We present a summary of the cryogenic detector preamplifier development programme under way at the ANU. Cryogenic preamplifiers have been demonstrated for both near-infrared detectors (Teledyne H1RG and Leonardo SAPHIRA eAPD as part of development for the GMTIFS instrument) and optical CCDs (e2v CCD231-84 for use with the AAT/veloce spectrograph). This approach to detector signal conditioning allows low-noise instrument amplifiers to be placed very close to an infra-red detector or optical CCD, isolating the readout path from external interference noise sources. Laboratory results demonstrate effective isolation of the readout path from external interference noise sources. Recent progress has focussed on the first on-sky deployment of four cryogenic preamp channels for the veloce Rosso precision radial velocity spectrograph. We also outline future evolution of the current design, allowing higher speeds and further enhanced performance for the demanding applications required for the on instrument wavefront sensor on the Giant Magellan Integral Field Spectrograph (GMTIFS).

The last decade is the time of a very dynamic development of lighting technology. This development covers many areas that complement each other. The development of light sources, luminaires, measurement techniques and design methods make it necessary to develop new, effective tools to support the design and analysis of lighting equipment. In lighting technology, the most common analysis is made of such parameters as the illuminance, luminance distribution and discomfort glare, inseparable from the specificity of modern light sources. A characteristic feature of almost all of them is high luminance, on the level of 107- 108cd/m2. High luminance facilitates the design of very precise optical systems, but also it is strongly associated with the possibility of discomfort associated with glare. current methods of glare analysis in simulation software are related to conversion to the average luminance value of the luminaire, saved as simplified light parameters in electronic files (IES, LDT or similar). currently the calculations take place as a result of calculation ratio the value of luminous intensity in a given direction and the surface area of the dimension of the luminaires in the same direction. This can lead to a significant understatement of the luminance of the luminaire in any situation where luminous intensity comes from the heterogeneous luminance distribution on the surface of the luminaire. This situation most often occurs in luminaires with high-luminance light sources with a reflector system and in the case of multi-source luminaires with lenses - eg multi-LED luminaires. The paper presents advanced methods of luminance modelling of light sources developed as a result of digital measurements of luminance distributions. A comparative analysis of the accuracy of the simulation calculations of the analytical lighting fixture model will be presented. The results will be compared to the classic ray tracing methods used in currently used models. © 2018 IEEE.

This research aims to characterize the bead geometry, metallurgical aspects of the optimized maraging steel (250 grade) weld track processed by autogenous gas tungsten arc welding technique. design of experiments was used to determine the weld track possessing optimal bead geometry. Welding speed and current were the parameters considered for optimization. Depth of penetration and bead width were the adjudicating parameters for optimality. Taguchi analysis showed that welding current is directly proportional to depth and width whereas weld speed was indirectly proportional. Statistical analysis indicated that welding speed has affected the depth of penetration and different current levels have affected the width of the weld bead linearly. optical microscopy and SEM/EDAX analysis were done to investigate the post weld microstructural changes. X-Ray Diffraction were done to understand the phase formations. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Here we study photovoltaic properties of GaInPNAs based quantum well and superlattice solar cells, that are either strain-balanced or lattice matched to silicon and evaluate their potential towards the development of high-efficiency tandem operating in conjunction with a silicon bottom cell. Quaternary dilute nitride compound semiconductors like GaAsyP1-x-yNx and Ga1-zInzP1-xNx are lattice matched with silicon at y=4.7*x-0. 1, z=2.2*x-0.044 and have direct bandgap (with N>0.6%);thus, allowing monolithic integration of III-v optoelectronics with silicon technology and III-v/Si tandem solar cells. Applying eight band k.p strained Hamiltonian, for both tensile and compressive strain, and Band Anti-crossing (BAC) model to the conduction band, in order to account for small amounts of nitrogen impurities, the electronic band structure and dispersion relation of these alloys can be determined. With small amount of nitrogen (<5%), bandgaps of these alloys lattice matching with silicon fulfil the optimum bandgap (1.7-1.9) ev requirement for III-v/Si tandem solar cell. Confinement energies in quantum structures can be computed using the transfer matrix approach. optical absorption is evaluated by taking into account the inter band transitions in the quantum well and barrier region, including excitonic transitions, using the fermi golden rule for both TE and TM polarization of incident light. Using these properties, we can determine whether the possible integration of p-i-n MQWs (or SL) solar cell on silicon is favorable by evaluating the predicted quantum efficiency and photo-current. The designs for a tandem III-v-N/Si represent an opportunity for achieving practical efficiencies of more than 30% under AM 1.5G spectrum.

