PROBA-3 is a technology mission of the European Space Agency (ESA), devoted to the in-orbit demonstration of formation flying techniques and technologies. Presently in phase B, PROBA-3 will implement a coronagraph (called ASPIICS, "Association de Satellites Pour l'Imagerie et l'Interferometrie de la Couronne Solaire") that will both demonstrate and exploit the capabilities and performance of formation flying. ASPIICS is distributed on two spacecrafts separated by 140m with the external occulting disk hosted by one spacecraft and the telescope (optical camera included) on the other one. ASPIICS will perform high spatial resolution imaging of the solar corona from the coronal base (1.04 solar radii) out to 3 solar radii. ASPIICS is developed by a large consortium of European Institutes and Industries from Belgium, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Luxembourg and Russia. The design studies concern the external occulter mounted on one satellite and the telescope on the other one but also the additional metrology tools that will help checking the formation and ensure that the flight configuration is optimal for observations. PROBA-3/ASPIICS successfully passed the Preliminary design Review (PDR) in April 2013 and is currently in the implementation phase C/D. The present paper will provide the current status of PROBA-3/ASPIICS, a description of the instrument and its expected performance.

We report on efforts to design high efficiency silicon sub-cells for use in multijunction stack devices. Both simulation and experimental work have been performed looking at a silicon solar cell under a truncated spectrum due to the optical filtering of the upper layers in the multijunction stack. The truncation for our case occurs for photon energies above 1.5 e v. Good agreement is seen between the modeling and experiments, with very different design features being identified, as compared to the design for a high efficiency solar cell under a full spectrum. When a well passivated front surface is achieved i.e. low interface recombination velocity, we see that a lightly-doped emitter profile maximizes the open circuit voltage (voc). When a high interface recombination is present, however, heavily-doped profiles exhibit the higher voc values. The impact on short circuit current (Jsc) is seen to be minimal even with large variations in the interface recombination and emitter profiles. © 2013 IEEE.

Path Finding Robot or BEAM (Biological Electronic Aesthetic Mechanical) robot is an obstacle sensing robot, an application of embedded systems that changes its direction of motion when it senses the presence of obstacle in its path. It also acts as an Automatic Guided vehicle (industrial applications) to handle materials. The obstacle is sensed by means of an infra red sensor placed in front end of the robot. When the obstacle is sensed the stepper motor changes the direction of motion of the robot as per the program embedded in it. The path is pre programmed as we know where we use the robot, the change in direction of motion when the obstacle is sensed can also be preprogrammed. We used ATMEL microcontroller (ATMEL 89c51) for controlling the robot. A servo motor is used for the motion of the robot. [1][2][3]The speed of robot's movement can be adjusted by using an appropriate gear set. The robot can be used to transport materials in hazardous environment where it is difficult for human beings to carry that operation. This can be modified slightly and it can be used as a vehicle for aiding blind people. Technology is revolutionizing the medical field with the creation of robotic devices and complex imaging. Though these developments have made operations much less invasive, robotic systems have their own disadvantages that prevent them from replacing surgeons. Robotic surgery can be further divided into three subcategories depending on the degree of surgeon interaction during the procedure, supervisory-controlled, telesurgical, and shared-control. © IEEE 2013.

Degradation phenomena can affect civil structures over their lifespan. The recent advances in nanotechnology and sensing allow to monitor the behaviour of a structure, assess its performance and identify damage at an early stage. Thus, maintenance actions can be carried out in a timely manner, improving structural reliability and safety. Structural Health Monitoring (sum) is traditionally performed at a global level, with a limited number of sensors distributed over a relatively large area of a structure. Thus, only major damage conditions are detectable. Dense sensor networks and innovative structural neural systems, reproducing the structure and the function of the human nervous system, may overcome this drawback of current SHM systems. Miniaturization and embedment are key requirements for successful implementation of structural neural systems. Carbon nanotubes (CNT) can play an attractive role in the development of embedded sensors and smart structural materials, since they provide to traditional materials like cement both structural capability and measurable response to applied stresses, strains, cracks and other flaws. In this paper the main results of an extensive literature review about CNT/cement composites and their self-sensing capabilities are summarized and critically revised. The analysis of experimental results and theoretical developments provides useful design criteria for the fabrication of CNT/cement composites optimized for SHIM applications in civil engineering.

