The novel design of embedded InN dot-like structure within InGaN was useful as an absorption layer in photovoltaic (Pv) cells. We constructed the simulation model by employing the commercial software APSYS? and integrating the absorption coefficient of thin InN materials fabricated by metal organic vapor deposition (MOCvD). The model of simulating gradient Indium content of InGaN used as transition interface between InN and GaN was investigated. The results exhibit utilizing the effective variation of Indium content and suitable thickness to approach the optimal characteristic of hybrid InN/InGaN structure within solar cells shall be anticipated to enhance the performance of current nitride-based solar cells.

developments in automotive (particularly hybrid-electric vehicles), aerospace, and energy production industries have led to expanding research interest m integrated circuit (IC) design toward lugh-temperature applications. A high-voltage, high-temperature silicon-on-insulator (SOI) process allows for circuit design to expand into these extreme environment applications. Nearly all electronic devices require a reliable supply voltage capable of operating under various supply voltages and load currents. These supply voltages and load currents can be either DC or time-varying signals. In tins work, a stable supply voltage for embedded circuits is generated on chip via a voltage regulator producing a stable 5-v output voltage. Although applications of tins voltage regulator are not limited to gate driver circuits, tins regulator has been developed to meet the demands of a gate driver IC. The voltage regulator must be able to provide reliable output voltage over an input range from 10 v to 30 v. a temperature range of -25°C to 200°C. and output loads from 0 mA to 200 mA. Additionally, low power stand-by operation is provided to help reduce heat generation resulting in lower operating junction temperature. The designed voltage regulator has been successfully tested from -50°C to 200°C while demonstrating an output voltage variation of less than 10 mv under the frill range of input voltage. Additionally, line regulation tests from 10 v to 30 v show a 12-ppm/v supply sensitivity. Full temperature and input voltage range tests reveal that die no-load supply current draw is within 17 mA while still providing in excess of 200-mA load current upon demand. Modifications to the existing design or off-chip biasing can widen the range of attainable output voltages and drive capabilities.

Using geosynthetics in soft ground improvement is one of the main applications of geosynthetics. Firstly the recent developments on the methods for determining design parameters, and the methods for consolidation and deformation analyses in soft ground improvement using geosynthetics, especially prefabricated vertical drains (PvDs), are discussed. The current states of using electro-PvD(EPvD) and thermo-PvD(TPvD) in soft ground improvement are also reviewed. There are six (6) papers submitted to this session. The issues addressed by the papers are hybrid techniques for soft ground improvement;using suction induced by siphon to consolidate the soft clayey ground;deformation characteristics of PvD during consolidation process;a case history of an embankment on PvD improved subsoil and a case study of stabilizing a landslide using horizontal geosynthetic drains.

SWIR detection band benefits from natural (sun, night glow, thermal radiation) or artificial (eye safe lasers) photons sources combined to low atmospheric absorption and specific contrast compared to visible wavelengths. It gives the opportunity to address a large spectrum of applications such as defense and security (night vision, active imaging), space (earth observation), transport (automotive safety) or industry (non destructive process control). InGaAs material appears as a good candidate to satisfy SWIR detection needs. The lattice matching with InP constitutes a double advantage to this material: attractive production capacity and uncooled operation thanks to low dark current level induced by high quality material. For few years, III-vLab has been studying InGaAs imagery, gathering expertise in InGaAs material growth and imaging technology respectively from Alcatel-Lucent and Thales, its two mother companies. This work has lead to put quickly on the market a 320x256 InGaAs module, exhibiting high performances in terms of dark current, uniformity and quantum efficiency. In this paper, we present the last developments achieved in our laboratory, mainly focused on increasing the pixels number to vGA format associated to pixel pitch decrease (15μm) and broadening detection spectrum toward visible wavelengths. Depending on targeted applications, different Read Out Integrated Circuits (ROIC) have been used. Low noise ROIC have been developed by CEA LETI to fit the requirements of low light level imaging whereas logarithmic ROIC designed by NIT allows high dynamic imaging adapted for automotive safety. © 2012 SPIE.

Energy consumption and device footprint are major limiting factors in scaling current optical interconnect architectures to reach multi-terabit per second data transmission [1]. Hybrid integration of III-v on Si using a low-temperature O2 plasma-assisted wafer bonding technique [2] is an attractive platform for integrating active elements on Si in a low optical loss and high density manner. Further scaling on individual devices could enable hybrid photonic integrated circuits with complex functionality and low power consumption. A microring resonator is widely regarded as an ideal structure for very compact passive and active devices, e.g., recently demonstrated hybrid Si microring lasers [3]. Although microring structures are wavelength sensitive, they have several advantages viz. small size, resonance-enhanced efficiency and no intrinsic reflections. We propose a novel microring modulator design by incorporating a gain and a loss section in the same microring cavity. Separately biasing the two sections best uses the properties of a microring resonator. We compare this design with two other techniques that were previously employed on III-v-based electro-absorption (EA) microring modulators [4-5]. We also show the promise of the design in achieving high efficiency modulation with respect to some state of the art Si ring modulator results. © 2012 IEEE.

