One of the key factors to be looked at during design of an automated eye screening system is to find the optic disc and optic cup. Objective: In eye screening of diabetic patients, the feature such as hard exudates and cotton wool spots can be noticed which share similar properties with optic disc In certain diseases like glaucoma ophthalmologist look at the ratio of optic cup with optic disc to detect the presence or absence of glaucoma currently, the process is manual performed by ophthalmologist, which a time consuming and tedious job. This fact motivated to design a fully automated procedure to detect optic cup and optic disc. Method: In the current paper a multilevel active contour technique is used that generates the snake to detect boundaries of optic cup and optic disc using intensity of the border pixels which are tested using 3σ control limits. The algorithm works in two parts. In part-1, optic disc boundary is detected and in part-2, the optic cup is marked by concentrating inside the area marked as optic disc in part-1. Findings: This approach reduces processing area and hence improves computational time A local database to carry out this work was created by collecting images from Karnataka Institute of Diabetology, Bangalore The results obtained by the proposed procedure are encouraging and have yielded 100% results with the fundus images containing full optic disc Improvement: The method is fully automatic and no user intervention is required.

Nanotechnology is an extensive area of study and research having endless applications in the real world. This terminology was initially used by many researchers and includes study in several fields like physics, chemistry, biology, material science, engineering, and computer science. In recent year's nanotechnology has brought evolution in the current era of various applications. In this paper, we explore the developments and advancement due to nanotechnology which provides considerable opportunity for the development of smaller, faster, lighter, and reliable nanocomputers. This paper is concerned with the top-down approach and the bottom-up fabrication approaches used in the development of nanotechnology that directly affects the modern computer design and architecture. In this paper we have highlighted the role of nanotechnology in computers science and the current development, opportunities occurred in recent years. Here we also discuss the use of Nanotubes, Quantum dots in computers, in place of the silicon chips. The future perspectives of Nanotechnology and the risks associated with advanced nanotechnology are also discussed here. © 2018 IEEE.

The intensification of research at Tomsk State University of Control Systems and Radioelectronics (TUSUR) leads to the increase of publication activity of graduate students. However, numerous language and style problems in their research articles in English indicate the lack of academic writing literacy, which impedes the effective publication process. Up to date, there has been no specialized course for teaching English for Academic Purposes in TUSUR. The aim of this study is to analyze the current level of paper writing skills of TUSUR first-year graduate students and their motivation for studying EAP introduced into the curriculum according to the new educational standard. The authors conducted a questionnaire survey covering most common grammar, vocabulary, punctuation and genre mistakes from students' writings. The questionnaire analysis described in the paper outlines the extent of the problem and allows defining the range and profile of didactic units for an elective EAP course. We expect that the introduction of such course will lead to the increase of publication activity of young scientists. © 2019 IEEE.

Here, we introduce current design trends in modern machine building inductor installations on the example of inductor installations for heating before treatment. A particular focus is given to the numerical simulation, whose importance increases due to modern strict requirements for the technological process as well as computational power increase. Nowadays, numerical computations are required not only to calculate electromagnetic and thermal fields for separate devices but also to simulate the whole technology. New trends in computing developments allow using real-time computational model control by inverse solution (inductor parameters calculation according to the given temperature profile). © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Silicon solar cells based on p-type silicon wafers represent the overwhelming majority of photovoltaic products on the market today. In this work, several commonly used cell architectures are investigated to identify the loss mechanisms limiting device performance. These technologies include multicrystalline Al-BSF, monocrystalline Al-BSF, monocrystalline PERC, and bifacial monocrystalline PERC. Characterization methods including current voltage measurements, suns-v OC , photoluminescence imaging, and spatially resolved external quantum efficiency and reflectance measurements were used to probe the recombination, resistive and optical loss mechanisms for each technology. The optical and recombination properties are significantly impacted by the cell design and the most significant change was observed in the effective lifetime with the transition to PERC architectures. The relative variation of performance metrics across cell groups was also investigated, and an increase in the standard deviation for effective lifetimes amongst the PERC cell types was observed.

