Progressive addition lenses (PAL) are used to compensate presbyopia, which is induced by losing accommodation of elder eyes. These eyes need different optical power provided by eye glasses while watching objects at different distance. A smaller optical power is required in further distance and a larger one in nearer zone. A progressive addition lens can provides different power requirements in one piece of lens. This paper introduces a whole process of PAL production, from design, fabrication, to measurement. The PAL is designed by optimizing NURBS surface. Parameters of merit function are adjusted to design lenses with different specifications. The simulation results confirm that the power distributes as expected and cylinders are controlled under an acceptable level. Besides, sample lenses have been produced by injecting polycorbonate to the molds. Finally, Ultra Accuracy 3D Profilemeter is used to measure the sample PALs. Practical examinations shows that our designs are achievable and feasible in practice use.

In this paper, we proposed a new configuration of concentrator in solar Pv system. A special optical system in the concentrator used in focusing sun light to solar cell is proposed, the system compose of an aspherical surface and a specific diffusing surface. The uniform-squared light pattern is obtained on the solar cell, the shape and size of light pattern can be modulated by the parameters of the diffusing surface. In order to decrease the weight of the lens, the concentrator in Fresnel lens type is built at last. Besides, the optical efficiencies formed by the aspherical concentrator and Fresnel concentrator are about 92% and 77%, the concentrations are about 720mW/mm(2) and 640mW/mm(2), and the acceptance angles are about 0.35 degrees and 0.30 degrees, respectively. The tolerances in assembling the component of the concentrator are also discussed in detail.

A free-form lens system design is proposed for short distance projection. Free-form surface shape and non-rotational symmetrical structure provide us more freedoms for optimization. The catadioptric structure is also used to reduce the overall length of the whole system. The designed projector lens system consists of two parts. The first part is a rotationally symmetrical lens system which corrects the basic aberrations. The second part contains a free-form lens and a reflector which correct the distortion and other aberrations. We achieve 55inch projected image size at a display screen which is 300mm away from the lens system. The maximum distortion for all fields at all distances is less than 3%.

Many areas of wireless technology applicable to industrial scenarios have advanced in recent years. The expansion of wireless technology into short-range/low-power uses, advances in fabrication technologies, and the drive of consumer device markets toward complete tether-free products, all serve to steer the trends in particular directions. By the two-fiber way to power for the probe in high voltage side and convey the pulse signal, the Rogowski coil photoelectric current transformer is constructed, solving the problem of electrical insulation between high and low voltage sides. The photoelectric conversion efficiency of optical fiber power supply may reach 50%, which can meet the demand of electricity utilization steadily. The digital signal processing method of v/F conversion makes the signal transmission has a strong anti-interference ability, and the experimental results show that this method for maximum error is 2 parts per thousand in the input range of 0 similar to 50A. Single-junction GaAs solar cells have been studied extensively recently, and have reached over 28% efficiency. Further improvement requires an optically thick but physically thin absorbing layer to provide not only high open-circuit voltage but also large short-circuit current. This paper studies various optical designs, such as light scattering and reflection at various surfaces. It is concluded that thin GaAs solar cells with hundreds of nanometers thickness and the combination of textured surfaces and reflective back surfaces can potentially offer efficiencies greater than 30% under one sun AM1.5G solar spectrum. A practical approach is proposed to realize these structures by roughening a lattice-matched ZnSe layer grown on the device. The achievable efficiencies of all these structures are discussed.

This paper presents the design and measurement results of two avalanche photodiode structures (APDs) and a novel frequency-mixing transimpedance amplifier (TIA), which are key building blocks towards a monolithically integrated optical sensor front end for near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy applications. Two different APD structures are fabricated in an unmodified 0.18 mu m CMOS process, one with a shallow trench isolation (STI) guard ring and the other with a P-well guard ring. The APDs are characterized in linear mode. The STI bounded APD demonstrates better performance and exhibits 3.78 A/W responsivity at a wavelength of 690 nm and bias voltage of 10.55 v. The frequency-mixing TIA (FM-TIA) employs a T-feedback network incorporating gate-controlled transistors for resistance modulation, enabling the simultaneous down-conversion and amplification of the high frequency modulated photodiode (PD) current. The TIA achieves 92 d B Omega conversion gain with 0.5 v modulating voltage. The measured IIP3 is 10.6 mu A. The amplifier together with the 50 Omega output buffer draws 23 mA from a 1.8 v power supply.

To simulate solar radiation at the earth's surface, a new economical multiple-lamp solar simulator was designed. The solar simulator is comprised of 188 reflector sunlight dysprosium lamps whose light spectrum is very similar to air mass 1.5 (AM1.5) solar spectrum terrestrial standards. Lamps are configured in a hexagonal pattern with 15 columns of 12 or 13 lamps at a lamp-to-lamp spacing and column-to-column spacing of 295mm. Without altering the radiation spectral distribution, the average irradiance on target irradiated area can be adjusted over a wide range between 150 and 1100W/m(2) by means of the variation of lamps number or/and lamp-to-irradiated area distance. At the height of 2.0m the solar simulator provides 2mx1.5m irradiated area with over 1000 W/m(2). Measurement of irradiance indicates that the multiple-lamp simulator conforms to Class B of ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) Standard (ASTM E927-2005) in regard to spectrum match, irradiance uniformity and stability. To enlarge the effective irradiated area, two large mirror-like stainless steel plates was mounted on both of the long sides of the solar simulator. The radiation characteristics of simulator are improved and the optimized effectively irradiation surface is expanded up to 81.6%.

Almost every aspect concerning the design of modern panoramic lenses brings new challenges to optical designers. Examples of these include ray tracing programs having problems finding the entrance pupil which is moving through the field of view, production particularities due to the shape of the front lenses, ways of tolerancing these systems having strong distortion, particular setups required for their characterization and calibration, and algorithms to properly analyze and make use of the obtained images. To better understand these modern panoramic lenses, the optical engineering Research Laboratory at Laval University has been doing research on them during the past few years. The most significant results are being presented in this paper. Controlled distortion, as in commercial panomorph lenses (Immervision), is used to image a specific part of the object with more pixels than in a normal fisheye lens. This idea is even more useful when a zone of interest vary in time with dynamically adjustable distortion as in a panoramic locally magnifying imager. Another axis of research is the use of modern computational techniques such as wavefront coding in wide-angle imaging systems. The particularities of such techniques when the field of view is large or with anamorphic imagers are considered. Presentation of a novel circular test bench in our laboratories, required to calibrate and check the image quality of wide-angle imaging system, follows. Another presented setup uses a laser and diffractive optical elements to compactly calibrate wide-angle lenses. Then, a discussion of the uniqueness in tolerancing these lenses, especially the front elements due to the large ratio between lens diameter and entrance pupil diameter, is included. Lastly, particularities with polarization imaging and experiments of triangle orientation detection tests before and after unwrapping the distorted images are briefly discussed.