In areas of large ground movements, pipelines may be subjected to large longitudinal strains. It is imperative that strain-based design methods are developed to aid in the design and construction of such pipelines. As reported previously, a comprehensive experimental and numerical program to characterize the tensile strain capacity of welded pipelines was undertaken. Models were developed that are capable of predicting strain capacity based on input parameters such as pipe geometry and properties, internal pressure, weld flaw geometry, weld properties, and high-low misalignment. These models (equations) have been validated against a data base of about 50 full-scale pipe strain tests that included a broad range of geometries and pipe grades (X60-X80). In the current paper, further developments are described. A pressure factor has been incorporated into the models. Whereas the previous models assumed that the circumferential stress from internal pressure was 80% of the specified minimum yield strength (SMYS) of the pipe, the pressure factor allows the calculation of strain capacity as a function of pressure that results in hoop stresses from zero to 80% of SMYS. Additionally, ranges for pipe yield-to-tensile ratio and weld tearing resistance curves (R-curves) have been expanded. New equations and associated flaw assessment diagrams for example cases are provided. Copyright © 2012 by the International Society of Offshore and Polar Engineers (ISOPE).

This paper presents the design and implementation of a novel optical fiber temperature compensated relative humidity (RH) sensor device, based on fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) and developed specifically for monitoring water ingress leading to the deterioration of building stone. The performance of the sensor thus created, together with that of conventional sensors, was first assessed in the laboratory where they were characterized under experimental conditions of controlled wetting and drying cycles of limestone blocks, before being employed "in-the-field" to monitor actual building stone in a specially built wall. Although a new construction, this was built specifically using conservation methods similar to those employed in past centuries, to allow an accurate simulation of processes occurring with wetting and drying in the historic walls in the University of Oxford. © 2001-2012 IEEE.

Status and developments of BL13-XALOC, the macromolecular crystallography beamline at Alba

BL13-XALOC is a Macromolecular Crystallography beamline at the newly built 3-Gev synchrotron ALBA (Barcelona). The optics design is based on an in-vacuum undulator, a Si(111) channel-cut crystal monochromator, and a pair of KB mirrors. The optical design allows three main operation modes: an unfocused configuration, where one or both mirrors are removed from the photon beam path; a focused configuration, where both mirrors can focus the beam to 49×9 μm2 FWHM (H×v), and a defocused configuration that can match the size of the beam to the dimensions of the crystals or to focus it at the detector. To achieve a uniform defocused beam, the slope errors were reduced by using novel method together with our high-accuracy metrology laboratory. Thorough commissioning has also demonstrated that the X-ray beam has excellent energy and spatial stability. The End Station includes a high accuracy single axis diffractometer, a removable mini-kappa goniometer, an automated sample mounting robot and a Pilatus6M, photon-counting detector. This equipment, together with the operation flexibility, allows the beamline to tackle a large variety of crystals, from medium sized crystals with large unit cell parameters to microcrystals. Several examples of high-quality data collections measured during beamline commissioning are described. The beamline started user operation on 18th July 2012.

This paper presents selected issues on compatibility and integrity of geomembranes and geosynthetic clay liners (GCLs) among the recent challenges related to developments and applications of geosynthetics for environmental protection such as landfill engineering. They include (1) chemical compatibility of GCLs against waste leachate, (2) compatibility of geomembrane above clay-based landfill covers subjected to differential settlements, (3) influence of geogrid as a reinforcement layer within clay-based landfill covers, (4) application of geosynthetic materials applied to coastal waste landfills, and (5) possible application of geosynthetic barriers for environmental protection due to catastrophic disasters. First, we discuss the results of GCLs, of either natural or chemical resistant bentonites, that were subjected to hydraulic conductivity tests under non-prehydrated and prehydrated conditions using various types of chemical solutions and waste leachate. Heterogeneity is an important aspect that should be taken into account to discuss the hydraulic barrier performance, particularly when prehydration prior to the permeation of waste leachate is expected. Secondly, influence of geomembrane and geogrid reinforcement layer on the deformation behaviour clay-based landfill covers studied through centrifuge model tests is discussed. Thirdly, application of geomembranes in coastal landfills is reviewed. design considerations include actions of wave and tide and stability of base ground. Several case histories implemented in Japan are introduced. Lastly, the current situation regarding the geo-environmental issues caused by the 2011 East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami, including environmental contamination by nuclides, is briefly described to mention the possibility of application of geosynthetic barriers for recovery works against catastrophic disasters.

Ti-6Al-4v, C and TiB2 powders (71.5%Ti-6Al-4v+ 26.2%TiB2+2.3%C in wt. %) were prepasted and then laser clad on Ti-6Al-4v substrates. Laser cladding was carried out with a Nd:YAG pulse laser with the parameters of defocus length 15mm, pulse frequency 15Hz, scanning speed 2-4mm/s, electric current 200-240A. Microstructure and phases were analyzed with the optical Microscopy(OM), Scanning Electron Microscopy(SEM) and X-Ray Diffraction(XRD). Laser cladding layers with smooth surfaces, good metallurgical bonding with no cracks and pores were formed. The average thickness of the coatings is approximately 80 mu m. Reactions among Ti, C and TiB2 in the laser molten pool cause in-situ synthesis of TiB, TiB2 and TiC reinforcements. The average microhardness is 836Hv, which is more than twice that of the Ti-6Al-4v substrate (320Hv). Friction coefficients of the cladding coatings fluctuate between 0.26-0.3. Laser cladding specimen with powder mixture of 71.5%Ti-6Al-4v+ 26.2%TiB2+2.3%C (weight loss 0.0007g after sliding 245m) possesses better wear property than that of the specimen with powder mixture of 90%Ti-6Al-4v+ 10%B4C (weight loss 0.0068g).
