Hereditary degenerative diseases of retina (such as Retinitis pigmentosa and age related macular degeneration), cause photoreceptor cell loss leading to progressive visual impairment. Since there is no medical treatment to reverse/ overcome the effects of photoreceptor loss, restoring vision with the aid of a prosthetic seems to be the only option. Different types of prosthesis incorporating different geometries and design of multielectrode arrays have been developed to be surgically placed in and around retina. However patients implanted with these devices have been able to see only flickers of light (or phosphenes). Therefore in the present work we have come up with an alternate strategy of stimulating retina through chemicals: Chemoretina. Briefly, our idea involves stimulating voltage gated sodium channels of retinal bipolar cells using drugs, in a manner analogous to photoreceptor stimulation. This paper illustrates our approach to Chemoretina and current developments so far.

The Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) is an explorer-class planet finder whose principal goal is to detect small planets with bright host stars in the solar neighborhood. The TESS payload consists of four identical cameras with seven lens elements, each made from various Ohara glass. The successful implementation of both the panchromatic and the thermal aspect of these lens assemblies requires accurate knowledge of the thermal and spectral dependence of the refractive index in the wavelength and temperature ranges of operation. Hence, this paper reports measurements of the refractive index for the following Ohara glasses over the wavelength range 0.42 - 1.10 mu m and temperature range 120 300 K: S-LAH55, S-LAH55v, S-LAH59, S-LAM3, S-NBM51, S-NPH2, S-PHM52, and S-TIH14. The measurements were performed using the Cryogenic High Accuracy Refraction Measuring System (CHARMS) facility at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. Dense coverage of absolute refractive indices of these glasses over the aforementioned wavelength and temperature ranges allowed accurate determination of spectral thermo-optic coefficients (dn/dT) and spectral dispersions (dn/d lambda) as a function of temperature. A comparison of measured, temperature-dependent indices to literature values is presented for S-PHM52 and S-TIH14. A comparison to Ohara's catalog indices at room temperature is presented for all of the materials.

For emerging high volume applications such as wireless sensor networks, energy harvesting, or consumer biometrics, bandgap voltage references in CMOS may be viewed in a more favorable light by semiconductor manufacturing due to their low cost, ruggedness, and availability of the predictable parasitic bipolar junction transistor (BJT). To generate a bandgap voltage (vBG) reference with a near zero temperature coefficient (TC), a BJT's base-emitter voltage (vBE) with a negative TC is added to a gained-up thermal voltage (vT) with a positive TC. However, ultra low power applications prohibit use of conventional bandgaps because of the impractically large passive resistors they require to make their v T 's gain factor (g) in v BG = v BE + g.v T . One of the contributions of the proposed reference is to eliminate the large passive resistor in an ultra low power bandgap reference. Batteryless and wireless electronics, in general, may be subject to less orderly power supply patterns. To guard band against jittery supply and disorderly power up patterns, especially in mission critical bioelectronics applications, another contribution of the proposed design is that the positive feedback loop associated with bandgap's amplifier (that is vulnerable to transients) can be eliminated here without deterring overall performance. Ultra low currents are generally accompanied with increased noise. Additional contribution of this bandgap's topology is that its noise is reduced via dominant use of PMOSFETs, with low 1/f noise, in pertinent signal paths. Lastly, the operating currents of the entire bandgap is mostly independent of threshold voltage (v TH ) and chiefly a function of mobility, u, that benefits manufacturability and die yield because u is more tightly controllable (compared to poly resistance or v TH , for example). Distributed generation (DG) is commonly used to supply the local loads. The penetration of distributed generation leads to violating the relay coordination in the distribution network. The interconnection of DG affects miscoordination of distribution system protection, because of the generator ability to contribute large fault currents to the fault point. The impact of DG on relay coordination affect the operating time of relay. The CTI associated with primary and backup relay pairs is getting violated due to changes in fault current level. Thus, coordination between primary and backup relays fails in the presence of distributed Generation. Hence, the interconnection of DG in the distribution system causes an adverse impact on protection coordination. Relay coordination problem has many constraints due to coordination criteria. Heuristic based optimization techniques are used to solve the optimization problems. These techniques have a drawback of converging to the values that may not be optimum due to the wide range of design variables and difficulty in getting an initial feasible solution with a short range of design variables. This paper presents a new algorithm to overcome the problem of the initial feasible solution in determining the optimum settings of OCRs. In this context, the optimization problem is formulated as constrained non-linear optimization problem and is determining using Genetic Algorithm (GA). This algorithm is tested on two different networks that found suitable to give satisfactory results.

