For several years Sagem has invested in technologies and engineering to develop innovative solutions for collecting optics for LPP and DPP EUv sources. Among the technological challenges for collecting mirrors, thermal control plays a very important role in avoiding degradation of in band EUv reflectivity and maintaining far field optical performance during scanner operation. Sagem proposes solutions based on a metallic mirror with embedded cooling circuits to stabilize the temperature of the mirror during source operation. Results of simulation as well as first technology validations obtained on prototypes will be shown to demonstrate the performance of the cooled mirror design. Another critical performance about the collector is the HSFR (micro roughness) requirements of the optical surface for limiting scattering and optimizing the in band EUv reflectivity. Thanks to the specific polishing process, HSFR values of below 2 Angstroms have been achieved on demonstrator metallic mirrors with high departure aspheres. Reflectivity measurements performed after coating of these parts with MoSi multilayers confirm that the obtained polishing quality is compliant with polishing specifications for high performance EUv optics. Finally, upcoming developments at Sagem in the field of EUv collecting optics will be presented.

The present paper provides, for the first time, a design strategy for the achievement of room-temperature operation of electrically-injected metal-clad nano-spin vCSELs. The practical realization of such devices would represent the first application of the combined capabilities of three key technologies : plasmonics, spintronics and nano-technology. Rather subtle waveguiding effects arise in plasmonic lasers including the opportunity to significantly enhance the optical confinement factor. Exploitation of spintronic effects can enable reductions of up to 50 % in the lasing threshold current. The utilization of nanocavities gives access to Purcell- enhanced spontaneous emission for laser threshold reduction and, potentially, threshold-less lasing. © 2011 IEEE.

This paper is an introduction to the research and training activities carried out under the Euratom 7th Framework Programme (FP7, 2007-2011) in the field of nuclear fission science and technology, covering in particular nuclear systems and safety, and including innovative reactor systems and partitioning and transmutation. It is based on the more than 40 invited lectures that were delivered by Euratom project coordinators and keynote speakers at the FISA-2009 conference (FISA, 2009), organised by the European Commission DG Research, 22-24 June 2009, Prague, Czech Republic. The Euratom programme must be considered in the context of current and future nuclear technology and the respective research effort: Generation-II (i.e. yesterday, NPP construction 1970-2000): safety and reliability of nuclear facilities and energy independence in order to ensure security of supply worldwide;Generation-III (i.e. today, construction 2000-2040+): continuous improvement of safety and reliability, and increased industrial competitiveness in a growing energy market;Generation-Iv (i.e. tomorrow, construction from 2040) for increased sustainability though optimal utilisation of natural resources and waste minimisation, and increased proliferation resistance. Consequently, the focus of the lectures devoted to Generation-II and -III is on the major scientific challenges and technological developments needed to guarantee safety and reliability, in particular issues associated with plant lifetime extension and operation. The focus of the lectures devoted to Generation-Iv is on the design objectives and associated research issues that have been agreed upon internationally, in particular the ambitious criteria and technology goals established at the international level by the Generation-Iv International Forum (GIF). In the future, electricity must continue to be produced competitively, and in addition high temperature process heat may also be required, while exploiting a maximum of fissile and

We describe a simple swept-laser design that characterizes the emission bandwidth, linewidth, spectral shape and output noise. A short cavity Littmann configuration is used in which the semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) lasing wavelength is tuned by a galvanometer with an 830 grooves per mm diffraction grating. A 3dB coupler extracts light from the cavity formed by the grating and end-mirror and the optical output uses to illuminate a balanced swept source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) interferometer incorporating a circulator, 3dB coupler, dispersion compensator and balanced detector. The SOA (SOA-1200-70-PM-20sB, Innolume GmbH) uses a novel III-v semiconductor quantum-dot gain medium. ASE is emitted between 1150nm and 1300nm at a drive current of 700mA. When used in the Littmann cavity laser a coherence length of about 10mm is produced, which is tunable over 60nm. The peak output power is 12mW. The swept-laser has been incorporated into a fiber-based SS-OCT system and used to image biological tissues. Axial resolution in air is 12 microns. Images of human palmar skin in-vivo are demonstrated, showing good resolution and contrast, with the stratum corneum, epidermis, rete ridges and epidermal-dermal junction visualized. © 2011 SPIE-OSA.

We report electrical properties and optical Emission Spectrum of DC-Driven Microplasma Reactor for Scanning Plasma Etching in pure SF6 environment with different device size between 5-12 kPa gas pressures. The Microplasma Reactor is consists of metal-insulator-metal sandwich structure, and with an inverted pyramidal shape hollow cathode. A diagnostic system is design to measure the v-I curve and OES (optical emission spectrum) of the microplasma. The result shows that the discharge current is increased with the gas pressure and applied voltage, the density of the active silicon etchant F atom emission spectrum line is increased with the decrease of the device size. These results confirm that the Microplasma Reactor is suitable for Scanning Plasma Etching of silicon. © 2011 IEEE.

