Recent times have seen the production of normal and micro liquid lenses with variable focal length. These have been specially made with transparent elastic materials and liquid medium between them, or with a dielectric liquid medium inside the cavity. Change in the volume of the liquid medium, in the first case, or the application of an electric field as in the second, produced a change in the optical parameters of the lens. The present study offers the opto-mechanical design, manufacture and characterization of a solid elastic lens made of Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). To do so, we have prepared a mechanical support frame to hold all of the components of the lens and also allow for the application of radial stress on its periphery. In order to ensure a well-finished lens surface a high quality optical glass mold has also been constructed. Finally, we will present an analysis of the properties of this type of lens when it undergoes variations of radial stress. The experimental results are presented.

Foveated imaging addresses the need for compact wide-angle imagers capable of high-resolution and compressed data transmission. The principle behind foveated imaging is to cover a wide field-of-view (FOv) with a relatively simple and compact low-resolution lens, and use a liquid crystal spatial light modulator (SLM) to correct wavefront aberrations at any selected field point. The SLM correction provides a high-resolution fovea that can be actively moved anywhere within the FOv. While most research has focused so far mainly on SLM performance, the general trend being to increase SLM resolution and modulation depth, the actual lens design and system optimization aspects were often neglected. In this paper, we propose a wide-angle lens design intended for foveated imaging applications, and discuss typical tradeoffs. Taking this design as an example, we present a method to estimate the smallest SLM resolution required to correct the wavefront error effectively, showing that with the appropriate design, this resolution can be reduced up to 10 times compared to current designs. Increasing the SLM resolution beyond this point and increasing the modulation depth above one wavelength is not necessary, and will actually reduce the performance of the imaging system. We also demonstrate the importance of fabrication tolerances, and we propose a method to calibrate the SLM in order to cancel out all additional wavefront aberrations introduced by fabrication and assembly errors.

Ground-based optical telescopes are still the fundamental too] in observational astronomy. Building future extremely large telescopes featuring AO systems is oil the way with a prime goal to reach the diffraction limit in resolution with a few milliarcseconds over extended field. current difficulties in manufacturing large deformable mirrors (DMs) lit-nit their direct use in the main telescope system, yet it might be feasible in the future. The present paper deals with optical systems with integrated 2-3 DMs into the telescope design. Using DMs of larger diameter in the telescope, one Could minimize the number of reflecting surfaces and increase the number of actuators across the DMs, hence improving throughput and reducing the AO fitting error. We present several optical designs with fully-integrated AO that provides Conjugations to various heights. A comparative analysis of the imaging quality is given together with recommendations for optimal pupil diameter for each optical configuration.

Microalloying technology is widely used in the steel industry to improve a steel's mechanical properties. This perspective comments on current Ti, Nb and v microalloying additions to plate and forging steels used for the fabrication of reactor pressure vessels. The critical microalloying element for prior austenite grain size control is Ti and versions of a steel containing insufficient Ti-N microalloying additions are likely to experience excessive grain growth in the regions of a weldment close to the fusion boundaries. Some examples of experimental evidence of prior austenite grain coarsening in non-microalioyed RPv steels are shown.

Domain switching based nonlinear behavior is characteristic of relaxor-type piezoelectric material such as PMN-PT single crystals. These materials offer significant device performance improvements over traditional polycrystalline piezoelectric materials such as PZT-5A. The promise of increased performance of these materials has led to work in development of constitutive characterizations so that material behavior under load and material failure mechanisms can be understood and predicted. However, there is a gap between development of such theoretical developments and in workable manifestations available as part of commercial finite element codes for use in device design. In the current work, the authors extend previously documented implementation of a macro-mechanical constitutive model which addresses domain switching, into a commercially available finite element code. A rate dependent version of the constitutive model has been successfully realized and used to reproduce a variety of piezoelectric constitutive behaviors. Copyright © 2008 by ASME.

