This p a p e r i n v e s t i g a t e s h o w r e n e w a b l e sources o f e n e r g y are p o r t r a y e d i n f i l m s i n g e n e r a l a n d science fiction films in particular focusing on the significance of including these technologies in films. This paper aims to identifying how informed the images of future cities in science fiction films by the current developments in renewable sources of energy and their integration within the city. It can be argued that science fiction films generally lack references to renewable sources of energy. This can be attributed to the perception of these images as a representation of a prosperous future society while, in many occasions, science fiction films depict future city as a dystopia. This paper examines this assumption by comparing the dystopic visions of future cities to the utopic vision in science fiction films through the implementation of renewable sources of energy within the depicted future city. The analysed films include but are not limited to: Metropolis (1927), Things to Come (1936), 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), Silent Running (1972), Soylent Green (1973), Blade Runner (1982), Nausica of the valley of the Wind (1984), Slow Burn (1986), The Fifth Element (1997), Armageddon (1998), The Day After Tomorrow (2004), The Perfect Sleep (2009) and Oblivion (2013). Photodetector Characterization Based on DSSC (Dye-Sensitized Solar Cell)

A photodetector performance as a light sensor based on the design and material of DSSC (Dye-Sensitized Solar Cell) has been characterized. Oxide Semiconductor nanoparticle of TiO2 and extracted natural dye are used to absorb and convert incident photon to electric energy using a sandwich structure of 1.5 x 1.5 cm2 active area. The sensor materials were used include TCO (Transparent Conductive Oxide) glass as substrate, electrolyte solution and carbon. Method of TiO2 deposition to the TCO glass substrate is spin coating and firing at 1,500 rpm and 450 °C, respectively. Natural dye was extracted from green algae by a different variation of solution concentration according to the ratio of mass and volume. The chlorophyll absorbance was investigated by spectrophotometer at a wavelength of 300-800 nm. SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) is used to observe TiO2-coated TCO glass morphology. Fabricated sensors are characterized according to the electrical parameters of voltage and current towards light illuminance from the light source. This natural dye-based optical photodetector performance has been analysed to obtain linearity, sensitivity, uncertainty error, and other electrical transient response characteristics. The result of extracted chlorophyte absorbance shows a wavelength peak at 580 to 680 nm with different intensity; it indicates the visible light absorbance spectra occurred. Sensor measurement using light illumination up to 30,000 lux produces the highest rated voltage of 626.4 mv and current 78,7 (µA) at the ratio of 6:5 (m:v) solution. This sensor has a voltage sensitivity of 1,0875 mv/10lux and the current sensitivity of 0.0024 µA/lux. The voltage and current uncertainty error are 0.36% and 0.481%, respectively.

In the context of formation flying projects, one of the major points is the required precision on the intersatellites distance and/or relative displacement. According to the mission, these needs are more or less restrictive, leading to the use of fine laser metrology. Thus, for the needs of PEGASE mission - a possible DARWIN in flight demonstration- SAGEIS-CSO has been asked by CNES to design a fine longitudinal sensor able to work at 120 K while performing displacement measurements at a working distance range of 25 to 250 m. Its required performances are a resolution and a precision of 25 nm. This activity succeeds to the MOUSE II system development, which has demonstrated the ability to obtain the required laser metrology using a frequency stabilised laser, a compact and totally passive Michelson type sensor head plus a detection unit for data processing. optical signals are routed using fibres, allowing the sensor head to be alone in a cryogenic environment. Now, the goal is to obtain a validated prototype at a MQ level by the end of 2007. For that, the laser source will be an update of the flight models made for IASI, using a more powerful DFB diode, pin-to-pin compatible with the previous design, and then giving minor changes. The current regulation was optimized in order not to degrade the narrow diode spectral width. The opto-thermo-mechanical design of the sensor head, in collaboration with AAS, is also under progress, and constitutes the major evolution of the MOUSE II. © COPYRIGHT SPIE. Driven by the composite applying industries, in particular automotive, wind energy or mechanical engineering, the demand on new fibre surface as well as interphase concepts for advanced material developments and customized fibre properties increase. Likewise, a better comprehension of sizings, and first and foremost the access to "sizing knowledge" is required. Effective surface treatment of reinforcement fibres is a key task in order to achieve improved composite properties. Thereby, fibre sizings are considered as powerful "tools" to tailor interphases in fibre reinforced composites, protect the filaments during the fibre drawing process and enable efficiently post-processing. However, fibre sizings, its anticipating independencies on the composite performance are still poorly understood, and thereby its potential seems to be still far from being exhausted. Fundamental studies of surfaces, new methods to quantify the interfaces as well as interphase properties are significant issues to push sizing development and initiate new interphase concepts. In this work, surface sensitive methods, single fibre and composite tests, and their expected outcome for the fibre development as well as interphase design were discussed. Furthermore, recent work on carbon nanotubes-enriched interphases is presented. © 2017 International Committee on Composite Materials. All rights reserved.