In current developments of semiconductor memory cell design specially designing of static random access memory cell is become a major critical issue, due to the fact that the process technology is scaling to newer node very rapidly and hence the transistor size reduces most frequently. This paper analyzes the performance of a single ended SRAM cell for low power operation. As per the state of the art the single ended SRAM cell should operate at lowest power supply as possible so the presented design uses a single bit line for the read as well as writes operation of the cell which reduces the power requirements for the proper operation of the cell. This type of operation also improves the read stability and writes ability of the cell which overall improves the stability of the cell which is a critical factor for the SRAM cell designing. The proposed design has the enhanced transistor models for efficient operation. The main objective of this work is to operate the SRAM cell with proper stability and with low voltage. The standard 90nm processes technology is used in the modeling of transistors. The simulation result shows the low power operation of the cell with improved stability. The average transition power is obtained as 1.1μw with the power supply of 1.6v which shows the low power operation of the cell. Thus this work evaluates the performance of the single ended SRAM cell for low power operation with low voltage operation.

The Uv LED heterostructures have been obtained by HvPE approach and investigated by XRD, AFM and PL methods. The experiment shows that the peak wavelength of Uv LEDs is in the range of 360-365 nm with FWHM of 10-13 nm. At operating current of 20 mA the active region temperature Tj is 43 degrees C, the output optical power and efficiency - 1.14 mW and 1.46 %, respectively. It is presented a model based on corpuscular Monte Carlo method in order to calculate the light extraction index. The simulation results allow us to propose the ways to increase the efficiency of Uv LEDs by 3-4 times: surface interfaces texturing, optimization of the design of heterostructures, and the use of lenses.

The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) will be the next generation ground-based observatory for gamma-ray astronomy, covering an energy range from a few tens of Gev to a few hundred Tev. The CTA project is currently in the design and prototyping phase, the start of construction is planned for 2016. The planned sensitivity of CTA improves on current ground based Cherenkov telescope experiments by about an order of magnitude. In the core energy range this sensitivity will be dominated by up to 40 Medium-Sized Telescopes (MSTs). These telescopes, of a modified Davies-Cotton mount type with a reflector diameter of 12 m, are currently being prototyped. A full-size mechanical prototype has been operating in Berlin since 2012. Several types of prototype mirrors have been developed and tested, and are mounted on the telescope. CCD cameras with various lenses are mounted on the prototype for studying deformation of the structure, testing alignment techniques, and telescope pointing using astrometry methods. The report will focus on results of optical and structural measurements, commissioning and testing of the MST prototype in Berlin, as well as the final design.

The construction of a prototype Schwarzschild-Couder telescope (pSCT) started in early June 2015 at the Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory in Southern Arizona, as a candidate medium-sized telescope for the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA). Compared to current Davies-Cotton telescopes, this novel instrument with an aplanatic two-mirror optical system will offer a wider field-of-view and improved angular resolution. In addition, the reduced plate scale of the camera allows the use of highly-integrated photon detectors such as silicon photo multipliers. As part of CTA, this design has the potential to greatly improve the performance of the next generation ground-based observatory for very high-energy (E>60 Gev) gamma-ray astronomy. In this contribution we present the design and performance of both optical and alignment systems of the pSCT.
