The work presented here shows a compact lens system that demonstrates improved imaging quality performance while focusing on as-built performance and design for manufacturing. Using Zemax, we consider an approach for optimizing for as-built performance and incorporate the approach into the design process for a mobile phone camera. The optimized design consists of 6 plastic aspheric lenses, an infrared glass filter, and a 12 MP CMOS image sensor. The optical system demonstrates high-resolution imaging and has a field-of-view of 87.6 degrees, an F-number of 2.0, a maximum distortion of less than 2.5%, and a total track length of 6.630 mm.

Ball Aerospace is building the Cryogenic Telescope Assembly (CTA) for the Space InfraRed Telescope Facility (SIRTF) project and stray light control is a critical part of this effort. The heliocentric orbit where the Sun is never allowed to illuminate the CTA and the Earth is relatively far away is a key feature for stray light control. Mirror and paint BRDFs were measured at various SIRTF wavelengths in order to provide inputs for the stray light models. Stray light from telescope self emission, a distant point source, and the galaxy were analyzed. The design ensures that stray light will be less than 21% of the celestial background at all SIRTF wavelengths.

An original method to enable the exact solution for the noncemented two-lens objective by means of any number of simultaneous non-linear equations is described. The method is limited to spherical surfaces without decentrations. Separations and refractive indices of glasses are fixed. Ail curvatures of surfaces are indirectly determined in the final stage. The typical meridional aperture aberrations deal with aplanatic and achromatic conditions. Essence of the method relies on formulation functions which contain trigonometric expressions and are nested up to certain depth. The method uses the advanced professional mathematical software which is indispensable for serving the non-linear system of equations. Numerical examples confirm the helpfulness of the method.

In this paper, combining refractive and diffractive effects, a new kind of infrared lenses with wavelength 10.6 mu m was designed and produced for CO2 laser material processing. This refractive-diffractive lens (RDL) converts a CO2 laser beam into the rectangular shape with light intensity distribution in the concave shape at x-direction. A method which employs input aperture division and geometrical transformation technique for obtaining a better initial phase distribution of the iteration is presented. The experimental results show that the desired shape of the output light beam was obtained with a high efficiency in energy utilization.

The Hobby-Eberly Telescope uses a ii-meter diameter F/1.45 segmented spherical primary mirror. A spherical mirror of this size generates large amounts of spherical aberration. To be used successfully in a tilted optical Arecibo type telescope, the spherical aberration needs to be corrected. This means that tracking of astronomical targets is achieved through moving a tracker optical package which imposes somewhat severe packaging constraints. Given these packaging constraints, novel methods must be employed to correct the aberrations with the Spherical Aberration Corrector contained in the moving hacker optical package. The paper reviews the pertinent requirements, constraints and the resultant design of the Hobby-Eberly Telescope Four Mirror Spherical Aberration Corrector.

Analytic definition of the aspheric surfaces is done away with and numerical solution of nonlinear difference equations called Aspheric Intrinsic Equations (AIE) is implemented instead. By this way, tri-different wavelength could be used for same system and same scene. This paper describes our experience with global lens optimization using algorithms that can modify an existing lens construction in an optimal way or create an entirely new construction. The binary-search method assembles lens elements according to the bits in a binary number, ensuring that all combinations of power are tested, while the saddle-point method can either add elements to a starting lens or start from scratch. The latter algorithm also naturally leads to a method of removing an element in an optimum way, which can sometimes simplify a lens with no loss of quality.

An all acousto-optic infrared scene projector (IRSP) has been developed for use in evaluating thermal-imaging guidance systems at the Kinetic Kill Vehicle Hardware-in-the-Loop Simulator (KHILS) facility located at Elgin AFB, Florida. The IRSP is a laser source based projector incorporating Scophony illumination and scanning methods to produce 96 X 96 pixel multi-wavelength images at very high frame rates (400 Hz). The IRSP is composed of five functionally similar optical trains, four of which are fed with a different `color' infrared laser. The separate scenes from each optical train are then combined and projected simultaneously into the imaging guidance system.

The display of 3D images containing all the depth cues required by the human vision system can be achieved using a reconfigurable Computer Generated Hologram (CGH) with high pixel count. A technique which has been developed to produce CGH's with the required number of pixels, and at video refresh rates, is known as Active Tiling((TM)) (AT). At the heart of an AT system is a set of replication optics which produces multiple images of a Spatial Light Modulator (SLM) onto the CGH. The design of two alternative optical systems for generating a 5x5 tiled array of de-magnified images of a single object is discussed. Results are presented from a 4-channel AT system which has recently been built and demonstrated.