The interesting experiments for investigation of image formation in optical microscopes have been done by E. Abbe, A. Porter and L. Mandelshtam. These experiments have become the classical ones and they are widely used for explanation of Fourier optics. The principal disadvantage of them is difference in optical schemes for observation of object images and their spatial spectrums. The proposed optical setup makes possible demonstration of two stages of image formation - obtaining a spatial spectrum and composing a magnified object image - together in one plane. This setup contains two imaging channels separated by a beam splitter after a microscope objective. The first one forms a magnified object image, the second one - an image of a spatial spectrum. These images may be observed on a screen, via eyepieces or using image sensors. Any occluding of spectrum zones becomes visible and it leads to the corresponded changes in an object image. This optical setup would be useful for optical education and research.

The work associates with the catadioptric systems with two-component afocal achromatic compensator. The most catadioptric systems with afocal compensator have the power mirror part and the correctional lens part. The correctional lens part can be in parallel, in convergent beam or in both. One of the problems of such systems design is the thermal defocus by reason of the thermal aberration and the housing thermal expansion. We introduce the technique of thermal defocus compensation by choosing the optical material of the afocal compensator components. The components should be made from the optical materials with thermo-optical characteristics so after temperature changing the compensator should become non-afocal with the optical power enough to compensate the image plane thermal shift. Abbe numbers of the components should also have certain values for correction chromatic aberrations that reduces essentially the applicable optical materials quantity. The catalogues of the most vendors of optical materials in visible spectral range are studied for the purpose of finding the suitable couples for the technique. As a result, the advantages and possibilities of the plastic materials application in combination with optical glasses are shown. The examples of the optical design are given.

Now that LEDs have massively invaded the illumination market, a clear trend has emerged for more efficient and targeted lighting. The project described here is at the leading edge of the trend and aims at developing an evaluation board to test smart lighting applications. This is made possible thanks to a new liquid crystal light modulator recently developed for broadening LED light beams. The modulator is controlled by electrical signals and is characterized by a linear working zone. This feature allows the implementation of a closed loop control with a sensor feedback. This project shows that the use of computer vision is a promising opportunity for cheap closed loop control. The developed evaluation board integrates the liquid crystal modulator, a webcam, a LED light source and all the required electronics to implement a closed loop control with a computer vision algorithm.

The fluorescence of optical glasses is a property that needs to be taken into account in optical designs for life science applications. Many optical glasses from SCHOTT show a very low intrinsic or auto-fluorescence. The fluorescence depends mainly on the applied excitation wavelength and the optical glass type. The fluorescence of optical glasses is usually defined as the quotient of the integral of the emission spectrum with the integral of the emission spectrum of a reference glass. This definition does not give any information about the actual quantum efficiency of the fluorescence. In this presentation recent data on the integral fluorescence of SCHOTT optical glasses are presented. Additionally, first measurements of the quantum efficiency of SCHOTT optical glasses are presented and compared to the standard method.

In the process of reducing the production cost and satisfying the customer and to sustain in the current volatile market, the manufacturing companies are looking for alternate processes and methods of designing and manufacturing. The conventional CAD/CAM tools are developed to meet the general needs of the market, but not the rapid or specific requirements of the market or customer. Consequently, the companies are looking to customize or tailor the CAD/CAM tools to improve their effectiveness. For this reason, the scope of research in the field of customization of designing tools has improved rapidly in the recent time. This paper discusses an introductory approach for developing an knowledge based system for CAD modelling using customization process of an CAD/CAM tool. The intension behind the development of the system is to reduce the production time and cost. The effectiveness of the proposed system has been examined using an industrial case study. © 2017 Elsevier Ltd.
