We present a new method to design the energy level scheme of quantum dot (QD) structures by combining band gap engineering with the self-organized growth of (QDs). With the embedding of QDs in two-dimensional supperlattices optical transition energies, ionization energies and the absorption properties of this system can be adjusted.. This scheme. is applied for novel photodetectors made of InAs QDs embedded in an AlAs/GaAs superlattice, and the absorption energy is tailored by changing the superlattice period. Moreover, the dark current of these devices is reduced by more than one order of magnitude compared to devices without a superlattice. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.v. All rights reserved.

The 2001 ITRS roadmap identified the need for tight coupling of design technology with manufacturing technology in order to ensure the successful production of circuits fabricated at the 65nm technology node. The design creation process for 65nm needs to efficiently explore the interaction between device, cell design and manufacturability. Using fast simulation tools for device and lithography simulation and an automated tool for standard cell generation, various process and cell architectural options were investigated. The average and standard deviation of line width had to be matched to the type of application because of the direct relationship between leakage current and performance. Best process latitude for poly line widths is achieved with Full Phase technology. It is shown that by matching design rules to the Full Phase capabilities and using automated layout tools, manufacturability could be optimized without hurting density or performance.

The design and implementation of a low power high speed differential signaling input/output (I/O) interface in 0.18um CMOS technology is presented. The motivations for smaller signal swings in transmission are discussed. The prototype chip supports 4 Gbps data rate with less than 10mA current at 1.8v supply according to Cadence Spectre post-layout simulations. Performance comparisons between the proposed device and other signaling technologies reported recently are given. © 2003 IEEE.

This paper presents an overview of the Canyon Express umbilical and control system which extends 56 miles from a host platform in Main Pass Block 261 to connect three deepwater gas fields in the Mississippi Canyon and Desoto Canyon Areas of the Gulf of Mexico - King's Peak (6500 fsw), Aconcagua (7000 fsw), and Camden Hills (7200 fsw) - operated by BP, TotalFinaElf, and Marathon Oil, respectively. The Canyon Express control system is a hybrid fiber optic / electro-hydraulic multiplex system designed for 11 wells, with the primary operator interface being a dual PC Master Control Station (MCS) installed at the host facility. The umbilical system, which connects the host facility to each subsea well, provides for electrical power, signal control, hydraulic supply, chemical injection, well annulus monitoring, servicing via dedicated service line, and methanol injection (infield umbilicals only). Methanol supply to each field is via a separate Single Methanol Distribution Line (SMDL) and powered system of subsea metering valves. The paper will emphasize technical challenges and lessons-learned during the design, manufacture, and installation of this deepwater umbilical and control system. The technical challenges and lessons presented in this paper can be directly applied to future subsea oil and gas developments, particularly long offsets in deepwater. Canyon Express demonstrates that the state of technology existing in the industry today is generally in line with the control system requirements of such projects. However, improvements can be made in the design, qualification and testing of components to enhance reliability in deepwater applications. Lessons-learned on this project include issues relating to electrical and electro-optical connectors, umbilical cable terminations, chemical metering valves, and testing during installation. Since the deployment of the ARPANET in the 60s and the local area networks, Intranets, and the Internet in the 70s and 80s, research investigation and commercial product developments have focused on network infrastructures such as fiber trunks, routers, and switches, as well as OSI layers 2 and 3 protocol equipment. Recently, in response to the increasing complexity of the communication protocols and exploding demand for functionalities in network active components, chip manufacturers and researchers recently shifted their effort to the design and implementation of NPUs (network processing units). This work investigates the characteristics and properties of network applications and protocols. Understanding the requirements of these applications and protocols enables the formulation of the overall objectives and specifications in the design of NPUs. Some of the existing commercial products are surveyed and their functional objectives and design approaches are examined. We conclude with the current status of NPU development. Immediate challenges in design and implementation of NPUs, with respect to the rapid network expansion and increasing traffic demand, are also discussed.

In view of the growing complexity of computational tasks and their design, we propose that certain interactive systems may be better designed by utilizing computational strategies based on the study of the human brain. Compared with current engineering paradigms, brain theory offers the promise of improved self-organization and adaptation to the current environment, freeing the programmer from having to address those issues in a procedural manner when designing and implementing large-scale complex systems. To advance this hypothesis, we discus a multi-agent surveillance system where 12 agent CPUs each with its own camera, compete and cooperate to monitor a large room. To cope with the overload of image data streaming from 12 cameras, we take inspiration from the primate's visual system, which allows the animal to operate a real-time selection of the few most conspicuous locations in visual input. This is accomplished by having each camera agent utilize the bottom-up, saliency-based visual attention algorithm of Itti and Koch (vision Research 2000;40(10-12):1489-1506) to scan the scene for objects of interest. Real time operation is achieved using a distributed version that runs on a 16-CPU Beowulf cluster composed of the agent computers. The algorithm guides cameras to track and monitor salient objects based on maps of color, orientation, intensity, and motion. To spread camera view points or create cooperation in monitoring highly salient targets, camera agents bias each other by increasing or decreasing the weight of different feature vectors in other cameras, using mechanisms similar to excitation and suppression that have been documented in electrophysiology, psychophysics and imaging studies of low-level visual processing. In addition, if cameras need to compete for computing resources, allocation of computational time is weighed based upon the history of each camera. The current fast growing use of the Internet for commercial transactions has created large demands for data protection and network security. IPsec standard and protocols address these demands by providing different mechanisms to ensure integrity, privacy, and authentication of data when it is transmitted, or accessed, via the IP network. Encryption algorithms are by far the most important tools for network and communication security in the IPSec standard. This paper presents a summary of our work to design an efficient implementation of Rijndael algorithm. Rijndael is the new Advanced Encryption Standard adopted by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Two different hardware implementations are presented and analyzed. In the first approach, only one lookup table is used to implement the S-Box that performs substitution for all round transformations, which is the bottleneck in the Rijndael algorithm. To achieve optimum speed of data encryption in the feedback mode, access to S-Box is pipelined between rounds. The second realization is based on systolic architecture where sets of Interconnected cells are performing intermediate round transformations. Each cell consists of an S-Box instance with a small combinational circuit to run the round transformation. verilog design code were developed and synthesized for both implementations, then compared to the existing hardware implementations. It is found that our implementation using standard cell libraries provides much faster encryption rate compared to the reported FPGA and software approach hence it can be deployed in high-speed optical networks.
