A new current-mode analog computational unit (ACU) is presented. The ACU can be digitally programmed to produce multiplying, squaring and inverse functions. The design is based on using MOSFETs operating in subthreshold region to achieve ultra-low power dissipation. The circuit is operated from a +/- 0.75v DC supply. The proposed circuit has been simulated using Tanner in 0.35 mu m TSMC CMOS process. Simulation results confirm the functionality of the circuit. The total power consumption is 2.3 mu W, total harmonic distortion is 1.1%, maximum nonlinearity error is 0.3% and the bandwidth is 2.3MHz.

This paper presents the ongoing research efforts in optical communication transceiver SoC design for emerging fiber-wireless mobile networks and next generation 200/400GbE optical networks using advanced CMOS technologies. First, a 4-Gb/s fiber-to-mm-wave baseband-over-fiber (BoF) modulator SoC using 65-nm CMOS with a fully integrated 850-nm wavelength optical receiver front-end for short-range wireless backhaul connectivity is reviewed. Next, design considerations for an improved 10-Gb/s BoF I/Q modulator SoC with integrated 60-GHz power amplifier is described. Lastly, a novel PAM4/NRZ transceiver architecture featuring BER built-in-self-test is discussed.

The Multi-Object Broadband Imaging Echellette (MOBIE) is the seeing-limited, visible-wavelength imaging multi-object spectrograph (MOS) planned for first-light use on the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT). The MOBIE project to date has been a collaboration lead by UC Observatories (CA), and including the UH Institute for Astronomy (HI), and the NAOJ (Tokyo, Japan). The current MOBIE optical design provides two color channels, spanning the 310-550nm and 550-1000nm passbands, and a combination of reflection gratings, prisms, and mirrors to enable direct imaging and three spectroscopic modes with resolutions (lambda/Delta lambda) of roughly 1000, 3000, and 8000 in both color channels, across a field of view that ranges from roughly 8x3 arcmin to 3x3 arcmin, depending on resolution mode. The conceptual design phase for the MOBIE instrument has been underway since 2008 and is expected to end in 2015. We report here on developments since 2010, including assembly of the current project team, instrument and camera optical designs, instrument control systems, atmospheric dispersion corrector, slit-mask exchange systems, collimator, dichroic and fold optics, dispersing and cross-dispersing optics, refracting cameras, shutters, filter exchange systems, science detector systems, and instrument structures.

In III-v concentrator applications, sunlight is focused with wide angular distribution that limits the effectiveness of conventional thin-film AR coatings. Furthermore the transmission properties are generally degraded non-uniformly over the electromagnetic spectrum, which in the case of multi-junction solar cells leads to additional sub-cell current matching related losses. Here, and in an attempt to identify a better alternative to the conventional planar layer ARCs for III-v multi-junction concentrator cells in case of with/without protective cover glass in conjunction with wide optical aperture angles, a systematic analysis of design parameters and angular dependent antireflective properties of dielectric gratings has been undertaken, through the implementation of sub-wavelength 2D pyramidal gratings of ZnS and TiO2. The study indicated limited improvement for devices operated with SiO2 like cover glass. In the absence of SiO2 like cover glass, the evaluation indicated that reflection-loss related current losses can be reduced by 2-3 fold compared to their double-layer ARC counterparts. i.e. for a 3J metamorphic device this lead to a current improvement of 0.7 mA/cm(2) per concentration for a 60 degree aperture angles

Due to the light weight, high strength to weight ratio, corrosion resistance and other advantages, natural fibre based composites are becoming important composite materials in mechanical engineering fields. The current project emphasizes the newly identified Pandanus Fibre (Pandanus Fascicularis) which is extracted from the stem of screw pine tree by the manual water treatment process. The mechanical properties of chopped Pandanus fibre by Polyester composites are investigated and compared with the similar natural fibres in the fibre reinforced composite material field. The composite plates were fabricated with raw pandanus fibres by compression moulding method with varying weight percentage and lengths of fibre. © (2014) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

Following the recent developments in the field of power electronic valves, High voltage Direct current (HvDC) systems have become more attractive in power systems, and are widely recognised as a suitable tool for future power systems, especially in bulk power transmission over long distances. Grounding electrodes are an important part with significant roles in the operation of the HvDC systems. In this paper, first a brief review of different types of HvDC configuration is presented. Essential requirements in the design and operation of the HvDC grounding system are then presented and discussed. In the relevant studies, environmental impacts of HvDC electrodes, e.g. step voltage, effect on the buried metallic structures, DC magnetic bias of power transformers and mitigation methods are highlighted. Finally, a basic modelling of different physical configurations of HvDC electrode resistance is performed.

