Development of a ring cavity-based fibre optic sensor for MR-compatible medical sensing applications

Advances in robotic systems and rapid developments in minimally invasive surgery (MIS) have made their use possible in the operating room due to many distinct advantages offered by MIS over conventional surgical procedures. The constant increase of medical examinations, surgeries and surgical interventions using intraoperative guidance with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has promoted research on new sensors to be applied in this scenario. However, due to the challenging environment under MRI system limits the applicability of materials and traditional electronic sensors. optical fibres are small in size, chemically inert, immune to electromagnetic interference and offer the real-time in vivo multi-parameter measurement capability. Herein, we report a ring cavity-based fibre optic sensor design using MR-compatible polymer material. optical fibres were used to excite surface resonance modes (SRM) of the ring cavity-based sensor. The paper reports initial investigations on ring cavity based MR-compatible fibre optic sensor design. Computational simulations were carried out to study the effect of structural and material parameters on the sensor design. Ring cavity was developed using polymethyl methacrylate. Developed ring cavity will be used to develop the MR-compatible fibre optic sensor for medical applications.

Today, both CCD and CMOS sensors can be envisaged for nearly all visible sensors and instruments designed for space needs. Indeed, detectors built with both technologies allow excellent electro-optics (EO) performances to be reached, the selection of the most adequate device being driven by their functional and technological features and limits. The first part of the paper shortly recalls how far CMOS Image Sensors (CIS) EO performances have been improved these last years. The second part reviews the advantages of CMOS technology for space applications, illustrated by examples of CIS developments performed by EADS Astrium and Supaéro/CIMI for current and short term coming space programs. © COPYRIGHT SPIE. Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin is developing BESSY vSR, a novel upgrade of the BESSY II facility to provide highly flexible pulse lengths while maintaining the average flux and brilliance of BESSY II [1]. The project goal is to simultaneously circulate both "standard" (some 10 ps long) and "short" (ps and sub-ps long) pulses offering the BESSY user community picosecond dynamics and high-resolution experiments. The concept relies on the installation of high-voltage SRF cavities operating at the 3rd and 3.5th harmonics where the beating of the two frequencies provides RF buckets for long and short bunches. Since these cavities will operate in CW and with high beam current (300 mA), the cavity design represents a challenging goal when needing to avoid coupled bunch instabilities (CBI's). The installation of the vSR cryomodule must fit in one of the available 4-m long low beta straights. On this paper recent findings as well as project scope redefinitions are addressed together with the related technological and engineering techniques. The present SRF developments are shown, including the cavities, higher-order mode absorbers and the cryomodule cold-string design. © 2017 CC-BY-3.0 and by the respective authors

The increasing interest on space telescopes for scientific applications leads to implement the manufacturing technology of the most critical element, i.e. the primary mirror: being more suitable a large aperture, it must be lightweight and deployable. The presented topic was originally addressed to a spaceborne DIAL (Differential Absorption LIDAR) mission operating at 935.5 nm for the measurement of water vapour profile in atmosphere, whose results were presented at ICSO 2006 and 2008. Aim of this paper is to present the latest developments on the main issues related to the fabrication of a breadboard, covering two project critical areas identified during the preliminary studies: the design and performances of the long-stroke actuators used to implement the mirror active control and the mirror survivability to launch via Electrostatic Locking (EL) between mirror and backplane. The described work is developed under the ESA/ESTEC contract No. 22321/09/NL/RA. The lightweight mirror is structured as a central sector surrounded by petals, all of them actively controlled to reach the specified shape after initial deployment and then maintained within specs for the entire mission duration. The presented study concerns: a) testing the Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) backplane manufacturing and EL techniques, with production of suitable specimens;b) actuator design optimisation;c) design of the deployment mechanism including a high precision latch;d) the fabrication of thin mirrors mock-ups to validate the fabrication procedure for the large shells. The current activity aims to the construction of an optical breadboard capable of demonstrating the achievement of all these coupled critical aspects: optical quality of the thin shell mirror surface, actuators performances and back-plane - EL subsystem functionality. © Copyright SPIE.

