In this paper a procedure for the global optimization of mid-infrared GaAs/AlGaAs quantum cascade lasers that relies on the method of simulated annealing is presented. We propose a double longitudinal optical phonon resonance design obtained via a ladder of three states, with subsequent pairs separated by optical phonon energy. Addition of an extra level decreases the lower laser level population by enabling an efficient extraction into the injector region. The output characteristics of the optimized structures are calculated using the full self-consistent rate equation model, which includes all of the relevant scattering mechanisms. We also presented the experimentally measured output characteristics of an initial device, which are in agreement with the numerically calculated values, confirming the good design capabilities of the applied procedure.

This paper addresses the nature and assessment of drillpipe fatigue. A detailed examination and statistical analysis of the three published sources of drillpipe S-N curve data supplemented by principles of machine design, provides a consistent basis to determine S-N curves for drillpipe of arbitrary size and grade. The machine design approach translates fatigue life characteristics of a small sample to that of drillpipe as a larger component. This translation accounts for size, manufacturing process and influences such as environment and vibrations. The resulting fatigue behavior agrees with previous data on grades D and E collected on full scale pipe specimens. Further, the current approach is demonstrated to be successful in predicting the fatigue behavior of higher drillpipe grades (G, X, S, v) for which scant data is currently available. Finally, the work is shown to be consistent with Hansford and Lubinski's 1964 analysis which informs the fatigue guidelines in API RP7G. Given the S-N curve and magnitude of variable loads, fatigue assessment requires tracking the number and magnitude of stress cycles. Since wellbore tortuosity and changes of drilling parameters with depth render the calculations cumbersome, a computer simulation is necessary. The simulation enables rapid and efficient evaluation of hole section, drillstring, trajectory and drilling parameter permutations. This is particularly useful in developments where a number of wells are drilled from a single structure. Application of the program is illustrated with a case study. The effect of a large shallow dogleg on accumulated fatigue in the drillpipe is discussed, enabling informed decisions on drilling subsequent hole sections. Advances in low power design open the possibility to harvest energy from the environment to power electronic circuits. Electrical energy can be harvested from various transducers including piezoelectric materials. Piezoelectric materials can be used as mechanisms to transfer mechanical energy usually ambient vibration into electrical energy that can be stored and used to power other devices. It has been found that a piezoelectric device attached to a beam with cantilever boundary conditions provides an effective configuration for capturing transverse vibrations and converting them into useful electrical power. Piezoelectric thin films attached to a silicon beam also have attracted attention for energy harvesting applications. In this paper, we present the results of a preliminary study of the effect of vibration amplitude on the performance of a PMN-PT single crystal beam with interdigitated electrodes pattern. The structure is used to demonstrate that feasibility of a novel piezoelectric monomorph cantilever beam for producing high AC voltage. The energy harvesting capability of a PMN-PT cantilever beam is tested on a lOmm-long and 1.2mm-wide rectangular prototype made out of 0.1mm-thick PMN-PT film with interdigitated electrodes. The experiments are performed to test the level of AC voltage and current generated from the PMN-PT cantilever beam device when subjected to transverse vibration of varying amplitude at the first mode of the resonant frequency. The frequency response of the monomorph prototype shows that the first mode resonance frequency of the excitation model is approximately 190Hz. We found that increasing the poling voltage also causes increased output AC voltage magnitude. These tests show that a significantly high AC voltage of 13v was achieved with 50μm shaker displacement. The measured RMS current was ∼20μA.

EXIST is being studied as the Black Hole Finder Probe, one of the 3 Einstein Probe missions under NASA's Beyond Einstein program. The major science goals for EXIST include highly sensitive full-sky hard X-ray survey in a very wide energy band of 5 - 600 kev. The scientific requirements of wide energy band (10-600 kev for the High Energy Telescope considered for EXIST) and large field of view (approximately 130 degrees x 60 degrees in the current design, incorporating an array of 18 contiguous very large area coded aperture telescopes) presents significant imaging challenges. The requirement of achieving high imaging sensitivity puts stringent limits on the uniformity and knowledge of systematics for the detector plane. In order to accomplish the ambitious scientific requirements of EXIST, it is necessary to implement many novel techniques. Here we present the initial results of our extensive Monte-Carlo simulations of coded mask imaging for EXIST to estimate the performance degradation due to various factors affecting the imaging such as the non-ideal detector plane and bright partially coded sources.

Power switch technology has been advancing dramatically in recent years. Breakthroughs occur regularly in current density, switching performance, thermal design, ruggedness, and cost. All of these factors contribute to improvements in efficiency, power density, and system cost of today's power electronic systems. This paper discusses some of these developments in the 40 v-300 v class, especially as they could apply to selected applications such as isolated DC/DC converters, switching audio amplifiers, automotive motion control, and plasma displays. Careful design and characterization techniques are essential to assure avalanche current capability and forward bias safe operating area, and various technologies are compared. Trench and planar design and performance differences are highlighted. Packaging improvements such as the DirectFET are essential for improving thermal design and reducing package electrical parasitics

