Head-up Display (HUD) is a safety feature for automobile drivers. Although there have been some HUD systems in commercial product already, their images are too small to show assistance information. Another problem, the volume of HUD is too large. We proposed a HUD including micro-projectors, rear-projection screen, microlens array (MLA) and the light source is 28 mm x 14 mm realized a 200 mm x 100 mm image in 3 meters from drivers. We want to use the MLA to reduce the volume by virtual image stitching. We design the HUD's package dimensions is 12 cm x 12 cm x 9 cm. It is able to show speed, map-navigation and night vision information. We used Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) as our image source due to its brighter image output required and the minimum volume occupancy. The MLA is a multi aperture system. The proposed MLA consists of many optical channels each transmitting a segment of the whole field of view. The design of the system provides the stitching of the partial images, so that we can see the whole virtual image. (C) 2016 optical Society of America

This paper presents the results obtained from fibre Bragg grating (FBG) sensors integrated into a railway current-collecting pantograph for accurate measurement of contact force and contact location when it is subjected to various temperature conditions. The temperature change of the pantograph is simulated, at the industrial laboratory of Brecknell Willis in the UK, by changing the DC current applied to pantograph from 0 to 1500 A. This test is primarily designed to verify the effectiveness of the temperature compensation mechanism built in the FBG sensor design. For this verification, 3 thermocouples co-located with the FBG sensor packages are used to measure the temperature change seen from 25 degrees C to 55 degrees C. The tests were repeated several times and the sensor system has shown its temperature-independence, confirming that the intrinsic cross-sensitivity of FBGs to temperature variation for strain measurement has been fully compensated through the use of this innovative sensor design and data processing.

In this work, an optical design approach is presented to design an ultrashort throw distance projection system by combination of an off-the-shelf refractive lens and two off-axis freeform mirrors. These two freeform mirrors are used to greatly shorten the projection distance by more than three times compared to conventional (rotationally symmetric) systems, while still maintaining a good imaging quality. Firstly, a direct design method that enables the simultaneous calculation of two off-axis freeform-profile mirrors by partially coupling more than three fields is introduced. The specifications of the conventional refractive lens are taken into account during this procedure. The pupil matching principle is applied to ensure good performance between the two sub-systems. The calculated mirrors then serve as a good starting point for optimization using commercial optical design software. To step from freeform profiles to freeform surfaces, the calculated two profiles are fitted into odd polynomials to evaluate the image quality and then re-fitted into XY polynomials for further optimization. Finally, the polynomial coefficients of the two freeform mirrors are imported into the optical design program. The merit function is built from RMS spot radii over the full field, and additional constraints are made for correcting distortion. After optimization, the calculated initial design quickly converges to a well performing imaging system. As an example, an ultrashort throw distance projection lens with a large 80-inch diagonal image at 400mm throw distance is designed, analyzed and compared with literature data. The values of MTF are over 0.6 at 0.5 lp/mm and the distortion is less than 1.5%: showing a very good and well balanced imaging performance over the entire field of view.

Dual-band and wide-band lenses covering both the MWIR and LWIR spectral bands are increasingly needed as dual-band MWIR/LWIR detectors have become prevalent and broadband applications have expanded. currently in dual-band /wide-band applications, the use of more than three elements per lens group and the use of chalcogenide glass is common. This results in expensive systems. Also, many chalcogenides are available only in small diameters, which is a problem for large aperture broadband lenses. In this paper an investigation of cost-effective designs for dual-band MWIR/LWIR lens using only widely available IR materials, specifically Ge, ZnSe and ZnS were performed. An athermalized dual-band MWIR/LWIR using these three materials is presented. The performance analysis of this lens shows that this design form with these three common IR materials works well in certain applications. The required large size blanks of these materials can be easily obtained. Traditional chromatic aberration correction without diffraction for either wide-band or dual-band application was employed. In addition, the methods of harmonic diffraction for dual-band applications, especially with one narrow band, were used for two different presented designs.