Significant developments have taken place over the past few years in the area of vehicular communication systems in the ITS environment. It is vital that, in these environments, security is considered in design and implementation since compromised vulnerabilities in one vehicle can be propagated to other vehicles, especially given that v2X communication is through an ad-hoc type network. Recently, many standardisation organisations have been working on creating international standards related to vehicular communication security and the so-called Internet of vehicles (Iov). This paper presents a discussion of current v2X communications cyber security issues and standardisation approaches being considered by standardisation bodies such as the ISO, the ITU, the IEEE, and the ETSI. © 2018 Institution of engineering and Technology. Luminous power improvement in InGaN v-Shaped Quantum Well LED using CSG on SiC Substrate

This paper presents the design and simulation of Silicon Carbide (SiC) based technology, Indium Gallium Nitride (InGaN) Multiple Quantum Well (MQW) Light-Emitting Diode (LED) with a Compositionally Step Graded (CSG) InGaN barrier and v-Shaped well in the active region. The simulations are obtained in Silvaco Computer Aided design simulator and parameters such as Internal Quantum Efficiency (IQE) with respect to input current, spontaneous emission in regard to wavelength and power versus current in the device are theoretically studied. The CSG InGaN barrier LED with v-shaped quantum well shows substantial growth in output power when compared to the CSG GaN barrier structure with conventional MQW. The high carrier confinement in the v-shape well causes, transportation/injection of hole and change in band bending due to polarization effect. Moreover, lattice-matched SiC substrate over GaN material increases the InGaN v-shaped MQW LEDs radiative recombination rate which in turn leads to high output power. The optical luminous power of 160mW and 82% of peak IQE, emitting wavelength at 460 nm and 200mA of injection current is obtained for the proposed LED. The enactment of the v shape MQW CSG-InGaN device technology is a good alternative choice for commercial and industrial lighting applications.

We present the results on growth, characterization and optical properties of quantum-cascade laser heterostructures grown by molecular-beam epitaxy. The double-phonon resonance design for forming of active region together with thick InP-based top cladding was used to increase the quantum-cascade laser performance. The results of electroluminescence studies of 4-cleaved samples are presented. The room temperature lasing at 8.0 um with threshold current density about 1.98 kA/cm2 was achieved. © 2018 Institute of Physics Publishing. All rights reserved.

Smartphones are increasingly utilising a dual-camera setup, introducing the possible use of one or more specialised camera modules. The current work presents a smartphone camera designed for portraiture. In portraiture, it is desirable to have a natural Bokeh effect, resulting from shallow depth of field (DoF). Because DoF is inversely related to the square of diameter, the proposed lens has a large entrance pupil diameter and low F-number. To fit such a camera within typical smartphone housing, the design is doubly folded, resulting in a compact z-profile (phone thickness) of less than 5 mm, with a total ray path of 13 mm. Due to physical limitations, the field-of-view (Fov) is reduced;this is acceptable, considering the specialised application of the camera and attractively large entrance pupil diameter. With a focal length of 7.6 mm, the system is retrofocus, but could be considered telephoto in terms of its z-height, when compared to typical smartphone lenses. This proof-of-concept design is demonstrated here using glasses. Axial colour is controlled using two doublets. For compactness, the aperture stop is positioned between the first doublet and first fold mirror, also allowing balancing of lateral colour and distortion. For very compact applications, a fixed-focus version of this system was designed. However, considering the large focal length and diameter, the hyperfocal distance is unattractively large;hence, a slightly longer refocussing system was also designed. Refocus is achieved by moving the the second doublet, the power of which must be increased relative to the fixed-focus design-the power increase disturbs the aberration balance about the stop, and hence lateral colour and distortion increase slightly. Distortion remains below 5% and lateral colour should be possible to correct digitally.

The most widely used objectives for the space optics are mirror and catadioptric systems. We have considered several scheme types including the three-mirror schemes both of the Korsch-type and the systems without an intermediate image and compare them from the point of view of packaging conditions, image quality and achievable characteristics. The two-mirror systems with lens correctors are also analyzed. The optical layout and parameters of several variants are presented and the image quality is shown.
