The properties of optical surfaces generated by diffraction are studied analyzing the changes in the curvature function of the boundary condition. The study leads to establish a classification for the optical fields as elliptical, hyperbolical or parabolic. The elliptical regions are separated from hyperbolic regions by a region of parabolic type, which corresponds to optical focusing regions. The main result of the analysis leads us to describe and to control bifurcations and vortices effects allowing to geometrize and to control the topological properties of the optical field. For this feature is important to control the geometry of the parabolic region, obtained by controlling the curvature function in the boundary condition. The model is implemented experimentally applying a linear transformation in transmittances of zone plate type. The experimental results corroborate the theoretical predictions

In this paper we examine the third-order aberrations of the "generalized Offner" family of designs comprising three concentric mirrors, with the first and third mirrors being not necessarily identical in radius and including the possibility that the object might be displaced from the common centers of curvature. We develop analytic expressions relating the first-order and third-order properties of the system to the radii of the three mirrors and to the object distance. Although one might expect a ring-field system to be relatively tolerant of field curvature, we show that the Petzval Sum affects the other aberrations in an extraordinary manner.

A strategy for optimizing both the on-axis and the off-axis performance of coherently (directly) coupled visual instruments is presented. The strategy draws on the recently published body of data regarding the influence of various individual Seidel aberration and aberration combinations on subjective contrast sensitivity and resolution tasks, as well as studies on the correlation between subjective image quality and objective instrumental figures of merit. An MTF-based metric allows both optimization and tolerancing to be performed in a coherent manner that is based on experimental results of the effects of aberrations.

We have designed a fisheye lens with a field of view of 190 degrees and F# of 2.8 The diameter of the circular image plane is designed to fit within the width of the image sensor plane, so that a 190 degrees horizontal field of view can be obtained. It is composed of 8 spherical lens elements and the overall length is 35mm from the first lens surface to the image sensor plane. This fisheye lens operates simultaneously in the visible and the near infrared wavelength regions.

This paper describes a real time optimization method for optical systems. We examine the features of the Global-Opt optical ray tracing program, which has been developed to provide the optical engineer with interactive optimization capabilities. We illustrate the programs main features through the results of design study into a an F/1.0 camera for use in a planned Astronomical spectrograph This instrument is the High Resolution optical Spectrograph (HROS), which is part of the international Gemini project to build twin 8m aperture telescopes towards the end of the decade. The Global-Opt program allows the optical engineer to ray trace, in batch mode, up to 1 million optical systems over a period of several hours. Once complete, the engineer can explore the properties (i.e. aberrations) of these million systems in real time in order to locate the most suitable one for a particular task This is achieved by transferring the multi-dimensional optimization problem into 3 spatial dimensions in which all the aberrations and variable parameters are represented in a 'landscape' visualization. The user is then able to interact with these moving visualizations in order to attempt system optimization. Animation of these visualizations helps the user identify any features present, which directly represent specific attributes of the design form under investigation. We have noted that these moving features resemble water waves, hence the interactive optimization process described here is made analogous to 'surfing'.

Staring infrared imagers have multiple surfaces within the integrated Dewar assembly which contribute to non-traditional Narcissus artifacts. Static non-uniformity correction is insufficient to remove dynamic Narcissus artifacts caused by moving focus or zoom groups. Dynamic Narcissus artifacts often manifest as rings apparent to the human eye, although they may lie near the noise floor of the imager. Moreover, strong field curvature of the Narcissus can complicate diagnosis using paraxial methods. We compare a simple pupil ghost metric to traditional Narcissus metrics and present an experimental case study illustrating how the metric can be used during optimization to eliminate the effect.

Beamsplitter is one kind of optical element or apparatus which change one light beam into two or more light beams, and it has been widely used in optical technique. We have ever introduced a series ordinary beamsplitter made by using birefringent crystal. In this article we will introduce a series new type beamsplitter, that is adjustable displacement parallel beamsplitter. We can change one light beam into two parallel light beams, and the displacement between the two parallel light beams can be adjusted by using this type beamsplitter. According to the property of the two parallel light beams, the beamspliter can be divided into two kinds. The first dind, the two light beams both are polarization light beams;the second kind, the two light beams both are nonpolarization light beams. We have discussed their structure character, working principle and using specification in this article.

In optical design, the designer's experience is critical. Indeed, an experienced optical designer will often choose a better starting point for optimization than an inexperienced one. Most of the time, lens design software use a local optimization algorithm, which is why the starting point is so important to get an excellent optical system. We present here an alternative to the classical optical design method and a solution to reduce the impact of the designer's experience. Our alternative couples the Simultaneous Multiple Surfaces (SMS) method, introduced by Benitez and Minano with optimization in Zemax OpticStudio. The SMS method is a direct construction method of optical systems without optical aberrations for as many field points as the system contains surfaces. This method can deal with both aspheric and freeform optical systems depending on the dimension of the method implemented. Our implementation of the SMS method can design optical systems with three surfaces. We use the SMS method to define a freeform system with an F-number of 0.85. Then, we use this fast freeform system as a starting point to perform further optimization in Zemax OpticStudio. Finally, we achieve to design two diffraction-limited freeform systems, one over a square field of view of +/- 30 degrees and another over a rectangular field of view of +/- 33 degrees x +/- 26 degrees.

Holographic display elements (HOEs) with a high diffraction efficiency and size enlargement have been developed since 2019. To achieve high brightness and low haze, unprecedented optical systems have been proposed with a uniform chief ray angle of 0 degrees in the x-section and 70 degrees in the y-section of the HOEs. A 360 degrees cylindrical holographic screen display (CHSD) was obtained by providing a large tilt to the surface shape near the optical axis. This was done using a first-order odd aspherical coefficient for the light flux from a refractive optical system (RO). A flat holographic screen display (FHSD) is a compact, high-performance display that uses three decentered and tilted freeform mirrors to route light flux from the RO in a ball-like form. Prototyping also proposes the possibility of an augmented reality system that takes advantage of the high transparency. The design for further miniaturization while maintaining optical performance was also discussed, in which the size of the first mirror was reduced by reducing the half-field angle of the RO to approximately 6 degrees. Furthermore, by increasing the negative power of the second mirror, the small size could be maintained The size of the last mirror was dependent on the screen size and could not be reduced. By laying down the posture of this mirror, we were able to halve the size reduction in the vertical direction. In this paper, lens designs for CHSDs and FHSDs are reported. The potential of this display is also discussed.

Correlation between computational models and corresponding experimental data of stray light produced by unwanted diffraction orders of diffractive lenses is described. It is shown that the attractive scaler model under Fresnel approximation does not agree with experimental data. The validity of Fresnel approximation for multi-order focusing optics is derived to explain the limitation of the scaler approach. Geometrical models with both coherent and incoherent summation of each diffractive orders coupled with efficiency estimation is used with success. The model takes into account the local diffraction efficiency and also of the number of diffractive orders supported locally by the structure. This geometrical optics model can be used in standard optical design software. Therefore it may be recommended as an additional tool for stray light analysis at the design stage of hybrid refractive/diffractive optical systems. In a second part, the impact of unwanted diffraction orders when diffractive optics is used in visible imaging systems is discussed. Several experimental observations about the use of plastic refractive/diffractive lens in relation to different fabrication process used to build the lens are also discussed. From those observations, we recommend an approach to reduce the stray light produced by the diffractive lens. In conclusion, a serious stray light analysis is mandatory in the design of visible imaging systems using diffractive lenses.
