In recent years there has been an increasing interest in holography and its applications. One such application is data storage. Optimising the holographic recording materials is therefore of critical importance in the capacity and clarity of the information stored. Photopolymer materials are practical materials for use as holographic recording media, as they are inexpensive and self-processing. Understanding the photochemical mechanisms present during recording in these materials is crucial in enabling further developments. Obtaining critical material parameters allows improvements of the performance of these materials, such as its spatial frequency response or its environmental stability. This also allows a better understanding of the photochemical processes that occur during the formation of the holographic grating. Our current work, which is presented in this paper deals with two of the processes that occur during holographic grating formation. The first of these is the photochemistry involved in the absorption of the light by the photosensitive dye. We monitor the power of the transmitted beams, which are used for recording the gratings. The second process we concentrate on is the inhibition effect present during grating growth. It has been noted in the literature that there is a slight delay at the start of gating growth. The reason for this delay is due to an inhibition process, which is present to some extent in all photopolymer recordings. The work presented here explains why it occurs. A theoretical model is developed to predict the behaviour of the temporal evolution of the grating. This model has been improved to account for the absorption effects of the material due to the photosensitive dye and the inhibition period, which results in a reduction in the rate of polymerisation.

We describe the fabrication of defect engineered waveguide detectors, and demonstrate that with optimal thermal treatment, detector dark current may be minimized to be a small fraction of the signal, even at a reverse bias of 5 v. A design for a terminal detector (as opposed to a signal monitor) is proposed which consists of a waveguide ring. Preliminary simulations suggest a significant increase in responsivity compared to straight waveguide detectors

In this work we present a successful approach to enhance the gain characteristics of In(Al)GaAsSb MIR diode lasers by using In-rich highly-strained quaternary QW materials. Our lasers demonstrate three times increase in the differential gain with halved threshold current. Calculations show that observed gain enhancement is caused by improvement of hole confinement in highly strained QWs

An application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) neurostimulator capable of stimulating multiple electrodes in unison has been designed and tested. The ASIC utilizes multiple matched current sinks and sources to provide localized stimulation and is designed to drive electrodes organized in a hexagonal mosaic. This organization allows each stimulating electrode to be surrounded by up to six return electrodes, effectively isolating each stimulation site. The ASIC was manufactured using a high-voltage complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor process, which allows up to 20 v to be applied across the circuitry. This provides the greatest versatility for testing with electrodes and tissues of varying impedances in-situ and allows the device to be used in other neurostimulation applications such as functional electrical stimulation. The design has been thoroughly tested and meets all the design specifications

Bioelectronics is an important technology in enhancing the quality of life, especially for those who are suffering from physiological difficulties. Novel biomimetic microelectronic systems will enable treatment of some of presently incurable human handicaps such as hearing loss, blindness (retinal prosthesis), paralysis (neuron-muscular prosthesis), and memory loss (cortical prosthesis). With advancement of bionanotechnology and quantitative medical research, the potential application of biomimetic systems is highly promising. In this paper we review the current status of biomimetic microelectronic systems and challenging issues in basic interface between electrodes and neuronal network, laboratory on a chip (LoC), and generation of power for implantable devices. For laboratory-on-a-chip (LoC), we examine a new way of detecting and sensing molecules on a chip with single molecule/particle sensitivity by fusing integrated optics with microfluidics, based on integrated hollow-core antiresonant reflecting optical waveguides (ARROW) waveguides. With multilayer dielectric confinement, the light is guided through hollow channels with cross sections of a few microns squared. We have demonstrated efficient light guiding in liquid-core ARROWs, single-molecule fluorescence sensitivity in fully planar beam geometry, surface-enhanced Raman scattering, fluorescence from live ribosomes in buffer solution, and electrical fluorescence control by applying a voltage between fluidic reservoirs connected to the waveguide channels. For electrical power sourcing of implantable biomimetic devices and systems, we illustrate the potential of the diffusion potential differences established between two half-cells of electrolyte solutions of different concentrations to generate directly an electric current. This concentration cell operates solely on a salt concentration gradient. The future advancement of biomimetic systems design will critically depend on computer aids as in vLSI developments

Sub-30nm MOSFET fabrication technology is proposed based on a dedicated process redesign suitable for a non-melt laser annealing technique. Two major features of the laser annealing (LA), i.e. diffusion-less and higher dopant activation enable us to apply more elaborate channel engineering, involving multiple halo implantations and optimized gate-predoping, that contributes further scaling of a functional gate-length (L g ) and effective gate-insulator thickness (T inv ), maintaining sufficient current drivability prior to any local stress engineering applied, for instance, I ON = 650/340 [muA/mum] (nMOS/pMOS) at I OFF = 100 nA/mum, vdd = 0.9v, were obtained for sub-30nm L g (and also sidewall length) devices

A multipath transmission diversity scheme using predictive transmitter filter in the frequency division duplex-code division multiple access systems (FDD-CDMA) is introduced over a multipath fading channel. A transmitter filter is added in the transmitter, while a Rake combiner is used in the receiver. To design the transmitter filter at the base station for the current slot, we utilize the downlink channel impulse response (CIR) of the previous slots. It is assumed that the downlink CIR is transmitted from the mobile terminal to the base station. In addition, to compensate inherent feedback delays occurring during the transmission of channel information from mobile terminal to the base station, the channel prediction is utilized. Results show that the new scheme can significantly improve the output signal to noise ratio (SNR) compared with conventional Rake receiver

The present work, that has been performed in the frame of the ASI (Italian Space Agency) program WAvE (W-band analysis and verification), i.e. the identification of innovative technologies to be used for the design and development of on-board W-band radars or telecommunication payloads. The paper provides and comments on the major results achieved in this investigation. Based on the state of the art of the present technology the possibility of developing low level W band MMICs with many functions integrated on the same chip has been investigated in order to reduce drastically the number of interconnections, the number of measurements and the workmanship with respect to the equivalent hybrid subsystems, which means a drastic reduction in terms of dimensions, weight and costs. As for the power is concerned, an analysis of the performances of MMICs developed using state-of-the-art consolidated monolithic processes has been carried out together with the analysis of the potential performance of new "wide band-gap" semiconductors that start to play an important role in terms of power and efficiency. At W-band, WR-10 waveguide losses play a significant role in the management of the performance of transmitter and receiver chains and of antennas feeds. In order to reduce such losses different technologies have to be explored. One of those is quasi optics. Quasi-optics is the name given to the technique of manipulating mm-wave signals in free-space beams through the use of quasi-optical components such as lenses, mirrors, polarisers and so on. Quasi-optics (QO) has a number of advantages over other transmission techniques (such as waveguide and microstrip), including low loss propagation and wide bandwidth capacity
