In this work a novel concept based on low power semiconducting, mid infrared components and new, low cost measurement cells for use in harsh environmental conditions, such as permafrost areas, is presented. Due to the small changes of the environmental carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration in this area a high resolution of 5 ppm CO2 is required. The current sensor design achieves a resolution of up to 6 ppm CO2 and offers further optimization potential at overall low costs. (C) 2014 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Germanium (Ge) is an optically active material with the advantages of Si-CMOS compatibility and monolithic integration. It has great potential to be used as the light emitter for Si photonics. Tensile strain and n-type doping are two key properties in Ge to achieve optical gain. This thesis mainly focuses on: (1) physical understandings of the threshold behavior of Ge-on-Si bulk laser and the temperature dependent performance; (2) process developments to grow and planarize the epitaxial Ge on Si in oxide trenches and corners; (3) introduction of n-type dopant into Ge-on-Si thin films while studying the threading dislocation behavior in n-Ge during annealing; (4) design an external cavity Ge laser integrated with Si waveguides for a low threshold current and single mode operation. Heavy n-type doping was observed to change the Ge electronic band structure by band gap narrowing effect. We also found a failure of using a simple Drude model to explain free carrier absorption in n-Ge. We modified the optical gain simulation based on the above two observations in Ge. We found a broad gain bandwidth of ~ 200 nm from 1550 nm to 1750 nm and a higher net materials gain. We predicted a theoretical lasing threshold current density of 5~10 kA/cm² in the bulk Ge laser device with the n-type doping of mid-10¹⁹ cm-³ at room temperature. We also predicted the Ge laser device would have better temperature stability regarding the threshold current compared to the III-v laser. Single crystalline Ge was epitaxial grown on Si in oxide trenches using ultra high vacuum chemical vapor deposition. The selective growth lead to the faceting in Ge because of the different growth rates of crystal orientations. We developed a suitable photolithography and oxide etch process to get the vertical oxide sidewall for Ge trench filling. We also tested the Ge growth in the T-shape corners to improve the reflectivity at the waveguide end. The T-shape structure was also useful for the Ge/Si waveguide coup

A frequency-stabilized diode laser is widely used for applications in laser cooling and high-resolution spectroscopy. In this work, the 780-nm external cavity diode laser was constructed and subsequently frequency-controlled by three parameters, i.e., temperature, injection current and optical feedback. The laser frequency was measured with respect to the 5S1/2 → 5P3/2 (D2-lines) transition of Rubidium, while the laser mode was characterized by a Fabry-Perot interferometer. The laser temperature was passively controlled to a single value between 20 °C and 25 °C while the injection current was investigated in combination with course and fine adjustments of optical feedback. Only data relevant to a single-mode laser operation was collected. It was found that as the current increased, the laser frequency shifted linearly with slopes approximately 0.5-0.8 GHz/mA. optical feedback from the external cavity was tuned by the voltage applied to the piezoelectric transducer, yielding a linear frequency response of approximately 0.2 GHz/v. The measured parameters were rearranged to represent the island of stability of the laser, suggesting suitable conditions that yielded single-mode operation, at a desirable laser frequency. The results were important for a design of an active feedback, in order to further reduce the frequency linewidth and intensity noise of the laser. © (2014) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

In 2011 Ericsson and Cisco estimated 50 billion Internet connected devices by 2020, encouraged by this industry is developing application frameworks to scale the Internet of Things. This paper presents a survey of commercial frameworks and platforms designed for developing and running Internet of Things applications. The survey covers frameworks supported by big players in the software and electronics industries. The frameworks are evaluated against criteria such as architectural approach, industry support, standards based protocols and interoperability, security, hardware requirements, governance and support for rapid application development. There is a multitude of frameworks available and here a total 17 frameworks and platforms are considered. The intention of this paper is to present recent developments in commercial IoT frameworks and furthermore, identify trends in the current design of frameworks for the Internet of Things;enabling massively connected cyber physical systems.

