110 degrees. The angle of the principal ray incident on the aspherical mirror increases according to the height of the ray emitted from the object surface. A larger field angle leads to larger sag amount. Thus, the degree of difficulty in precision machining increases. In this study, we examined how the tangent of the concave mirror surface can be reduced such that it can be manufactured while maintaining the half-field angle and its optical performance. It was found that the interval between imaging points reaching the screen can be made constant by suppressing the change in the principal ray incident on the concave mirror by +1- 1 degrees or less, particularly in the area of a half-field angle of 90 degrees or more, and making the change in the tangent of the concave mirror surface constant. As an index of distortion, we show that the perimeter ratio (Pr) of the frame length, which was equally divided by 5 x5 in the screen, improved from 0.26 to 0.73. As one possible application, a projection system that can be realized with only 8 projectors is proposed, as opposed to conventional systems consisting of approximately 20 projectors in omni-directional projection systems.

engineering design tools are evolving, where AI can enhance speed and quality. Which of the current and future developments will change the teaching of engineering design? Text-to-image tools appear to be a precursor to text-to-design tools which will offer sensible-looking outputs in areas where many design precedents enable interpolation. However, where novelty is the goal, especially in new design spaces, human understanding of multivariate decisions, including where empathy for welfare and delight are considerations, is hard to express as merit functions for machines to learn. AI is already improving productivity in collating information relevant to discovering and defining performance requirements, and information on design precedents and available supplies. It can also improve the validity of simulation during the creation and refinement of design solutions and automate the application of engineering drawing language to a final design specification. We suggest engineering students' future selves will value their, i) learning to use human interaction to characterise performance requirements, ii) gaining knowledge as to how (well) and why existing engineering designs work, iii) practicing sketching as a means to visually communicate design ideas, iv) using CAD to experiment with state of the art modelling and simulation functionality while creating their own system designs, v) developing proficiency in engineering drawing language, and, vi) learning to make, break and tinker in workshops and to explore the potential & limitations of production. CHIME, the Copernicus Hyperspectral Imaging Mission for the Environment, is one of six new missions that the EU and ESA are developing to expand the current suite of Copernicus Sentinels. The CHIME mission will provide systematic hyperspectral images to map changes in land cover and help sustainable agricultural practices. The contract for the development of two CHIME Satellites has been awarded in November 2020 to Thales Alenia Space France as Industrial Prime together with OHB Germany as Instrument Prime responsible for the novel Hyperspectral Imager (HSI). Compared to the two hyperspectral precursor missions, EnMAP (DLR) and PRISMA (ASI), CHIME will provide an enhancement allowing continuous and fully operational hyperspectral mapping of the Earth's surface. The Hyperspectral Imager (HSI) on both satellites is a high-performance pushbroom imaging spectrometer type of instrument. Each instrument records ~130km of swath at 30m x 30m ground sampling. The spectral sampling interval is 10nm, covering a continuous spectral range from 400 nm to 2500 nm. A high performance Three Mirror Anastigmat (TMA) type telescope with wide-band coated optics collects the light reflected from ground and images it to three highly linear radiometric responsive and almost distortion-free spectrometers attaining very good spectral stability. All optical units are mounted to a torus-like carbon fiber (CFRP) optical bench structure providing the necessary line of sight stability. The electro-optical back end is based on passively cooled Teledyne CHROMA-D digital readout detectors creating robust margin in the predicted Signal-to-Noise performance. In flight, the HSI can be calibrated via on-board devices and using reference targets outside the spacecraft. We present the design of the instrument payload at the stage of the Preliminary design Review (PDR) mid 2022.
