This paper surveys the recent developments and future research opportunities in computer supported cooperative work in design. This domain of interest has been variously conceptualized and described in different publications. There is a broader interpretation that considers the entirety of product lifecycle as a target domain and aims at a holistic optimization of all related engineering processes by connecting them through design. There exists a narrower interpretation that concentrates on the enhancement of the product conceptualization and creative design activities in distributed, multidisciplinary and volatile environments. The former is most frequently referred to as collaborative engineering and the latter as collaborative design. The paper concentrates on collaborative design and investigates the concepts, advancements and issues from: (i) philosophical and theoretical, (ii) technological and infrastructural, (iii) organizational and methodological, (iv) social and cultural, (v) cognitive and behavioral perspectives. Based on literature sources and the own work of the author in the last three decades, it provides a broadly-based analysis of the related concepts, knowledge, means, systems and concerns in current research, development and application with the objective to point towards future progression opportunities. The paper identifies a gradual shift in the research interest from the technological and procedural aspects to the socio-cultural, inter-personal and informational aspects. It proposes that collaborative design is eventually about people and that mobile, ubiquitous and smart technologies create many new opportunities for conducting collaborative design. Semantics, pragmatics and apobetics of inter-personal interaction and communication play a key role in the success of collaborative design.

CdTe based solar cells have been well-recognized to be the most successful thin Pv cells with their current industrial production. However, the needed improvement in output efficiency of these cells is constrained by major issues such the poor understanding of the ternary CdS x Te 1-x interlayer, formed at the CdS-CdTe interface. While it is believed to have both beneficial and negative effects on the cell performance, its exact mechanism and extent are not fully explored. In this work, the AMPS-1D software was deployed to model this interlayer, using several of its variables such as variable material properties, thickness, bandgap as well as the thickness of the bounding CdS layer. Results show that the interlayer thickness reduces cell performance, through Jsc, voc, FF and J-v curves, with best efficiencies of 17.892% (Jsc=27.043mA/cm 2 , voc=0.871v, FF=0.8) obtained at zero thickness, falling down by nearly 20% at CdS x Te 1-x thickness of 100nm. As the bandgap is varied, maximum cell performance of 17.85% (Jsc=27.76A/cm 2 , voc=0.91v and FF=0.81) was found at 1.7ev. Similarly, increasing CdS thickness also reduces cell performance, by reducing the quantum efficiency. The results indicate that if the CdS x Te 1-x layer has a thickness of up to 100nm, and a bandgap of around 1.7ev, then cell efficiencies of around 18% are feasible even for ultra thin CdTe layers of 1μm.

Energy consumption and device footprint are major limiting factors in scaling current optical interconnect architectures to reach multi-terabit per second data transmission. Hybrid integration of III-v on Si using a low-temperature O 2 plasma-assisted wafer bonding technique is an attractive platform for integrating active elements on Si in a low optical loss and high density manner. Further scaling on individual devices could enable hybrid photonic integrated circuits with complex functionality and low power consumption. A microring resonator is widely regarded as an ideal structure for very compact passive and active devices, e.g., recently demonstrated hybrid Si microring lasers [3]. Although microring structures are wavelength sensitive, they have several advantages viz. small size, resonance-enhanced efficiency and no intrinsic reflections. We propose a novel microring modulator design by incorporating a gain and a loss section in the same microring cavity. Separately biasing the two sections best uses the properties of a microring resonator. We compare this design with two other techniques that were previously employed on III-v-based electro-absorption (EA) microring modulators. We also show the promise of the design in achieving high efficiency modulation with respect to some state of the art Si ring modulator results.

The Qezelozan-Sefidrood Watershed is a transboundary watershed in Iran, shared by eight provinces. Recent development plans in the upstream provinces include several dams that are either under construction or at the study stage. Implementation of these plans will negatively impact the downstream provinces, which historically have had access to the river. The situation can be exacerbated by the expected climate change impacts on the basin. This study evaluates the possible impacts of upstream development plans and climate change on the natural flow of the Qezelozan-Sefidrood River and designs a reasonable mechanism for fair allocation of streamflow to the riparian parties. First, a watershed model is developed using the Water Evaluation and Planning System (WEAP) software. This model is run for current water allocation and various development and climate change scenarios. The results indicate that the downstream provinces have a high vulnerability to the expected climate and development changes in the basin. To reduce the potential tension, the study treats the problem as a "bankruptcy problem" and applies the Adjusted Proportional rule to fairly allocate the available resource (water) to the creditors (conflict parties).