Towards Self-testing Quantum Random Number Generators in Integrated design

Truly random numbers are in great demand in various applications. Self-testing quantum random number generators provide a way to verify that random numbers indeed come from quantum effects. optical quantum random number generators of this type are the most promising but due to their relative complexity have been realized only as a macroscopic prototype. Miniaturization of such devices opens the way to commercial use. Quantum photonics provides the means to achieve this goal. We discuss general design of self-testing optical quantum random number generator and the ways to implement it as a compact integrated photonic circuit within current technological reach.

Microbial Fuel Cells (MFCs) are the promising devices which can produce electricity by anaerobic fermentation of organic / inorganic matter from easily metabolized biomass to complex wastewater using microbes as biocatalysts. MFC technology has been found as a potential technology for electricity generation and concomitant wastewater treatment. However, the high cost of the components and low efficiency are barricading the commercialization of MFC when compared with other energy generating systems. The performance of an MFC is largely relying on the reactor design and electrode materials. On the way to improve the efficiency of an MFC, tremendous exercises have been carried out to explore new electrode materials and reactor designs in recent decades. The current review is excogitated to amass the progress in design and electrode materials, which could bolster further investigations on MFCs to improve their performance, mitigate the cost and successful implementation of technology in field applications as well.

This work is based on the development of LED using a circular chip of ZnSe. Proper analyses of the proposed LED are performed by adding optical transition and non-radiative recombination processes. The voltage applied to the ZnSe LED ranges from 0 v to 3.5 v. The current-voltage characteristic and the flow of current density are obtained. At 2.5 v, the carriers move towards n-contact hence reduces the internal quantum efficiency. The carriers are observed to drift in opposite direction of the electric field until recorded voltage of 3.5 v where both carriers in line with the electric field. The emission at low voltage in p-layer is localized and caused the efficiency to reduce considerably.

Over the past few decades, a current comparator in CMOS technology has been used in the wide range of application in analogue, multiple-valued logic (MvL) circuits and other electronic products. current comparator usually used in analog to digital (ADC) conversion and any sensing detector or devices. The design of comparator has been successfully performed by applying several techniques and approach to improve the performance. This paper presents an overview of evolutionary CMOS current comparator, describing the contributions in low power and high speed according a collection of existing proposal. various schemes and information have been taken to help researcher who will continue work on significant further developments. Lastly, some consideration of recent architectures such as power consumption and speed in current comparator are presented. © 2016 IEEE.

Autonomous vehicles are becoming a new trend in automotive industry. The rapid developments in this field portend to a future where current vehicles are replaced by autonomous ones. There is a need for sophisticated and responsive traffic control mechanisms for such future systems. There is also a need for generic framework for developing and studying autonomous road traffic systems. This paper describes the design and development of a Cloud centric Architecture and simulation framework for Navigation and Traffic control of Autonomous vehicles (CANTAv) for developing navigation and control systems for automated vehicles and vehicular traffic. The framework is based on message passing which is extensible. It is designed to provide facilities for navigating the vehicle, clear traffic congestion by re-routing traffic. As interfacing such an architecture with real world autonomous vehicles is not feasible, and no existing simulation framework supports such an architecture, an agent based simulation framework, CANTAv simulation framework, is developed for simulation and visualisation of road networks and autonomous vehicular traffic on them. The developed system was tested and validated successfully using several scenarios. Performance of the system is analysed from the system and vehicle perspectives for different transportation network and vehicle arrangements in the system.

The origami-based folded core has a broad prospect in applications. However, the fabrication difficulties limit its developments due to the complicate structures with multiple zigzags and fluctuations. In this study, several feasible methods to fabricate polymer origami-based folded core were proposed. Based on the analysis of folded structural features, the vacuum forming process of polymer v-type folded core was deeply investigated. Wall thickness distributions of the folded structure on polyvinyl chloride (PvC) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) sheets were measured. The results showed that the wall thickness along the straight crease line presents a single peak distribution, while that along the zigzag one shows a dual peak distribution, and the wall thickness of the top zigzag crease line is more uniform and large than that of the bottom one. The mold temperature, polymer sheet temperature and material properties of polymer have great influence on product thickness. vacuum forming is a feasible way to fabricate polymer origami-based folded core, and the high-quality fabrication of folded structure may be accomplished by designing more reasonable forming mold and selecting optical process parameters.