design of a multi-domain engineering system can be complicated due to its complex structure and dynamic coupling between domains. Ideally, designing a multi-domain system should be done in an integrated and concurrent manner, where dynamic interactions between domains in the entire system have to be considered simultaneously, throughout the design process. In recent years, researchers have made some progress in the integrated and optimal design of multi-domain systems. Dynamic modeling tools such as Bond Graphs and Linear Graphs have been considered for modeling multi-domain systems, which can facilitate the design process. In the process of design optimization, a rather challenging task is to concurrently satisfy multiple design objectives. Methods of evolutionary computing, genetic programing in particular, have received much attention in recent years for application in design optimization. These methods can be extended to evolutionary optimization, which may involve complex and non-analytic objective functions and a variety of design specifications. More recently, machine health monitoring system (MHMS) has been considered for integration into the scheme of design evolution even though no concrete developments have made in this regard. In this paper, a framework of design weakness detection through machine health monitoring for evolutionary design optimization of multi-domain system is proposed. MHMS is integrated with evolutionary design optimization to make the overall process of design evolution more effective and feasible from the practical point of view. Information form MHMS is utilized to detect the "sites" or "candidates" of design weakness, which will involve computation of a new measure that can reflect the quality of the current design. These candidates of design weakness are then provided to the process of evolutionary design optimization. An overview of fiber optic sensors for temperature, pressure, strain, and fatigue of subsea structures is provided. current progress details efforts to ensure proper installation and bonding to existing risers, flow-lines, mooring lines, trees, and other structures in actual subsea environments. developments include clamp prototypes, bonding techniques, long-term fatigue analysis, sensor calibration, and temperature compensation. Fiber optic technology in subsea monitoring began over 20 years ago by migrating expertise from decommissioning of rocket motors. The first installations were on new installations of subsea pipelines, production risers, and drilling risers to measure strain and vibration for fatigue life monitoring. Of particular interest for these systems were detecting riser vortex induced vibration and strain throughout the touchdown zone. A prior limitation was that sensor installation was only performed top-side on new subsea equipment. This recent work demonstrates the capability to deploy on existing subsea equipment. The novel contributions of this study are the developments that optimize the clamp design, bonding techniques, and factors that allow long-term service life. Button pull tests validate long term service life after the clamps are subjected to accelerated aging tests. Details on the subsea calibration also provide insight on the recent progress with post-installed sensors. The purpose of reliable post-installed advanced sensors is not only to detect failures of subsea infrastructure but also to warn of signs of fatigue or hydrate formation that contribute to catastrophic failures. The calibration and testing mentioned in this paper are part of the Clear Gulf study, a collaboration formed in 2010 between the offshore energy industry and NASA. The study continues to make advances in highly sensitive monitoring systems that anticipate failures, catastrophic events, and flow assurance issues.

Since 2005, in the scope of "DEFIR", the joint laboratory between CEA-LETI and SOFRADIR, p-on-n photodiodes and FPAs (Focal Plane Arrays) have been developed and optimised. This p-on-n architecture, obtained by As implantation into an In doped base layer, offered a significant decrease of the dark current compared to our n-on-p standard architecture. Following these developments, this p-on-n technology has been successfully transferred to SOFRADIR for industrial production [1]. Results obtained on Tv format, 15μm pitch, showed that this first architecture has reached its maturity with excellent results in LWIR and MWIR. In parallel, further developments and studies are still in progress at CEA-LETI in order to improve the photodiode performance and understanding of the physical mechanisms. In this way, new p-on-n architectures have been studied on LPE (Liquid Phase Epitaxy) in the vLWIR spectral band. Using this new architecture, the transition temperature, where the dark current shifts from diffusion limited regime to another one, has been lowered by more than 10K. Extremely low dark current has been obtained, down to 50 e-/s/pixel. The p-on-n technology also been studied at DEFIR in SWIR range specifically for space applications were 2Kx2K MCT arrays are required with dark current below 0.01e-/s at 18μm pitch in the 80-140 K. Finally in the MWIR and LWIR spectral bands, the reduction of production cost and the increase of resolution call for smaller pixel pitches with larger format. In this way, first results have been obtained on test diodes with pixel pitch as low as 5 μm. The I(v) and R(v) plots illustrate the very good characteristic of our p-on-n diodes. These photodiodes present large reverse breakdown voltage, witnessing the quality of our device fabrication procedure. © 2014 SPIE.