In this paper, we report on current developments aimed at improving the focusability of the Texas Petawatt Laser. Two major campaigns have been commissioned that address the issue of focusability. First, we implemented a closed loop, 32 actuator bi-moprh deformable mirror (DFM) to compensate for aberrations in the optical train and second, a color corrector lens assembly was installed that compensates for chromatic errors accumulated in broadband (>15 nm), large aperture (> 20 cm) laser systems. We will present in detail, pre and post correction results with the DFM and describe challenges faced when one activates a single shot, high energy closed loop system. Secondly, we will provide modeling and experimental results of our color correction system. This is a novel approach to a problem only seen in high energy, broadband, large aperture laser pulses. By using color correction optics we have demonstrated a 6X increase in focal intensity. With the installation of the DFM, the rms wavefront error in the system was reduced from 2.4 waves to. 131 waves, further increasing intensities seen at focus by 1 order of magnitude.

Computational electromagnetics has become a real cornerstone in the design of microwave and millimeter wave components and systems. One of the major computational techniques used in these designs is to solve integral equations with the Method of Moments (MoM). Traditionally, MoM has been used extensively for antennas, transmission lines, filters, couplers, etc., mainly in the MHz and GHz range. However, MoM can also be applied at much higher frequencies. It will be shown that at these frequencies, this computational technique is just emerging. One of the reasons is that there are serious differences with the classical implementations, which prohibits the direct use of the well-known commercially available MoM solvers. For example, one of the differences is the fact that the concept of a surface current, confined to a very thin layer at the surface of a conductor, is not valid any more. In this presentation, the different computational techniques will be reviewed and compared, not only in the traditional microwave and millimeter wave range, but especially at THz, IR, and optical frequencies. In concreto, the MAGMAS MoM solver will be compared to a numerical FDTD solver well-known in the plasmonics research community: Lumerical. It will be shown that also at these very high frequencies, MoM has its proper place in the pallet of computational algorithms. © 2011 IEEE.

This paper presents an improved two-stage dynamic comparator using a bulk voltage trimming technique for offset calibration. The comparator requires only a one-phase clock while exerting no extra load on the first stage, leading to higher operating speed. The calibration does not require any extra power supply and does not consume any quiescent current, while increasing the offset calibrating range by a factor of 2 over previous techniques. Detailed analysis of the method of calibrating both stages of the dynamic comparator is provided. Simulation results in a 65nm digital CMOS process show that the comparator is capable of working at a speed of 5GHz with 90uW of power consumption from a 1v power supply, achieving an input-referred offset calibrating range of ±35mv at ∼±2.3mv/step at the typical-typical process corner. © 2011 IEEE.

At the Institute of Microstructure Technology (IMT) at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), refractive X-ray optics are developed. These optics are proposed to be used as condenser optics in X-Ray spectroscopy and microscopy applications with an X-ray tube as a source. To produce the lenses, a thin structured foil with equidistant fins in triangular form is casted from a structured silicon wafer. The foil is then wound around a glass fibre core. Due to this fabrication method, it is possible to produce large-aperture lenses with low absorption in comparison to other types of refractive X-Ray optics, like X-Ray lenses with continuous parabolic shape or prism lenses. The first are limited due to their absorption while the latter are limited due to their mechanical stability of the prism columns. The optimisation of the so called X-Ray rolled prism lenses (RXPL) is underway at the institute and involves several parameters. One important property of the lenses is the correct form of the wound foil layers. This determines the number of necessary refractive elements at a given radius, which in turn determines the refracted slope and focal position of the transmitted beam. The spatial extent of the x-ray source is also being accounted for in the lens design. Another important point is the diameter of the winding core, which should be as small as possible due to the fact that the winding core reduces the active area of the lens. The rolling process itself is also revised to produce lenses with the above-mentioned small diameter winding cores and bend foil layers while sustaining a tight- fitting foil bundle. The lenses are studied at different energies and types of X-Ray tubes, as well as synchrotron sources, to gain additional information of the internal structure of the lens after the winding process. In this paper the current status of the lens development and results at X-Ray tube sources for use in diffractometers is presented.

Imaging of cortical vasculature in rodents and its dynamic response to experimental conditions, yield valuable information regarding the underlying physiological mechanisms of neuronal activity. Laser Speckle Contrast Imaging (LSCI) facilitates both enhanced micro-vessel visualization and blood flow information. The current state of equipment used: the imaging systems, the external lighting as well as the recording apparatus constrain modern imaging to bench-top experiments with anaesthetized rodents. We describe an imaging system that attempts to shift this paradigm to be capable of imaging awake and behaving rodents in a completely unrestrained manner. To this end, we present a novel integrated optics microscope weighting 7 g and occupying less than 4 cc, coupled with a backpack system weighting 22 g and measuring 2.5x4x2 cm(3). The system is capable of providing controlled laser illumination, optimized speckle image formation in 670 nm-850 nm range with a 1 mm depth of field, image acquisition and data recording as a single system. We present details of system development and provide preliminary results from an anaesthetized rat model.