Modem technology advances combined with unique physical properties of mercury cadmium telluride (MCT) material, empower low-signal applications in technical vision systems. Properties of MCT detectors manufactured from LPE and MBE epilayers and their dependences on thickness and doping both for IR and THz regions are discussed. It is shown by comparison of experimental data and modeling of I-v dark current characteristics that MCT photodiode ultimate electrical characteristics are limited by diffusion current in n(+)-n(-)-p junctions and by current via the deep traps in the gap with position E-t= 0.7 E-g above the valence band and concentrations N-t = (1.0-5.5).10(15) cM(-3) which are comparable with donor concentration in n-region N-d = (1.1-1.8).10(15) cm(-3). Detector array parameters for a wavelength range 8-12 microns are: detectivity D*=1.9-10(11) ***(1/2)/W, noise equivalent difference temperature NEDT approximate to 9 mK, dynamical resistance R approximate to 4.10(9) Ohm for the reverse biases Delta v = 0.1-0.2 v. Also, it is shown that MCT layers can be successfully used as sub-mm or mm wave ambient temperature or moderately cooled hot electron bolometers. Thus, in addition to the wavelength range from SWIR to vLIR, where the MCT detectors are employed mainly as photodiodes or photoresistors, they can be used as sub-mm or mm wave detectors in the range from 190 microns to 8 mm. They can be employed here as semiconductor hot electron bolometers (SHEB). Measurements performed at electromagnetic wave frequencies v = 37, 55 77 GHz, and also at 0.89 and 1.58 THz with non-optimized Hg0.8Cd0.2Te bolometer prototype, has confirmed the basic concepts of SHEB. At v = 0.89 THz, 77 GHz and 37 GHz the signal temperature dependencies were measured too. At 77 K the SHEB sensitivity at v = 37 and 77 GHz is increasing up to two orders compared to room temperature data. Due to inherent complications in manufacturing and installation global out-of-straightness imperfections in cold-formed steel columns may sometimes be greater than L/960, which is the maximum amount assumed in North American cold-formed steel design specifications. The correction that should be applied to currently used column design curves to account for imperfections larger than L/960 is unknown. To find this correction the strength of typical cold-formed steel columns with explicit imperfections is determined using a geometric and material nonlinear beam finite element solution, and a closed-formed solution. The closed-formed solution is shown to agree well with the finite element solution and accurately recreates the current design specification column curves at the L/960 imperfection level. The closed-formed solution is used as the basis for predicting reductions in the nominal column stress for columns with imperfections that are greater than L/960. The developed solution is recommended in design for those situations in which large out-of-straightness imperfections are encountered.

This investigation focused on the effects of lapped channels on the web crippling capacity of cold-formed steel members. The current design recommendations in North America Specifications specifies expressions for web crippling strength of different joist geometries in case of exterior end and concentrated load locations. However, it does not permit an increase in web crippling capacity when lapped cold-formed steel channels are subjected to interior two-flange loading. This may be attributed to the lack of experimental data on web crippling strength at interior support locations. Thus, the objective of the current research is to generate experimental data for CFS channels where both flanges of channel members are lapped at the interior support location and being loaded simultaneously. This paper summarizes the results of investigation. Test specimens were loaded to failure and load history and the failure pattern were recorded. Recommendations for further testing were drawn to establish design equations for web crippling strength of lapped CFS channels at interior support location when subjected to two flange loading. The test specimen used for the investigation is single web C-section.

We consider the use of transmit and receive filters as optimum terminal filters to mitigate the effects of fading channel in Frequency Division Duplex - Code Division Multiple Access (FDD-CDMA) systems. It is shown that the effects of multipath fading channel at the mobile receiver can be mitigated by properly designing of the filters based on the use of channel information. In order to compensate the effect of feedback delay (which is inherently present in FDD systems), a linear prediction of Channel coefficients is used in the system to design the terminal filters for the current slot transmission. From the simulation results, it is shown that our proposed method performs better than that of MMSE equalizer, RAKE receiver with transmit filter (FIR-RAKE). ©2008 IEEE.

In this paper, it is reported that the design and fabrication of high-brightness and high-power InGaAlP single-side red LED with electrodes which are interdigitated with the fingers. High-brightness and high-power InGaAlP LED is a new kind of visible light LED developed in recent years, which is driven by large current capacity, high luminous efficiency and excellent heat resistance. It has been used in various fields, such as large area displays, traffic lights, brake lights and so on. As compared with the conventional double-side LED, the single-side LED is more flexible to integrate with other devices and its fabrication is simplified. The size of chip is 1mm(2). The fabrication of single-side LED, essentially, is the same as conventional LED, involving photolithography, PECvD SiO2, wet etching, evaporating, lift off and rapid thermal annealing using four masks. To control the widths of mesa and N electrode precisely, the selecting etch technique has been adopted, using HCL: H2O:H2O2 as the InGaAlP etching solution. I-v characteristics, light emission spectrum, luminous flux, luminous intensity and luminous efficiency of this LED have been measured. The characteristics are obtained with turn-on voltage of 1.5v and forward current of 400mA at its forward voltage of 3v The peak wavelength is 635nm, which corresponds to red light, and the Full Width of Half Maximum is 16.4nm at injection current of 350mA. The luminous intensity is 830 mcd. The color coordinates is x=0.6943, y=0.3056 and the color index is 18.4. So we will conclude that the high-brightness and high-power InGaAlP single-side red LED will become new focus in both scientific research and industrial investment for its wide application.
