This paper reviews some recent developments in the high-speed photodiodes for 2.0-4.0 mu m spectral range. We report investigation, design and fabrication of broad bandwidth (2 GHz) GaInAsSb/GaAlAsSb p-i-n photodiodes operating in the 0.9-2.4 mu m spectral range with submicroampere dark current. As well, we present InAs-based and InAs/InAsSbP photodiodes with long-wavelength cutoff of 3.8 mu m. An analysis of the photodiode performance through the investigation of current-voltage, capacitance-voltage and spectral responsivity characteristics was carried out. Also, noise and speed-response characteristics were studied. In addition to high-speed response and low noise level these photodiodes offer room-temperature operation and hence are commercially viable. These devices are of great interest for a wide range of applications, such as high-resolution laser diode spectroscopy of gases and molecules, eye-safe laser rangefinding systems, the free-space optical link as well as systems of optical fiber communication.

Since its development, Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machines (PMSM) has been used in a number of specific applications. However, in recent years PMSMs have become more attractive due to developments in new materials for permanent magnets and in semiconductor technology for converter design. Recent investigations have proposed some implementations applying the Direct Torque Control (DTC) technique to PMSM motor drives, offering a fast and accurate control. This paper presents a modified DTC scheme, using fuzzy logic with Pulse Wide Modulation (PWM) to improve stator flux and the electric torque by significantly reducing their ripple. The proposed method effectiveness has been verified by computer simulations and experimental tests on a laboratory prototype. These results are compared with the ones obtained with a modified DTC using a PI controlled PWM with current limit.

Significant progress has been made in recent years on the design and fabrication of optical fibre-based sensor systems for applications in structural health monitoring. Two sensor designs have tended to dominate namely, fibre Bragg gratings and extrinsic fibre Fabry-Perot sensors. However, the cost and time associated with these sensors is relatively high and as a consequence, the current paper describes a simple procedure to fabricate intrinsic fibre Fabry-Perot interferometric strain sensors. The technique involves the use of hydrofluoric acid to etch a cavity in a cleaved optical fibre. Two such etched cavities were fusion spliced to create an intrinsic fibre Fabry-Perot cavity. The feasibility of using this device for strain monitoring was demonstrated. Excellent correlation was obtained between the optical and surface-mounted electrical resistance strain gauge.

This review on selective oxidations is split into two parts. The first part concerns catalytic gas-phase oxidation reactions in micro-reactors, typically being performed in wall-coated micro-channels [v. Hessel, G. Kolb, J.C. Schouten, v. Cominos, C. Hofmann, H. Lowe, G. Nikolaidis, R. Zapf, A. Ziogas, E.R. Delsman, M.H.J.M. de Croon, O. de la Iglesia, R. Mallada, J. Santamaria, in: S. Ernst, E. Gallei, J.A. Lercher, Rossini, E. Santacesaria (Eds.), conference pre-prints of the DGMK/SCI-conference "Oxidation and Functionalization: Classical and Alternative Routes and Sources", Milan, Italy, October 12-14, 2005 [1] (see also acknowledgements at the end of the article)]. Liquid and gas-liquid oxidations are not included due to their different reactor design and way of processing. This comprises process development for fine chemical intermediates or bulk chemicals. By example of different reactions, the benefits of micro-chemical process engineering are shown. While there are numerous engineering reasons, one major driver is the increase of selectivity by diminishing side and follow-up reactions, most often the total oxidation to carbon dioxide, through preventing or at least decreasing hot spot formation. Another major advantage of micro-reactors is that mass-transfer resistances can be suppressed, thereby giving access to intrinsic kinetics. In the second part, we describe selective oxidation as one gas purification step in the framework of fuel processing for fuel cells, which is most often termed preferential oxidation in this context. Here, the selectivity towards carbon monoxide formation by diminishing the hydrogen oxidation is a major driver. The currentdevelopments are grouped so that all facets from kinetic modelling, heat transfer studies, catalyst testing, reactor and integrated-system engineering up to process engineering, exergy analysis, performance benchmarking and operation under real-case process flows are covered. In this work, we developed and implemented an image capturing and processing system that equipped with capability of capturing images from an input video in real time. The input video can be a video from a PC, video camcorder or DvD player. We developed two modes of operation in the system. In the first mode, an input image from the PC is processed on the processing board (development platform with a digital signal processor) and is displayed on the PC. In the second mode, current captured image from the video camcorder (or from DvD player) is processed on the board but is displayed on the LCD monitor. The major difference between our system and other existing conventional systems is that image-processing functions are performed on the board instead of the PC (so that the functions can be used for further developments on the board). The user can control the operations of the board through the Graphic User Interface (GUI) provided on the PC. In order to have a smooth image data transfer between the PC and the board, we employed Real Time Data Transfer (RTDX™) technology to create a link between them. For image processing functions, we developed three main groups of function: (1) Point Processing;(2) Filtering and;(3) 'Others'. Point Processing includes rotation, negation and mirroring. Filter category provides median, adaptive, smooth and sharpen filtering in the time domain. In 'Others' category, auto-contrast adjustment, edge detection, segmentation and sepia color are provided, these functions either add effect on the image or enhance the image. We have developed and implemented our system using C/C# programming language on TMS320DM642 (or DM642) board from Texas Instruments (TI). The system was showcased in College of engineering (CoE) exhibition 2006 at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and have more than 40 users tried our system. It is demonstrated that our system is adequate for real time image capturing. Our system can be used or applied for application
