We describe the design of a high-throughput pushbroom imaging spectrometer and telescope system that is capable of Landsat swath and resolution while providing better than 10 nm per pixel spectral resolution. The design is based on a 3200 x 480 element x 18 mu m pixel size focal plane array, two of which are utilized to cover the full swath. At an optical speed of F/1.8, the system is the fastest proposed to date to our knowledge. The utilization of only two spectrometer modules fed from the same telescope reduces system complexity while providing a solution within achievable detector technology. Predictions of complete system response are shown. Also, it is shown that detailed ghost analysis is a requirement for this type of spectrometer and forms an essential part of a complete design.

The advantages of using the broadband and low-loss distribution attributes of photonics to enhance the sensing capabilities of microwave systems are well known. In this talk, we review the salient features of photonics that allow them to make unique contributions towards ultra-wideband signal processing. A key component used in the RF-photonic links of these applications is the electro-optic modulator (EOM), typically of the Mach Zehnder (MZ) design. We first present, in Section 2, an optical sideband measurement approach (2) that allows us to characterize the microwave response and RF-v of MZ EOMs at frequencies beyond those supported by current swept-frequency instrumentation. In Sections 3 and 4, we summarize, respectively, the progress made in the topical areas of wideband photonic-assisted analog-to-digital conversion (ADC) and RF-photonic filtering.

GaAs phototransducers with 5 to 12 p/n junctions are shown to demonstrate breakthrough performance in optical conversion efficiency ranging from 65% to just under 70%. In particular, for a current-matched 12 junction device we have recorded an efficiency of 66.5% at v oc = 14.46v (open circuit voltage) with an approximately 650 suns / 841 nm monochromatic source. Our simulations reproduce the Pv characteristics of the physical devices with good (~ %) accuracy for v oc and I sc (short circuit current), which allows us to numerically study the influence of experimental conditions and design factors on device performance. Moreover, our simulations suggest that measured efficiencies are very close to the theoretical limits of the heterostructures under consideration. Our focus in these proceedings is twofold: a) to present an overview of the results of these experiments as well as b) study the factors which limit simulated device performance with the objective of attaining monochromatic conversions efficiencies exceeding 70%.

Here we present an initial demonstration of a dual junction step-cell using single junction (SJ) GaAs 0.76 P 0.24 cell, grown on Si 1-y Ge y /Si substrates, as the top cell and Si as the bottom cell. To demonstrate step-cell, two SJ cells are connected in series, without removing SiGe/Si carrier from III-v cell, and illuminated Si cell area is varied. Measured efficiency of optimized demo step-cell under 1 sun and without anti-reflective coating on III-v cell is ~11.8% Using SJ cells characterization and optical data, we estimate maximum efficiency of bonded 1-μm GaAs 0.76 P 0.24 // 650-μm Si step-cell to be ~26% at optimized total-to-top cell area ratio equal to 1.1. Results presented here show that step-cell can be used as added optimization design parameter for tandem cells.

The electronics of AGATA HPGe segmented gamma ray detector faces a new challenge in the search of a bigger integration and cost reduction for the phase 2 of the experiment going beyond 45 crystals. This opportunity can be used to introduce a new architecture based on commercial standards while keeping backward compatibility with current electronics. In this sense, new FPGA devices and fast Ethernet links can be used to ease the preprocessing and control task and allowing for processor farms to distribute the processing load. At the same time, modularity should be a key feature of the design in the aim to make it upgradable in time and technology. This paper presents the design of a new preprocessing and control board that could fulfill with the experiment requirements having in mind that it should not be only a new system but also should serve as replacement of the current electronics. The design is intended to process the data coming from 3 crystals (114 channels) in the same board, with a total aggregate bandwidth of 216 Gpbs using 2 Gbps input optical fiber links in SNAP12 format and with a data readout done through Ethernet fiber optics. It is expected that, with this new system, the level of integration will raise up to 3 times while cost will scale down a 30% with respect to the current electronics.