Wire Electrical discharge Machining plays an important role in the field of electrically conductive material machining. The process has grown exponentially in the past decade due to advantages like high accuracy, precision, ability to achieve complex, intricate shapes on components, unruffled by material hardness, less noise, leaves little residual stress on work piece and the advantage of unmanned machining. A stochastic process in nature, it is difficult to determine parameters that improve cutting rate and surface roughness, the main stay of the metal machining industries. Tungsten carbide is widely used in tool and die making industry mainly due to its extreme hardness;wear resistance, toughness and high temperature stability. Finding optimized parameters for machining performance improvement and optimization would help the manufacturing community. design of experiments with an orthogonal array of L 27, on four critical parameters On-Time, Off-Time, Wire Speed and Peak current with three levels had been carried out. The experimental results were optimized using Taguchi analysis. Analysis of variance was done. Confirmation tests validated that the results for material removal rate and surface roughness, 5.021mm3/min and3.26μm with improvement. The most influential parameters were off-time, wirespeed and on-time for material removal rate and wire-speed current and on-time for surface roughness. Lead-acid battery retreading system is used to improve the discharge performance of lead-acid batteries. And in the system there are too many electrical parameters, such as electric current, voltage and so on, have to been set up. So HMI design plays a significant role in the whole system. This paper offers a method of using DWIN DGUS screen to finish the HMI design of lead-acid battery retreading system. And it introduces the DWIN_v4.9 and OS secondary development platform in detail. Then it describes how to use these two tools to achieve basic functions, such as touching and passwords landing. After applying the HMI design to the system, switching interfaces, using passwords, inputting parameters and other operations all have been achieved successfully. © (2014) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

We summarize the basic aspects of the recently introduced concept of “metamaterial analog computing”. This concept relies on metamaterial structures that are suitably designed so as to perform mathematical operations of choice (e.g., spatial differentiation, integration, or convolution) on the transverse profile of an impinging wave signal as it propagates through them. Within this framework, we illustrate two possible design approaches, present some representative results, and discuss possible future developments.

The Observatorio Astrofisico de Javalambre (OAJ) is a new Spanish astronomical facility particularly designed for carrying out large sky surveys. The OAJ is mainly motivated by the development of J-PAS, the Javalambre-PAU Astrophysical Survey, an unprecedented astronomical survey that aims to observe 8500 deg(2) of the sky with a set of 54 optical contiguous narrow-band filters (FWHM similar to 14 nm) and 5 mid and broad-band ones. J-PAS will provide a low resolution spectrum (R similar to 50) for every pixel of the Northern sky down to AB similar to 22.5 - 23.5 per square arcsecond (at 5 sigma level), depending on the narrow-band filter, and similar to 2 magnitudes deeper for the redder broad-band filters. The main telescope at the OAJ is the Javalambre Survey Telescope (JST/T250), an innovative Ritchey-Chretien, alt-azimuthal, large-etendue telescope with a primary mirror diameter of 2.55 m and 3 deg (diameter) Fov. The JST/T250 is the telescope devoted to conduct J-PAS with JPCam, a panoramic camera of 4.7 deg(2) Fov and a mosaic of 14 large format CCDs that, overall, amounts to 1.2 Gpix. The second largest telescope at the OAJ is the Javalambre Auxiliary Survey Telescope (JAST/T80), a Ritchey-Chretien, german-equatorial telescope of 82 cm primary mirror and 2 deg Fov, whose main goal is to perform J-PLUS, the Javalambre Photometric Local Universe Survey. J-PLUS will cover the same sky area of J-PAS using the panoramic camera T80Cam with 12 filters in the optical range, which are specifically defined to perform the photometric calibration of J-PAS. The OAJ project officially started in mid 2010. Four years later, the OAJ is mostly completed and the first OAJ operations have already started. The civil work and engineering installations are finished, including the telescope buildings and the domes.
