This paper describes a novel transimpedance ampli-fier design for 1 Gbps, 4-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) scheme, and plastic optical fiber (POF) communications. The proposed transimpedance amplifier (TIA) takes in the current from a large photodetector with a 30 pF parasitic capacitance. The circuit exploits a flipped voltage follower (FvF) and global current feedback to operate up to 300 MHz with ultra-low static power. The TIA consumes only 80 µW static power under a 1 v supply voltage. The design is validated with simulations using a commercial 40 nm process technology.

Full-field optical measurements like Digital Image Correlation or the Grid Method have brought a paradigm shift in the experimental mechanics community. While inverse identification techniques like Finite Element Model Updating (FEMU) or the virtual Fields Method (vFM) have been the object of significant developments, current test methods, inherited from the age of strain gauges or LvDTs, are not generally well adapted to the rich information provided by these new measurement tools. This paper provides a short review of the research dealing with the design and optimization of heterogeneous mechanical tests for identification of material parameters from full-field measurements. © Society for Experimental Mechanics, Inc. 2020.

The "New Fiber Optic Network for Campos Basin" Project is a strategic initiative aimed at renewing the Campos Basin mature offshore assets' communication infrastructure. The project began as a business case proposition in 2020 and initiated the construction in 2024. It involves laying 500km fiber optic cables connecting two onshore stations, in Rio de Janeiro and Espírito Santo States to 12 stationary production units at depths of up to 1,800m, providing 100 Gbps links. The paper will describe all the steps in the project approval and deployment phases, including a technical description of the solutions selected for implementation, the risks associated with such choices, and how they are being mitigated. The first illumination is scheduled to take place in 2025, and as such the project is in an advanced completion stage, which shall provide valuable insights into the way in which the project is being implemented. The business case demonstrates the project strategic importance to assure investments returns by supporting the use of current and new technology on monitoring and controlling production and to assure operational safety from remote control rooms and real time integrated operation centers. The project is being executed through an engineering, procurement, construction, and installation (EPCI) contract, which is a comprehensive approach that covers the main aspects of the project from design to installation. During the initial phase, a thorough evaluation was conducted to determine the feasibility and value of investing in connectivity for mature field assets. This involved assessing the infrastructure ability to ensure actual increase of oil production. In the second phase, the project scope was detailed, designed, and the hiring strategy was defined. This phase took place in a post-pandemic booming market scenario and included not only the offshore installation of the optical fiber network but also necessary adjustments to the operating platforms and the de

The results of an experimental investigation of the electrical wind as a means of convective renewal of gas mixtures in the gas-discharge gaps in CO2-laser mixtures at superatmospheric (1-12 Atm) pressures are presented. It is established that for a fixed value of the current of a unipolar corona discharge, the speed of the electrical wind does not depend on the pressure, but is determined by the chemical composition of the working mixture. The maximum values of the electrical wind velocity were achieved in pure carbon dioxide and molecular nitrogen and their values are 3.2 and 2.9 mâ™s -1. In typical CO2:N2:He laser mixtures = 1:1:3 - 1:1:6 the values of the speed of the electrical wind are in the range from 2.5 to 1.5 mâ™s -1. It is reported about the design and generation characteristics of a small-sized sealed-off metal-ceramic CO2 laser of superatmospheric pressure with an electrical wind operating at pulse repetition frequencies up to 25 Hz. At an operating pressure of 12 atmospheres and the excitation zone of the volumetric pump discharge v =18â™0.8â™0.8 cm3 achieved the maximum radiation energy in a pulse of 0.8 J with a duration of up to 10 nanoseconds. © COPYRIGHT SPIE. Hybrid solar cells (HSCs) can be a new pathway for low-cost, flexible, and high efficiency solar cells. III-v nanowires (NWs) with sub-wavelength scale dimensions have shown excellent optical and electrical properties, and can be easily fabricated on thin substrates together with polymer materials. In order to obtain optimal design requirements for III-v NWs/PEDOT: PSS HSCs, optical simulations using finite-difference-time-domain (FDTD) method is performed. To enhance light absorption properties of NWs, the important geometrical parameter, namely the diameter (D) of the NWs is optimized. Further, to maximize short-circuit current density, polymer (PEDOT: PSS) coating thickness on the NWs is optimized. In comparison to NW/air system, optimized PEDOT: PSS-coated NWs have shown better intrinsic anti-reflection properties, broad absorption spectra, and enhanced optical generation rates. © The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd 2020.

World Space Observatory Ultraviolet (WSO-Uv) is a major Russian-led international collaboration to develop a large Space-borne 1.7 m Ritchey-Chrétien telescope and instrumentation to study the Universe in the ultraviolet wavelengths. The WSO-Uv WUvS spectrograph consists of three channels: two high resolution channels (R=50000) with spectral ranges of 115-176 nm and 174-310 nm, and a low resolution (R=1000) channel with a spectral range of 115-305 nm. Each of the three channels has an almost identical custom detector consisting of a CCD inside a vacuum Enclosure, and drive electronics with associated cables. The main challenges of the WUvS detectors are to achieve high quantum efficiency in the FUv-NUv range, to provide low readout noise (≤3 e- at 50 kHz) and low dark current (≤ 12 e-/pixel/hour), to operate with integral exposures of up to 10 hours, and to provide good photometric accuracy. Teledyne e2v has designed three variants of a custom CCD272-64 sensor with different Uv AR coatings, optimised for each WUvS channel. The custom vacuum Enclosure, also designed by Teledyne e2v, prevents contamination and maintains the CCD at the operating temperature of -100oC, while the temperature of the WUvS optical bench is +20oC. STFC RAL Space has developed the Camera Electronics Box (CEB) which houses the CCD drive electronics. Digital correlated double sampling technology provides extremely low readout noise and also enables flexibility to optimise readout noise against pixel frequency for a number of normal and binned pixel readout modes. This paper presents the general trade-offs of the WUvS detector design, methods for extending the service life of the CCD sensors working with low signals in a Space radiation environment, and a summary of the measured and calculated key parameters of the WUvS detectors. © 2021 ESA and CNES

We present an overview of the pros and cons of using GPUs in optical design software. While GPUs can run multiple calculations in parallel, that parallelization comes with a price. We will discuss the trade-offs that allow GPUs to run up to thousands of cores in parallel and how those trade-offs effect the use of GPUs in optical design software. In particular, we review the use of GPUs in several steps of design calculations, including ray-tracing and computationally expensive steps such as calculating Huygens integrals.

Most lens design problems involve the time-consuming task of finding a proper starting point, that is, a lens design that approximately fulfills the desired first-order specifications while decently correcting aberrations. In recent work, a fully-connected (FC) deep neural network was trained to learn this task by extrapolating from known lens design databases. Here, we introduce a new dynamic neural-network architecture for the starting point problem which is based on a recurrent neural network (RNN) architecture. As we show, the dynamic network can learn to infer good starting points on many lens design structures at once whereas the previous model was limited to a given sequence of glass elements and air gaps. We also show that a pretrained RNN model can generalize its knowledge over new lens design structures for which we have no reference lens design and obtain a significantly better optical performance than a RNN trained from scratch.