In this study, the optical performance of a 90 degree prism working in the mid-wave infrared region with the purpose of carrying a beam of light from one optical system to another in an unconventional way is discussed. First, a group of mirrors is considered as a design alternative to lower the overall cost of the system. However, using mirrors greatly increases the diameter of the beam due to the rays coming from wide field of view angles. Another drawback of mirrors is that having separate mirrors requires precise alignment for the system to work at full performance which is difficult for the given application. However, these alignment issues are not valid for a single piece prism. Therefore, a single piece prism is the preferred option and has been taken into account in this study. Material selection is important, especially in the mid-wave infrared region where the index of refraction differs greatly from material to material. Silicon and Germanium are the materials preferred because of their high index of refraction and transmission characteristics. Aside from optical properties, these materials are also considered in terms of manufacturability. Also, options for the coatings to be applied to reflecting surfaces of the prism are discussed with regard to the transmission loss within the system. In order to have total internal reflection within a prism, coatings must be chosen carefully to handle transmission loss at the reflecting surfaces. All of the system parameters are examined using sequential and non-sequential modes of ZEMAX OpticStudio software.

This paper aims to present the design and simulation of two proposed low cost solar cell structures; namely, pn and npn. Both structures are based on commercially available low cost heavily doped silicon wafers. Their operation relies on the idea of vertical generation and lateral collection of the light generated carriers. A detailed qualitative analysis of both structures is given and verified using advanced TCAD tools. The comparison is analyzed firstly regarding the illuminated Iv characteristics. The open circuit voltage (v oc ), short circuit current density (J sc ), fill factor (F.F) and conversion efficiency (η) are calculated. Additionally, the optical performance is calculated and compared for both structures. The quantum efficiency, the spectral response and the absorption curve are compared. The presented results show that npn structure gives better electrical and optical performance than the pn one.

We highlight the advantages of dynamic wavelength allocation and path rerouting in hybrid optical flow-switched data center networks compared with static electronic packet-switched data center networks. current electronic packet-switched networks perform routing based on lookup tables and shortest path routing over high speed optical connections. However, load balancing and path rerouting are not designed in coordination with the optical data plane. In this work, we design and analyze the performance of load balancing and resource allocation in hybrid flow data center architectures. In the hybrid flow architecture, the transport layer and control plane are responsible for load balancing, congestion control and reliable data delivery in wavelength division multiplexed networks. The transport layer abstracts the underlying network and data link layers from user applications. Applications are unaware of whether flows are transmitted via the electronic data plane, optical data plane, or both, where the relevant metric for applications is transaction delay. We show that the data center architecture that minimizes delay in the presence of elephant flows and dynamic loads is the hybrid flow architecture with dynamic resource allocation.

Two techniques for the measurement of aspheres as well as freeforms are presented. The first method, the tilted wave interferometer, is a full aperture interferometric measurement method without any moving parts during the measurement. The second method applies an optical single point sensor in conjunction with two translational and one rotational axes. Both techniques are compared by measuring a selected asphere and a special freeform surface. Differences between both measurement principles are discussed.

Conventional multichannel imaging systems comprise of many optical channels having similar imaging properties, namely field-of-view (FOv) and angular resolution/magnification. We demonstrated that the different optical channels can be designed such that each optical channel captures a different FOv and angular resolution compared to its neighboring channels. We designed and experimentally demonstrated a three-channel multiresolution imaging system where the first optical channel has the narrowest FOv (7 degrees) and highest angular resolution (0.0096 degrees) and the third optical channel has the widest FOv (80 degrees) and lowest angular resolution (0.0780 degrees)(1). The second optical channel has intermediate properties. The performance of the demonstrated three-channel imaging system however was affected by chromatic aberrations as it was designed for a single wavelength of 587.6 nm. The first optical channel was largely influenced by longitudinal chromatic aberration while the third channel by lateral chromatic aberration. Therefore, we have replaced the aspherical refractive lenses by hybrid lenses, which contain diffractive structures on top of their refractive surfaces, in the three-channel multiresolution imaging system to reduce its chromatic aberrations. The performance of the three channels with hybrid lenses is compared with those of the corresponding channels without hybrid lenses. The longitudinal color aberration of the first optical channel has been reduced from 1.7 mm to 0.2 mm;whereas the lateral color aberration of the third optical channel has been reduced from 250 mu m to 14 mu m. In conclusion, the hybrid lenses have reduced the chromatic aberrations of the three channels and extended the operating spectral range of the imaging system in the visible wavelength range.
