Developing optimization software that is capable of solving large and complex real-life problems is a huge effort. It is based on a deep knowledge of four areas: theory of optimization Algorithms, relevant results of computer science, principles of software engineering. and the state-of-the-art in computer technology. The paper highlights the diverse requirements of optimization software and discusses the ingredients needed to fulfil those requirements. In addition to reviewing the current hardware/software environment it hints at how recent hardware developments can influence future optimization software. After a survey of computationally successful techniques for continuous optimization, it also outlines the perspective offered by parallel computing, and stresses the importance of optimization modeling systems. Being a survey paper. it includes many references to both give due credit to results in the field of optimization software, and to help readers obtain more detailed information on issues of interest. MAXI, Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image, is an X-ray observatory on the Japanese Experimental Module (JEM) Exposed Facility (EF) on the International Space Station (ISS). MAXI is a slit scanning camera which consists of two kinds of X-ray detectors: one is a one-dimensional position-sensitive proportional counter with a total area of similar to 5000 cm(2), the Gas Slit Camera (GSC), and the other is an X-ray CCD array with a total area similar to 200 cm(2), the Solid-state Slit Camera (SSC). The GSC subtends a field of view with an angular dimension of 1degrees x 180degrees while the SSC subtends a field of view with an angular dimension of P times a little less than 180degrees. In the course of one station orbit, MAXI can scan almost the entire sky with a precision of v and with an X-ray energy range of 0.5-30 kev. We have developed an engineering model (EM) for all components of the SSC. Their performance test is ongoing. We have also developed several kinds of CCDs fabricated from different wafers. Since the thermal condition of the ISS is not suitable for the CCD operation, the operating temperature of the CCD estimated to be -85 similar to -50degreesC at the end of mission life. We therefore carefully need to choose CCD considering not only detection efficiency and readout noise, but also the dark current. We report here the current status of the EM of the SSC and the X-ray responsibity of CCDs.

This paper describes the design of a 2.5 Gbps laser diode (LD) driver circuit in a 0.35/spl mu/m digital CMOS process. The LD driver delivers a biased current range from 5 to 10 mA and a modulation current of 20 mA. The biased current is programmable by a 3-bit D/A. High current driving capability as well as agile switching speed are achieved by inductive peaking and preemphasis techniques. Operating under a single 3 v power supply, the maximum power consumption is 150 mW. Chip size is 1200/spl mu/m /spl times/ 900/spl mu/m.

This paper addresses the development and current status of the drive train vibration monitoring system (vMS) for v-22 tiltrotor aircraft, which monitors vibrations in the rotors, engines, interconnect shafting system (ISS), pylon shafts, and nacelle blowers, and includes the ISS hanger bearing temperature monitoring and the distinct function of rotor track and balance. The vMS design is based on the v-22 maintenance goals: to detect existing and/or developing faults to support the on-condition maintenance of mechanical components and to enhance preventive maintenance. This paper also covers the dynamic component monitoring (DCM) algorithms that have been incorporated in the Aircraft Maintenance Event Ground Station (AMEGS). Lessons learned and recent developments associated with the interface of the Integrated Electronic Technical Manual (IETM), including the approach for quick implementation of new maintenance procedures, are presented. The Bell-Boeing/NAvAIR Integrated Product Team provided a smooth transition from engineeringdesign to field implementation.

The switching process of the various devices of the power supply feeding a copper vapour type laser, leads to the generation of conducted EMI. The high speed switching action by a thyratron operating at high voltage and current leads to conducted EMI. Simulation of the conducted EMI from a copper vapour laser has been done using a powerful circuit simulator software SABER. Based on the results obtained by simulation and measurement, it is proposed to design filters that will reduce the conducted EMI to acceptable levels.

An integration process and measured result of a fully embedded thin film MSM photodetector (PD) fabricated from InGaAs which is embedded in a polymer optical waveguide which is deposited on a Si substrate is presented, thus realizing the goal of three separate, independently optimized materials for the waveguide, substrate, and PD. The dark current and photocurrent produced by the evanescent field coupling from the optical waveguide into the embedded MSM PD are shown Measured dark and photocurrent were 60.6 nA and 1.2 /spl mu/A at 5 v, respectively. The coupling efficiency was estimated based on the measured responsivity and photocurrent of the thin film MSM PD and the launched optical power was calculated using a mode matching approach through FIMMWAvE software from Photon design. The estimated coupling efficacy from the input optical waveguide to the embedded MSM PD was 71.74%.

A 6.5 kv IGBT with wide safe operation area (SOA) for the high voltage inverter application is presented. The correlation between turn off energy (E/sub off/) and collector-emitter voltage (v/sub CE/) in PT (punch through)-IGBT is not linear. As Eoff rapidly increases at any v/sub CE/, Eoff becomes larger. A new IGBT makes that correlation linear by a new design concept: light punch through (LPT) concept. Blocking voltage more than rating voltage of 6.5 kv is easily satisfied at Tj=-40/spl sim/125/spl deg/C by the optimization of n-layer thickness (tn-) and resistivity (/spl rho/n-), and LPT concept. Moreover, this new IGBT chip has achieved wide SOA that RBSOA is Jc=140A/cm/sup 2/ at v/sub CE/=4.3kv and Tj=125/spl deg/C and short circuit SOA is t/sub w/=13 /spl mu/s at v/sub CE/=4.3 kv and Tj=125/spl deg/C by optimizing p-well layer.
