This paper presents a low power and wideband transimpedancc amplifier (TIA) design for 10 Gb/s optical receiver. Using a 0.18-mum CMOS technology, this TIA adopts a two-stage topology with inductive shunt-peaking and series-peaking techniques to optimize the power consumption and bandwidth performance. The measured -3-dB bandwidth is 8.6 GHz in the presence of a 0.15-pF photodiode capacitance. The transimpedance gain is 59 dB Omega with only 18 mW power consumption from a 1.8-v supply. The measured input referred noise current is less than 25 pA / v Hz up to 9 GHz.

This paper discusses the use of a systems theory, design coverage and control topics in nanotechnology and microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) courses developed and offered in the College of engineering in RIT. The multidisciplinary nano and microengineering have accomplished a phenomenal growth over the last twenty years due to the rapid advances in microelectronics, molecular technologies, bulk and surface micromachining, computer-aided-design (CAD), etc. Recent fundamental and applied research and developments in molecular electronics and informatics have been notably contributed to the current progress. Enabling nano/micro engineering utilizes and depends on the fundamentals, software and hardware. These prominent developments largely depend on modern engineering and science providing the end-users with the needed technologies and design concurrency. With the increasing demands in high-performance envisioned nanosystems and emerged microsystems, designers apply new concepts. The role of nanotechnology and MEMS courses in the engineering curriculum is examined. We discuss the integration of design, optimization, control and analysis topics in Nano Science, engineering and Technology (NanoSET) and MEMS courses. The MEMS curriculum consists of three courses, e.g., MEMS design, MEMS Fabrication and MEMS Systems Evaluation. We stress the need for systems theory, in addition to basic fundamentals coverage and fabrication emphasis. The developed courses ensure the overall educational, professional and curriculum objectives.

The optimal process parameters were determined by using a design of experiment (DOE) approach for chemical-mechanical polishing of indium tin oxide with a sufficient removal amount and good planarity. The electrical and optical properties, such as current-voltage (I-v) curve and photoluminescence spectrum, were discussed in order to evaluate the possibility of the CMP application for an organic light emitting diode (OLED) device using an ITO film. The electrical I-v characteristics and optical properties of ITO thin film were improved after the CMP process using optimized process parameters compared to that of as-deposited thin film before the CMP process.

The International conference on optical and Laser Diagnostics (ICOLAD 2007), held at City University in May 2007, was the third meeting in this well established series, following upon the first in 2002 and the second in 2005. During that time the area of optical and laser diagnostics has continued to develop and to expand with both the changes seen in the technology and the availability of new optical components and laser systems. The field remains one of the most interdisciplinary of the topics of today's research, impacting upon areas from fundamental physics to IT and encompassing a number of different areas in engineering today. These proceedings are a record of current practice in this area from a conference which remains an international forum for new ideas and developments in this exciting branch of optical engineering. It builds upon the foundation of research in the broad field of optical diagnostics in a number of industrial and biomedical application areas at the City University, London. The conference was structured into a number of sessions reflecting topical developments in engine research, optical sensing and measurement and biomedical engineering held over three days in London, with the contributed talks led by invited papers from many internationally known and respected experts in their field from mainland Europe, the United States and Japan and the UK. The material covered encompasses such major themes as laser diagnostics, reciprocating engine-related applications and flow velocity measurement, extending to include biomedical and structural monitoring using advanced optical techniques. The papers at this conference continue to draw their authority from the reputations of the authors and the groups and companies internationally that they represent. This volume brings together a valuable cross-section of world-leading research at the time. designed RGC TIA circuit was simulated on the basis of 0.25 mum CMOS process using HSPICE. Supply voltage is 2.5 v. Power consumption of the whole circuit is 16 mW. Mid-band transimpedance (TIA) gain of TIA is 60.1 dBOmega and -3 dB bandwidth is satisfied with photodiode capacitance and the average noise current spectral density of 18.9 pA/sqrt(Hz). TIA output eye-diagram of 2.5-Gb/s 2 31 -1 PRBS signal. We obtained period of 300 ps, wide and clean eye-diagram. Output eye-diagram voltage amplitude of 100 muA input current signal is equal to 90 mvpp. A core size is 210 mum times 60 mum.

It is acknowledged that most current engineering curricula can not keep up with technological developments, and that time constrains limits what material can be incorporated to it; topics of High-Density Digital Systems design for the electrical and computer engineering programs is no exception and decision about which material is included is always a matter of discussion between how deep should technical information be presented versus practical application-related material and experiences. This paper presents a project-based learning model (PBL) of High-Density Digital Systems design for one senior year course on the electronic engineering undergraduate program; proposed projects are system-level specific topics from a multidisciplinary collage of fields such as communications, instrumentation and control systems which are presented by collaborating instructors from those fields. High-Density Logic and Reconfigurable Device topics such as vHDL, FPGA architecture, timing and constraints are presented in context of specific problems as a way to promote students' interests and experiences, systems required throughput establishes benchmarks with which compare designs from each team of students. Course strategy has assured collaboration of instructors from different fields, thus creating an opportunity to continue course projects on academy projects or thesis works.

This paper presents the architecture and the status of the optical Multiplexer Board (OMB) for the ATLAS/LHC Tile hadronic calorimeter (TileCal). This board will analyze the front-end data CRC to prevent bit and burst errors produced by radiation. Besides, due to its position within the data acquisition chain it will be used to emulate front-end data for tests. The first two prototypes of the final OMB 9U version have been produced at CERN. Detailed design issues and manufacturing features of these prototypes are described. These prototypes are being validated while firmware developments are being implemented in the programmable devices of the board.

Since its development, permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSM) has been used in a number of specific applications. However, in recent years PMSMs have become more attractive due to developments in new materials for permanent magnets and in semiconductor technology for converter design. Recent investigations have proposed some implementations applying the direct torque control (DTC) technique to PMSM motor drives, offering a fast and accurate control. This paper presents a modified DTC scheme, using fuzzy logic with pulse wide modulation (PWM) to improve stator flux and the electric torque by significantly reducing their ripple. The proposed method effectiveness has been verified by computer simulations and experimental tests on a laboratory prototype. These results are compared with the ones obtained with a modified DTC using a PI controlled PWM with current limit.

current testbenches for nuclear imaging devices aim to simulate only a single stage of the system at a time. This approach is useful in early design stages where accuracy is not necessary. However, it would be desirable that different tools could be combined to achieve more detailed simulations. In this work, we present a high precision testbench that has been developed to test nuclear imaging systems. Its accuracy lies in the possibility of linking different simulation tools using the right one for each part of the system. High energy events are simulated using Geant4 (High Energy Simulator). Analog and digital electronics are verified using Cadence Spectre and ModelSim. This testbench structure allows testing any physical topology, scintillation crystals, photomultiplier tubes (PMTs), avalanche photodiodes (APDs), with any kind of ASIC, discrete analog and digital electronics, thus reducing the prototyping and design time. New system developments can be easily verified using behavioral and circuital description models for analog and digital electronics. Finally, a dual-head continuous LSO scintillation crystal positron emission tomography (PET) system has been used as an example for evaluation of the testbench.