New generation of Compton sources are developing in different countries to take advantage of the photon energy amplification given by the Compton backscattering effect. In this framework the Eurogammas international collaboration is producing a very high brilliance gamma source for the Nuclear Physics pillar of the Extreme Light Infrastructure program (ELI-NP). At present there is a lot of effort in the mass production of all the components and in the developments and tests of the different high technology devices that will operate in the gamma beam source, like the optical recirculator and the high gradient - high average current warm C-band accelerating sections. The Oil and Gas industry has faced an unpredictable and fast transformation in the last years. At first, there were barrel prices over U$ 100 dollars, which motivated a huge worldwide investment that pushed operators and the supply chain to respond to unprecedented growth. Due to the downturn in the oil prices, the challenge has moved towards achieving project feasibility in a low Brent scenario. The Brazilian subsea oil and gas industry has struggled with this context. Initially, with the Pre-Salt discoveries in 2006 it was necessary to develop breakthrough technological solutions to face this new frontier and to build 10 ultra deep-water production systems happen in just 10 years. Due to the recent price drop, Petrobras subsea engineering area has faced a demand to develop simpler and cost efficient solutions to reduce Pre-Salt CAPEX and OPEX. The objective of this paper is to review how Petrobras subsea area is dealing with these challenges since the discovery of Pre-Salt in 2006 until the current downturn of the oil and gas industry. As a reaction to that, Petrobras has been running an internal strategy called Subsea Cost Reduction Plan - PRCSub. The main purpose of this program is to search for the biggest cost reduction opportunities and to promote a full integration among Petrobras subsea team and suppliers. The PRCSub has delivered excellent results. Around US$ 500 million in savings were registered between 2014 and 2015 in the subsea scope, and between 25% of CAPEX reduction was achieved in Pre-Salt developments due to optimization initiatives for subsea design. This paper presents a practical approach to improving the knowledge and awareness of solar power systems by using a demonstration unit in an analog electronics course. The unit AIDS instructors in teaching an introductory-level laboratory experiment focused on solar power harvesting and storage and enables instructors to bring in a functional system into labs or classrooms for upper-class undergraduate electrical and computer engineering students. The unit can be used to demonstrate many of the aspects of solar power systems, helping instructors address sustainability and renewable energy issues. Solar power systems based on photovoltaic (Pv) cells have been successfully deployed as renewable energy sources. They have become one of the promising technologies, providing a sustainable energy source as many natural resources are depleting. Due to the importance and wide acceptance of this technology, a demonstration unit has been developed to introduce solar power systems to students at various stages in their education. The approach to improving the students' knowledge of solar power systems is to integrate students' knowledge and experiences with basic electric circuits acquired from their first electronics course and to enhance their learning about new technologies through hands-on experiments in labs or classroom demonstrations. The unit would help students better understand renewable energy by teaching them how to obtain environment-friendly energy from sunlight. It will provide students with an opportunity to apply their knowledge in science and technology to solve a real-world problem. The unit includes a custom-designed light fixture consisting of thirty (30) high-power LEDs as an optical energy source, two 1-watt solar panels as the energy harvesting devices, a fixture for adjusting the solar panel angle, a battery charge controller, voltage and current meters for measuring power, a variable resistor and switches for measuring the I-v characteristics of the pa

This paper presents a methodology for designing an athermalised dual field of view zoom lens in long wave infrared (8 mu m - 12 mu m) spectral band by using the benefits of paraxial optics. By using this design methodology the optical designer can develop many types of complex optical systems in a straightforward way. The key feature of this design methodology relies on utilization of paraxial optics for defining the initial positions of the optical elements. The optical design is based on moving a single lens for changing the optical system's FOv thereby reducing the number of moving parts and simplifying the assembly procedure of the system. The optical design begins with optimization process using paraxial optics. Then the optical design using paraxial optics is used as a template for designing the final optical system by lens material selection for compensating the shift in system's focus due to thermal effects and lens thickness tuning.

The art of lens design has long been divided into two camps: theorists and number crunchers. Both camps have vocal supporters, both manage to get the job done, and both occasionally voice disdain for the other. This paper presents the case for number crunching-while recognizing the important contributions that theorists have made and continue to make. We illustrate this case by designing a zoom lens with no starting design and minimum direction from the designer. To this end we use a feature called ZSEARCH (TM) found in the program SYNOPSYS (TM)(1).
