The scientific detector systems for the ESO ELT first-light instruments, HARMONI, MICADO, and METIS, together will require 27 science detectors: seventeen 2.5 mu m cutoff H4RG-15 detectors, four 4K x 4K 231-84 CCDs, five 5.3 mu m cutoff H2RG detectors, and one 13.5 mu m cutoff GEOSNAP detector. This challenging program of scientific detector system development covers everything from designing and producing state-of-the-art detector control and readout electronics, to developing new detector characterization techniques in the lab, to performance modeling and final system verification. We report briefly on the current design of these detector systems and developments underway to meet the challenging scientific performance goals of the ELT instruments.

The development of laser technologies defined the novel quality demands to optical interference coatings. For many technological applications is very important to use lasers with equal distribution of laser intensity across the beam. Gradient mirrors is one of the most simple and convenient means to manage spatial distribution of laser radiation, and can be used in various lasers and laser devices. These mirrors are used as output coupler in the laser cavity to form radiation close to the Gaussian distribution which using radially varying thickness that have been proved the most practical. Multilayer dielectric mirrors with a smooth changing reflection are used in various types of laser resonators. However, in practice, not equal distributions take place especially for Q-switch lasers. It can be arise due to as mode structure of laser irradiation, as optical defects of rod. So, application of such mirrors, permit realize the selection of transverse modes in which the minimal losses possess the transverse mode with amplitude distribution close to distribution of mirror reflection. This paper presents the methodology of fabricating multilayer dielectric mirror with altering over surface parameters of reflectance.

The Support Structure for the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) Infrared Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) consists of 18 carbon-fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) struts, a CFRP ring and a metal interface frame. This ultra-stiff, lightweight structure suspends the five-ton IRIS Science Cryostat and Rotator below the Narrow Field Infrared Adaptive Optics System (NFIRAOS). Through comprehensive design and analysis driven by requirements for stiffness, optical alignment, adjustability, manufacturability, weight and space, much headway was made to bring this design to fruition. This work presents the current state of design, including material down-selection, adjuster design and strategies for fabrication, alignment and testing. It summarizes methodologies and simulation results examining stiffness, seismic and thermal loads and transmission of vibration between NFIRAOS and IRIS. A prototype strut is being developed and will undergo dynamic mechanical testing to characterize its performance.

A double-gate vacuum field emission transistor array (DG-vFETA) is presented in this paper, which design the gate structure to eliminates gate leakage current caused by particle beam. This is verified by the particle trajectory simulated by CST. The simulation results also indicate that the cut-off frequency of the device can be reached to 3.97 THz This DG-vFETA consists of 1000 emitters, which has a 24.3 dB power gain with an input signal at 10 v amplitude and 200 mA. This shows a potential application of DG-vFETA as an amplifier in THz regime.

The current trend for higher resolution and sensitivity for Astronomy and Earth Observation space missions is leading to larger entrance apertures for future optical payloads, often requiring challenging and ultra-stable optical performances driving the instrument design and implementation. The level of complexity for such large systems requires a multidisciplinary approach and technological developments in cross-sectorial areas such as optics, structures, pointing accuracy, control, mechanisms. We present here a range of ESA R&D developments related to future large ultra-stable optical instrument architectures, providing perspectives on the identification of enabling technologies in view of current and future optical missions as well as and a wayforward to maturity for implementation within potential future missions.

The analysis of the current state of scientific and technical developments in the field of seawater desalination and wastewater distillation, in particular, the designs of desalination plants using a steam compressor. A method for gas-dynamic calculation of a steam compressor has been developed. Based on this model, a one-dimensional computational model was created to search for the configuration of a steam compressor using the IOSO optimization program. A mathematical model has been created to obtain the values of the flow parameters at any point of the interscapular channel, as well as to obtain the pressure and efficiency characteristics. Calculations for the strength of the impeller of a steam compressor were made, and the natural frequency of the rotor oscillations was determined. Based on the analysis obtained, a new design solution was worked out and a full-scale experiment was carried out.

It was found that at room temperature the value of the photoinduced current of Schottky diodes based on heterostructures InP/GaInAs/Pd at a hydrogen concentration of 0.03% is reduced by two orders of magnitude compared to the value without hydrogen. The value of the photoinduced current depends on the thickness of the depleted region on the surface of the semiconductor. A small change in the charged layer of H+ can cause a significant change in the thickness of this region and as a result, a strong change in the photoinduced current. This effect on current is much stronger than the influence of hydrogen concentration or capacitance without optical activation. As a result, it becomes possible to create hydrogen and hydrogen-containing gas sensors with much better sensitivity at room temperature. The original design of a miniature H2 sensor including an IR LED, a Schottky diode with a Pd contact, a Peltier cooler and a thermosensor is demonstrated. © 2020 Trans Tech Publications Ltd, Switzerland.

We proposed a novel structure to perform photon recycling for a double-light-source illumination system pumped by a laser. In the design, two kinds of phosphor are located at the two focus of an elliptical reflective surface separately, after the phosphor on the first focus pumped by laser, the backward scattering light will refocus at the other phosphor layer at the second focus. The absorption spectrum of the second phosphor should fit that of the emission light by the first phosphor. When the emission spectrum covers red light, the whole system is a double-light-source module.

This study presents a new method for selecting a pair of optical glass and housing material to achromatize and athermalize a lens system, by use of the factor of determination for material selection. To effectively obtain an optimum combination for materials, we newly propose the sequential material selection method by introducing the factor of determination for material selection, which depends on the level of contribution to correct these aberrations and the availability to be used as a suitable material. Even though there are many cases for material combinations, we can sequentially identify the best pair of glass and housing materials by checking the factor of determination. Using this design approach, we efficiently obtain an achromatic and athermal system through an optimum combination of materials, over the specified ranges in temperature and waveband.
