Computational electromagnetics has become a real cornerstone in the design of microwave and millimeter wave components and systems. One of the major computational techniques used in these designs is to solve integral equations with the Method of Moments (MoM). Traditionally, MoM has been used extensively for antennas, transmission lines, filters, couplers, etc., mainly in the MHz and GHz range. However, MoM can also be applied at much higher frequencies. It will be shown that at these frequencies, this computational technique is just emerging. One of the reasons is that there are serious differences with the classical implementations, which prohibits the direct use of the well-known commercially available MoM solvers. For example, one of the differences is the fact that the concept of a surface current, confined to a very thin layer at the surface of a conductor, is not valid any more. In this presentation, the different computational techniques will be reviewed and compared, not only in the traditional microwave and millimeter wave range, but especially at THz, IR, and optical frequencies. In concreto, the MAGMAS MoM solver will be compared to a numerical FDTD solver well-known in the plasmonics research community: Lumerical. It will be shown that also at these very high frequencies, MoM has its proper place in the pallet of computational algorithms.

Age-related ailments like presbyopia and cataract are increasing concerns in the aging society. Both go along with a loss of ability to accommodate. A new approach to restore the patients' ability to accommodate is the Artificial Accommodation System. This micro mechatronic system will be implanted into the capsular bag to replace the human crystalline lens. Depending on the patients' actual need for accommodation, the Artificial Accommodation System autonomously adapts the refractive power of its integrated optical element in a way that the projection on the patients' retina results in a sharp image. As the Artificial Accommodation System is an active implant, its subsystems have to be supplied with electrical energy. Evolving technologies, like energy harvesting, which can potentially be used to power an implant like the Artificial Accommodation System are at the current state of art not sufficient to power the Artificial Accommodation System autonomously [1]. In the near future, therefore an inductive power supply system will be developed which includes an energy storage to power the Artificial Accommodation System autonomously over a period of 24 h and can be recharged wirelessly. This Paper describes a new possibility to optimize the secondary coil design in a solely analytical way, based on a new figure of merit. Within this paper the developed figure of merit is applied to optimize the secondary coil design for the Artificial Accommodation System.

In a similar manner to the dilute nitrides, the incorporation of Bismuth in semiconductors such as GaAs is predicted to lead to a band-anti-crossing effect (in the valence band) causing a large band gap bowing. In addition, the large size of Bismuth atoms gives rise to a large spin-orbit splitting. This opens-up interesting new possibilities for efficient photonic devices, such as near- and mid-infrared lasers which are more thermally stable and less susceptible to losses compared to conventional InP-based devices. Since Bismuth principally influences the valence band, while nitrogen influences the conduction band, combining Bismuth and Nitrogen in III-v alloys offers huge potential for engineering the conduction and valence band offsets, the band gap and spin-orbit splitting, with wide scope for the design of photonic devices.

This paper develops a light emitting diode (LED) driver circuit with a buck-boost converter. The forward bias of the LED used was 3.1v~4.3v, and the forward current was 0.7A. Twelve 3W white-light LEDs were driven in series in the proposed circuit. Each LED was operated at 4v and 0.6A using ac 110v that was rectified by a bridge rectifier. It is operated in continuous buck-boost mode and the results are then simulated using IsSpice software. In an LED only 15% to 25% of electrical energy is converted into light; the rest is converted into heat, which increases its temperature. The resistance of an LED varies with temperature, making the circuit unstable. Therefore, a closed-loop voltage control system is used in this paper to increase output voltage stability. The circuit scheme and operation mode will first be explained. Then, the transfer function for calculating the shortest regulation time is derived using the state-space averaging method. MATLAB is applied to execute the whole circuit simulations. Finally, experimental results demonstrate that the power factor of the closed-loop buck-boost converter is 0.998 and the output voltage of the designed controller can be stably maintained at 48v.

We report electrical properties and optical Emission Spectrum of DC-Driven Microplasma Reactor for Scanning Plasma Etching in pure SF 6 environment with different device size between 5-12 kPa gas pressures. The Microplasma Reactor is consists of metal-insulator-metal sandwich structure, and with an inverted pyramidal shape hollow cathode. A diagnostic system is design to measure the v-I curve and OES (optical emission spectrum) of the microplasma. The result shows that the discharge current is increased with the gas pressure and applied voltage, the density of the active silicon etchant F atom emission spectrum line is increased with the decrease of the device size. These results confirm that the Microplasma Reactor is suitable for Scanning Plasma Etching of silicon.

Imaging of cortical vasculature in rodents and its dynamic response to experimental conditions, yield valuable information regarding the underlying physiological mechanisms of neuronal activity. Laser Speckle Contrast Imaging (LSCI) facilitates both enhanced micro-vessel visualization and blood flow information. The current state of equipment used: the imaging systems, the external lighting as well as the recording apparatus constrain modern imaging to bench-top experiments with anaesthetized rodents. We describe an imaging system that attempts to shift this paradigm to be capable of imaging awake and behaving rodents in a completely unrestrained manner. To this end, we present a novel integrated optics microscope weighting 7 g and occupying less than 4 cc, coupled with a backpack system weighting 22 g and measuring 2.5×4×2 cm 3 . The system is capable of providing controlled laser illumination, optimized speckle image formation in 670 nm - 850 nm range with a 1 mm depth of field, image acquisition and data recording as a single system. We present details of system development and provide preliminary results from an anaesthetized rat model.

The Fine Guidance Sensor (FGS) is part of the science instrumentation for the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). The FGS is required to operate at 37 K and provide the data needed to facilitate fine pointing and attitude stabilization necessary to meet the requirements of the mission's science and engineering operations. We describe here the selection of the proper optical design form to meet requirements and its relative merits. The FGS has progressed with the successful completion of several key design reviews. The optical design of the current stage will be discussed here in detail.

Although several applications of machine vision and biomedical imaging ask for the close-up imaging of extended object fields, only few, mostly bulky solutions exist. We demonstrate the optical design and realization of an ultra-compact close-up imaging system with unity magnification. It uses a multi-aperture approach in order to shorten its total track length to less than 4 mm while achieving a large field of view. The system is made of a stack of several two-dimensional arrays of refractive microlenses. The potential of this setup lies in the combination of digital imaging with microoptical fabrication techniques leading to thin optical components which can be directly attached to an image sensor. Hence, these systems fit into tight spaces and they achieve a high resolution without scanning.

Panoramic imaging is of growing importance in many applications around the world spurred by the development of digital imaging. Panoramic lens characteristics are unique and their careful characterization can be a challenge. For example, the price to pay for a large field of view in this type of lens is high distortion in the image. For vision applications like security or inspection, a precise knowledge of the distortion introduced by panoramic lenses is essential to produce natural unwrapped views to the operator. Of special concern is the image quality which must be uniformed over the entire field of view because all directions are equally important. In addition, two hemispheric images can also be stitched together to create a complete spherical image. For these reasons, we have developed a dedicated setup to study the distortion and the image quality produced by panoramic lenses. The test setup is made of a 75-cm radius cylindrical structure with targets placed on it. Using referenced equally-spaced targets, we obtained the radial image mapping curves for various azymuthal angles, allowing us to calculate the full-field resolution map. Also, transition targets were used to find field-dependent spatial frequency where the MTF is 50%. We tested four different panoramic lenses, two panomorph lenses and two fisheyes. For each lens, we discussed the experimental resolution and MTF curves and compared some of those results to theoretical design data.