Recent developments in the area of Positron Emission Tomography (PET) detectors using Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPMs) have demonstrated the feasibility of higher resolution PET scanners due to a significant reduction in the detector form factor. The increased detector density requires a proportionally larger number of channels to interface the SiPM array with the backend digital signal processing necessary for eventual image reconstruction. This work presents a CMOS ASIC design for signal reducing readout electronics in support of an 8x8 silicon photomultiplier array. The row/column/diagonal summation circuit significantly reduces the number of required channels, reducing the cost of subsequent digitizing electronics. current amplifiers are used with a single input from each SiPM cathode. This approach helps to reduce the detector loading, while generating all the necessary row, column and diagonal addressing information. In addition, the single current amplifier used in our Pulse-Positioning architecture facilitates the extraction of pulse timing information. Other components under design at present include a current-mode comparator which enables threshold detection for dark noise current reduction, a transimpedance amplifier and a variable output impedance I/O driver which adapts to a wide range of loading conditions between the ASIC and lines with the off-chip Analog-to-Digital Converters (ADCs).

Recent advances in DNA sequencing techniques require the development of high NA immersion microscope systems with large field-of-view, increased resolution and very tight distortion correction. This paper discusses the optical design and tolerance analysis of a NA 1.0 immersion microscope system with a field of view over 1 mm, which is to be used for four-color fluorescence spectroscopy. The microscope system includes an immersion objective lens and four tube lenses, and is corrected for a wide wavelength range from 490 nm to 712 nm. We will discuss critical aspects of designing this kind of optical system, including special glass selection required for chromatic correction.

Making a lens design working at cryogenic temperature is a real challenge. Both optical and mechanical designer must work together to prevent problems during operation. The Gemini Planet Imager (GPI), currently under construction will be a facility instrument for the 8-m Gemini South telescope. The science instrument is a cryogenic integral field spectrograph based on a lenslet array. The integral field nature of the instrument allows for a full mapping of the focal plane at coarse spectral resolution. With such a data cube, artifacts within the PSF such as residual speckles can be suppressed. Additionally, the initial detection of any candidate planet will include spectral information that can be used to distinguish it from a background object: candidates can be followed up with detailed spectroscopic observations. The optics between the lenslet array and the detector are essentially a standard spectrograph with a collimating set of lenses, a dispersive prism and a camera set of lenses in a folded assembly. This paper describes the process from the first preliminary design to the final cryogenic system for both optical and mechanical design to achieve cryogenic working solution. We also discussed the assembly procedure (room temperature vs cryogenic compensation), the test support equipments and finally the laboratory optical performances over the field of view.

In this work, two SMS algorithms are presented for an objective design with different selected ray-bundles: three meridian ray-bundles (3M) and one meridian and two skew ray-bundles (1M-2S), the latter from pin hole point of view, provides a better sampling of the phase space. The emerging paradigm of imaging systems, known as wavefront coding, which employs joint optimization of both the optical system and the digital post-processing system, has not only increased the degrees of design freedom but also brought several significant system-level benefits. The effectiveness of wavefront coding has been demonstrated by several proof-of-concept systems in the reduction of focus-related aberrations and extension of depth of focus. While previous research on wavefront coding was mainly targeted at imaging systems having a small or modest field of view (FOv), we present a preliminary study on wavefront coding applied to panoramic optical systems. Unlike traditional wavefront coding systems, which only require the constancy of the modulation transfer function (MTF) over an extended focus range, wavefront-coded panoramic systems particularly emphasize the mitigation of significant off-axis aberrations such as field curvature, coma, and astigmatism. The restrictions of using a traditional generalized cubic polynomial pupil phase mask for wide angle systems are studied in this paper. It is shown that a traditional approach can be used when the variation of the off-axis aberrations remains modest. Consequently, we propose to study how a distributed wavefront coding approach, where two surfaces are used for encoding the wavefront, can be applied to wide angle lenses. A few cases designed using Zemax are presented and discussed

In the paper, we design a focal adjustable flashlight, which can provide the spotlight and the wide-angle illumination in different modes. For most users, they two request two illumination modes. In such two modes, one is high density energy of the light pattern and the other is the uniform light pattern in a wide view field. In designing the focal adjustable flashlight, we first build a precise optical model for the high-power LED produced by CREE Inc. in mid-field verification to make sure the accuracy of our simulation. Typically, the lens is useful to be the key component of the adjustable flashlight, but the optical efficiency is low. Here, we introduce a concept of so-called total internal refraction (TIR) lens into the design of flashlight. By defocusing the TIR lens, the flashlight can quickly change the beam size and energy density to various applications. We design two segments of the side of the TIR lens so that they can be applied to the two modes, and the flashlight provides a high optical efficiency for each mode. The illuminance of the center of light pattern at a distance of 2 m from the lamp is also higher than using the lens in the spotlight and wide-angle illumination. It provides good lighting functions for users.