This paper describes a high-resolution optical filter (HRF) suitable for narrow bandwidth filtering in LIDAR applications. The filter is composed of a broadband interference filter and a narrowband Fabry-Perot etalon based on the capacitance stabilised concept. The key requirements for the HRF were a bandwidth of less than 40 pm, a tuneable range of over 6 nm and a transmission greater than 50%. These requirements combined with the need for very high out-of-band rejection (greater than 50 dB in the range 300 nm to 1200 nm) drive the design of the filter towards a combination of high transmission broadband filter and high performance tuneable, narrowband filter. © COPYRIGHT SPIE. Using complexity management to address the product-production system has become a substantial competitive factor for manufacturing companies. As the industry is facing various challenges, which are structured in the so called complexity radar, scientific research has been intensified. This paper analyzes the current state and opportunities in the research area of product-production complexity by evaluating a total of 372 publications. The associated evaluation methodology was developed by using statistical methods to allocate publications to the complexity radar's objectives and effects. The identification of addressed areas as well as progress in complexity management research allows for a deduction of further research opportunities. Furthermore, interdependencies between currently pursued research areas are analyzed, targeting at the exploration of multi-objective research topics. The extensive literature review comprehensively reveals the current state of complexity management research as well as further research opportunities. (C) 2017 The Authors. Three mirror anastigmat (TMA) telescope designs [1] had been implemented in different projects ranging from the narrow Field-Of-view large instruments as Quickbird (2° FOv) [2] to smaller telescopes as JSS 12° FOv developed for RapidEye mission [3]. This telescope configuration had been also selected for the PROBA-v payload, the successor of vegetation, a multispectral imager flown on Spot-4 and subsequently on Spot-5 French satellites for Earth Observation and defence. PROBA-v, small PROBA-type satellite, will continue acquisition of vegetation data after the lifetime of Spot-5 expires in 2012. The PROBA-v TMA optical design achieves a 34° FOv across track and makes use of highly aspherical mirrors. Such a telescope had become feasible due to the recently developed Single Point Diamond Turning fabrication technology. The telescope mirrors and structure are fabricated in aluminium and form an athermal optical system. This paper presents the development of the compact wide FOv TMA, its implementation in PROBA-v multispectral imager and reviews optics fabrication technology that made this development possible. Furthermore, this TMA is being used in combination with a linear variable filter in a breadboard of a compact hyperspectral imager. Moreover, current technology allows miniaturization of TMA, so it is possible to use a TMA-based hyperspectral imager on a cubesat platform. © Copyright SPIE.

A Readout Integrated Circuit (ROIC) for GaN ultraviolet (Uv) focal plane array (FPA) working in "solar-blind" band is studied in this paper. It has a format of 320x256 and a pixel pitch of 30 mu m. This circuit can operate both in integrating-while-reading (IWR) and integrating-then-reading (ITR) mode with the frame rate higher than 100fps. It is common that trade-offs always exist between chip power consumption and performances in integrated circuits design. In order to get high injection efficiency with small area and low power, A novel low-power capacitive-feedback trans-impedance amplifier (CTIA) with snapshot mode is designed for the proposed circuit. The smallest operational current of CTIA is only 10nA for 5v power supply. The total power consumption of ROIC is reduced significantly to 45mW with the ultra-low-power pixel. By adopting the 0.35 mu m 2P4M mixed signal process, the high-performance CTIA architecture can make two gain selections which charge capacities are 3.4Me(-) and 0.16Me(-) per pixel with 2.5 v output range. According to the experimental results, this circuit works well under 5v power supply and achieves 8MHz pixel-data-transmission rate.

The task of this research project is to define the extent of applicability of such 3D self-manufacture approach to the production of optical fastenings. The resulting lack of equipment, to be used for demonstration of simple experiments, which would be both competitive in performance and cheap to produce, led to the decision to research opportunities for self-manufacturing.