In order for manufacturing companies to thrive in an era of globalization, market pressures and technological developments, quality control is key. Without this aspect, it is not possible to ensure the functionality and quality of products. Due to errors that occur during the manufacturing process, manufactured parts have deviations from their nominal geometry. Therefore, one of the important aspects of the quality control of mechanical parts is geometric inspection. With the help of automated inspection, costs can be reduced during process. In our research project, we have focused on the profile inspection of non-rigid (flexible) parts. In fact, several mechanical parts used in the aeronautic and automotive industries can be considered non-rigid. This category of parts may have significantly different shapes in a free-state condition than the design (nominal) model due to gravity loads and residual stress. Generally, to solve this problem, special inspection fixtures are used in industry to compensate for the deformations of such parts to simulate the use state to perform geometric inspection. These dedicated fixtures are very expensive and the process is very time-consuming which reduces competitiveness. We aim to develop a nonrigid inspection technique to eliminate the need for specialized inspection fixtures by using a non-contact measuring system such as optical scanning and comparing the obtained point cloud from the distorted part with the nominal model to identify deviations. Using a nonrigid registration method and finite element analysis, we will apply a virtual (numerical) inspection fixture instead of a physical fixture. The simulated displacement will be performed with improved boundary conditions for simulating unfixed parts.

This paper describes the history of a laser gyroscope, which originated from one of the fundamental physics area - optics of moving bodies, and in particular, the Sagnac effect. Background and prediction of the first ring laser gyro (RLG), which opened a new era of wave gyroscopes, is described. Its scientific basis was Einstein's theory of stimulated emission, which was expounded by the Nobel laureates N.G. Basov, A.M. Prokhorov and C. Townes that created the world's first quantum generator (maser) - the predecessor of coherent optical radiation - laser. That was enough to create the first laboratory model of the ring laser gyro in 1962. The history of the RLG construction concepts from its first samples of minimal configuration to multi-frequency Zeeman modifications with nonplanar resonators is observed. The leading role of a ring laser gyroscope in the creation of inertial measurement units, strapdown inertial and integrated navigation systems is shown. Special attention is paid to the current state of the gyro market in general and the place of RLG among them. The general trends in the inertial sensors market development are highlighted. The main producers of either RLGs or systems based on them are mentioned. Information on the development of ultra large ring laser gyroscopes is provided.

This paper presents a dual-channel current-mode optical receiver array which exploits the modified current-mirror(CM) transimpedance amplifiers and the gain-scaling limiting amplifiers. Each modified CM-TIA consists of a CM input configuration with a local feedback, a single-to-differential conversion circuit, a differential amplifier stage, and a 50Ω output buffer. Since the modified CM input effectively isolates the photodiode capacitance from the bandwidth determination, it provides considerable bandwidth enhancement. Also, the gain-scaling limiting amplifiers employ the Cherry-Hooper topology and the capacitive source-degeneration technique to maintain wide bandwidth. Test chips were fabricated by using a standard 0.18-μm CMOS technology, demonstrating 3.5Gb/s operation speed per channel even with 0.52pF total input parasitic capacitance (including 0.32pF photodiode capacitance), and 87mW power dissipation (including output buffer) in total from a single 1.8v supply.

various neuroimaging modalities have appeared to acquire brain signals for developing a brain-computer interface (BCI). In this article, we review studies on different modalities including both invasive and non-invasive techniques for the implementation of BCIs, for brain signals detection, decoding, feature extraction, and classification. We discuss their advantages, disadvantages, and implementation issues to design of BCIs. Finally, we focus on fundamental principles, recent developments, and applications by using optical imaging as a promising modality for BCI applications.

The paper explores complex interactions between chemistry, mechanics and thermodynamic parameters involved in the water based PCBA cleaning process. current complexity of PCB assemblies, together with the needs to clean flux residues with the high grade of polymerization, due to higher soldering temperatures, requires a new approach in design of cleaning systems. A very detailed study of individual process parameters influence is necessary. Commonly used methods of the PCBA cleanliness testing-ionic contamination, chromatography, SIR and other are either unable to detect not dissolved residues under components, or are expensive in term of cost and time. A simple and fast method for determination of cleaning efficiency is introduced. It targets the first, most difficult and least monitored process phase - dissolving of flux residues - the cleaning step. It is based on optical evaluation of visible rest residues under low stand-off components on the precise standard test substrate with dedicated pattern of components. Evaluation can be done by visual checking, for more precise studies by means of modified AOI system. The special pattern was designed and made on a glass substrate with ceramic models of chips. Different possibilities of application of this test method are presented. This includes comparing of different fluxes- to cleaner matching, comparing different mechanical agitation efficiency in Spray-in-air and Spray- under-immersion processes, studying of influence of different process parameters on the cleaning result. Other application includes cleaning machine calibration and cleaning process capability studies. This method was already used in optimizing and diagnostics of cleaning equipment as well as in the design of new cleaning equipment. [1, 2, 3] © 2013 IMAPS.
