The paper explores complex interactions between chemistry, mechanics and thermodynamic parameters involved in the water based PCBA cleaning process. current complexity of PCB assemblies, together with the needs to clean flux residues with the high grade of polymerization, due to higher soldering temperatures, requires a new approach in design of cleaning systems. A very detailed study of individual process parameters influence is necessary. Commonly used methods of the PCBA cleanliness testing-ionic contamination, chromatography, SIR and other are either unable to detect not dissolved residues under components, or are expensive in term of cost and time. A simple and fast method for determination of cleaning efficiency is introduced. It targets the first, most difficult and least monitored process phase - dissolving of flux residues - the cleaning step. It is based on optical evaluation of visible rest residues under low stand-off components on the precise standard test substrate with dedicated pattern of components. Evaluation can be done by visual checking, for more precise studies by means of modified AOI system. The special pattern was designed and made on a glass substrate with ceramic models of chips. Different possibilities of application of this test method are presented. This includes comparing of different fluxes- to cleaner matching, comparing different mechanical agitation efficiency in Spray-in-air and Spray- under-immersion processes, studying of influence of different process parameters on the cleaning result. Other application includes cleaning machine calibration and cleaning process capability studies. This method was already used in optimizing and diagnostics of cleaning equipment as well as in the design of new cleaning equipment. [1, 2, 3] © 2013 IMAPS.

Semiconductor nanolasers provide an attractive route towards high density photonic integrated circuits in low power applications such as optical interconnects. In this paper we present the concept of a waveguide-coupled nanolaser for integration in a CMOS compatible photonic platform. We exploit metallic and dielectric confinement to provide high quality factors exceeding 500 in a wavelength-scale cavity, that provides efficient cooling and cross-talk immunity due to the metal coverage. We present simulations detailing the design considerations for high quality factors and efficient waveguide coupling. optical and electrical simulations predict room temperature operation at 1.55 μm with a threshold current of 120 μA and a differential quantum efficiency of 0.16. We also discuss briefly the challenges of fabricating these devices and integrating them in the photonic platform.

Advantages and recent developments of digital control have led to an increasing use of digital pulse width modulators. The resolution of the digital pulse width modulator determines the accuracy in the output current/voltage. So resolution has direct influence in the performance of the system. This paper presents three architectures to improve the resolution of the digital pulse width modulator. Among these two architectures are based on the DCM (Digital Clock Manager) block and the other one is based on the IODELAYE1(I/O Delay Element) available in the vIRTEX-6 FPGA. These architectures are designed, implemented and compared to analyze the performance.

We report on efforts to design high efficiency silicon sub-cells for use in multijunction stack devices. Both simulation and experimental work have been performed looking at a silicon solar cell under a truncated spectrum due to the optical filtering of the upper layers in the multijunction stack. The truncation for our case occurs for photon energies above 1.5 ev. Good agreement is seen between the modeling and experiments, with very different design features being identified, as compared to the design for a high efficiency solar cell under a full spectrum. When a well passivated front surface is achieved i.e. low interface recombination velocity, we see that a lightly-doped emitter profile maximizes the open circuit voltage (v_(oc)). When a high interface recombination is present, however, heavily-doped profiles exhibit the higher v_(oc) values. The impact on short circuit current (J_(sc)) is seen to be minimal even with large variations in the interface recombination and emitter profiles.

optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a widely used optical imaging technology [1]. current OCT systems contain a variety of fiber and free-space optical components, which add to the instrument size and cost. By utilizing a suitable mass-fabrication technology and a monolithic design, integrated optics can provide miniaturized OCT systems that offer dramatic cost and size reduction as well as more stable interferometric detection [2,3]. In this paper we present an important step toward a cheap, compact, and quasi-maintenance-free spectral-domain OCT (SD-OCT) system by integrating its central components, the beam splitter and spectrometer, on a silicon chip as schematically shown in Fig. 1A. An arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) [4] operating at a center wavelength of 1250 nm with a large free spectral range of 136 nm and a high wavelength resolution of 0.21 nm forms the integrated spectrometer, and a non-uniform adiabatic coupler [5] forms the beam splitter in our device. The coupler and AWG were fabricated in silicon oxynitride (SiON) [6]. Single-mode SiON channel waveguides with a 1.8-μm width, 1-μm height, 1.54 core refractive index, and 1.4485 cladding refractive index, enabling bending radii down to 0.5 mm, were fabricated.

Path Finding Robot or BEAM (Biological Electronic Aesthetic Mechanical) robot is an obstacle sensing robot, an application of embedded systems that changes its direction of motion when it senses the presence of obstacle in its path. It also acts as an Automatic Guided vehicle (industrial applications) to handle materials. The obstacle is sensed by means of an infra red sensor placed in front end of the robot. When the obstacle is sensed the stepper motor changes the direction of motion of the robot as per the program embedded in it. The path is pre programmed as we know where we use the robot, the change in direction of motion when the obstacle is sensed can also be preprogrammed. We used ATMEL microcontroller (ATMEL 89c51) for controlling the robot. A servo motor is used for the motion of the robot. [1][2][3]The speed of robot's movement can be adjusted by using an appropriate gear set. The robot can be used to transport materials in hazardous environment where it is difficult for human beings to carry that operation. This can be modified slightly and it can be used as a vehicle for aiding blind people. Technology is revolutionizing the medical field with the creation of robotic devices and complex imaging. Though these developments have made operations much less invasive, robotic systems have their own disadvantages that prevent them from replacing surgeons. Robotic surgery can be further divided into three subcategories depending on the degree of surgeon interaction during the procedure, supervisory-controlled, telesurgical, and shared-control.

We demonstrate a genetic method to fabricate large-area nano-structure III-v solar cells with conformal epitaxial growth on pre-patterned substrate. The design, simulation, fabrication, and characterization of a nano-structure gallium arsenide (GaAs) solar cell device are presented. The optical simulation illustrates that the nano-pyramid array is able to suppress the reflection and enhance the absorption in a wide spectrum range. The Iv characterization shows that the short circuit current of the nano-pyramid GaAs solar cell with 200 nm thick junction is as high as 18.5 mA/cm~2, which is more than triple of the planar cell. Our results suggest this nano-structure thin film absorber could significantly reduce epitaxial growth cost and increase yield, thus provides a pathway towards high-efficiency and low-cost solar cells.

The photovoltaic properties of 14 pairs In_(015)Ga_(0.85)N/GaN multiple quantum well solar cells with varying indium composition of QW are investigated numerically. The simulation results show that smooth well structure of energy band can be reduce carrier confinement and the recombination to enhance photo-current generation. This helpful design is easy to improve carrier transport to collection. And the optimal In_(0.15)Ga_(0.85)N/GaN MQW solar cell had v_(oc) of 2.37v, J_(sc) of 0.73, and the efficiency of 0.79%, which the efficiencies is enhanced 69.2 % to reference cell.