Even though decades of research and development on vacuum microelectronics has not achieved the technology to perform at circuit level, recent developments with diamond [1] and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) [2,3] vacuum transistors, with high gain and stable emission current, has indicated the potential of tiese devices in integrated circuit form. In this paper, the design and fabrication of a single chip CNT vacuum field emission differential amplifier (WE diff-amp) is presented for the first time. The differential amplifier is the most widely used circuit building block in integrated circuits. The implementation of a vacuum field emission transistor in the differential amplifier configuration will promote the development of vFE ultra-high-speed integrated circuits, logic gates and systems. Moreover, the vFE diff-amp will be valuable for applications requiring temperature-immunity and radiation-hardness such as advanced telecommunication, military and space electronics. In this study, a dual-mask microfabrication process is employed to achieve the single-chip vFE diff-amp that integrates two identical vFE transistors with built-in split gates and integrated anodes. In the fabrication process, the first mask defines and patterns the self-aligned gate with minimum gate capacitance for high frequency operation, as shown in Fig. 1. The next mask is used to align and pattern the microcathode array within the gate area. In both cases, the a Si gate electrode is dryetched by a gas mixture of SF6/O2 in a reactive-ion-etch (RIE) system. A SEM picture of the CNTs vFE diff-amp after gate patterning and microcathodes alignment is shown in Fig. 2(a). Following wetetch of the thermal oxide, a thin film of titanium (as a diffusion barrier layer) and nickel (as the CNT growth catalyst) are sputter-deposited in sequence on the vFE diff-amp pattern. Today, CMOS image sensors are increasingly used in consumer products. Digital cameras, web cameras, optical mouses, and smart sensors are some examples. One of the most used CMOS image sensor architectures is based on the active pixel sensor (APS). In order to understand more design tradeoffs, a prototype chip was designed to evaluate different pixel architectures. This paper describes the prototype chip and the test results. The prototype chip is composed of 8 different pixels and a 3-to-8 row decoder. There are two different APS architectures, 3 transistor or 4 transistor. The 8 different pixels are based on the 2 APS architectures with some variations. These variations are 2 types of reset transistor, Nmos or Pmos, and 2 types of photodiodes, n+ - psub and nwell - p sub. The prototype chip was manufactured in a standard 3.3v 0.35 μm 1-poly 4-metal CMOS process. The row decoder was designed using a pass transistor network, inverters, and pull-up transistors. The test results show that for white light, n+ - psub photodiodes and n well - psub photodiodes have approximately the same response. Also, 4 transistor pixels have better response, but the voltage range for linear operation is smaller. 3 transistor pixels have larger voltage range for linear operation and less dark current. The results also confirm that the output of the pixels is inversely proportional to the distance of the light source. © 2005 IEEE.

This paper presents progress made in making device-level vacuum-packaged microbolometers as infrared detectors on flexible substrates. Polyimide PI5878G serves as the flexible substrate and semiconducting Yttrium Barium Copper Oxide (YBCO) is used as the bolometeric material. Finite element analysis is used to design a vacuum cavity housing a microbolometer. Suitable materials are selected for the microcavity fabrication based on results of the computer simulations. During fabrication, sacrificial polyimide around the detector facilitates the formation of a vacuum microcavity with an optical window. Micromachining is carried out through trenches in the microcavity wall. After isolating the microbolometer from the ambient, the trenches are sealed shut by sputtering in vacuum. The fabricated devices are characterized for responsivity and detectivity. At a bias voltage of 10 v, 40×40nm2devices exhibited a current responsivity of 6.13×10-5A/W to a broad-band infrared radiation modulated at 5 Hz. A maximum detectivity of 1.76×105cm-Hz1/2/W was measured. A relatively low thermal conductance of 3.36×10-6W/K was measured implying good thermal isolation of the bolometers and therefore an intact vacuum cavity. © 2005 IEEE.

The success of the NSTAR ion engine on the Deep Space 1 spacecraft coupled with the recent success of the ground-based life test of the flight spare engine has paved the way for implementation of ion thrusters on NASA science missions. Even with the long life demonstrated during the flight spare test, greater propellant throughput is still desired. One relatively simple way to increase thruster life is to use carbon-based ion optics, which are much more resistant to erosion than molybdenum optics. Carbon-carbon ion optics have recently been demonstrated to meet performance requirements and withstand launch loads. The present paper discusses the results of a 1000-hour wear test intended to determine the erosion resistance and voltage standoff capability of the optics in a relevant environment, i.e. duration testing on an NSTAR-like thruster. The wear test was conducted for 1029 hours at a beam voltage of 1800 v and a beam current of 1.76 A. Ion optics performance was stable throughout the test with slight decreases observed in the perveance limit. Accelerator grid erosion was characterized by measuring the pits and grooves erosion profile at the center of the grid. Erosion rates of 27 μm/hr in the pits were determined. Erosion data were compared to calculations using a 3D ion optics code with excellent results. The ion optics operated at the nominal test voltages for the duration of the test with recycle rates initially as low as 0.2 per hour, and less than five per hour for the bulk of the test. Field emission currents between the grids were observed and were identified as occurring at the edge of the optics assembly in a region of electric field stress in excess of the material threshold. This problem can be easily eliminated in future developments by a simple design change which does not impact thruster performance. Carbon-carbon ion optics technology is now ready for the next phase of development, flight qualification, and implementation on NASA science missions.
