The purpose of this paper is to introduce the concept of a Locking Lorentz Slide. Lorentz Slide actuators, which are based on the Lorentz force principal of physics and are also called Voice Coils, have earned wide-spread. use in the aerospace industry because of their superior performance (precision, force, stroke, wide temperature range including cryogenics, reliability and compactness). NASA has particularly favored these devices in their space telescopes and scientific instruments. Up to now "Voice Coils" have had to keep power on to hold position, which is limiting in many space applications. NASA, however, has found what promises to be a simple, innovative work-around with its Locking Lorentz Slide approach. This paper is an introduction to that concept and its possibilities, so, in this paper, the Locking Lorentz Slide is described, its principles of operation explained and its expected performance given. Since NASA is embarking on a development effort for this actuator more technical papers detailing hardware, tests and detailed analysis will follow.

In the paper, we design a focal adjustable flashlight, which can provide the spotlight and the wide-angle illumination in different modes. For most users, they two request two illumination modes. In such two modes, one is high density energy of the light pattern and the other is the uniform light pattern in a wide view field. In designing the focal adjustable flashlight, we first build a precise optical model for the high-power LED produced by CREE Inc. in mid-field verification to make sure the accuracy of our simulation. Typically, the lens is useful to be the key component of the adjustable flashlight, but the optical efficiency is low. Here, we introduce a concept of so-called total internal refraction (TIR) lens into the design of flashlight. By defocusing the TIR lens, the flashlight can quickly change the beam size and energy density to various applications. We design two segments of the side of the TIR lens so that they can be applied to the two modes, and the flashlight provides a high optical efficiency for each mode. The illuminance of the center of light pattern at a distance of 2 m from the lamp is also higher than using the lens in the spotlight and wide-angle illumination. It provides good lighting functions for users.

The problem of developing the lateral surfaces of a 3D object can arise in item inspection using automated imaging systems. In an industrial environment, these control systems typically work at high rate and they have to assure a reliable inspection of the single item. For compactness requirements it is not convenient to utilise three or four CCD cameras to control all the lateral surfaces of an object. Moreover it is impossible to mount optical components near the object if it is placed on a conveyor belt. The paper presents a system that integrates on a single CCD picture the images of both the frontal surface and the lateral surface of an object. It consists of a freeform, lens mounted in front of a CCD camera with a commercial lens. The aim is to have a good magnification of the lateral surface, maintaining a low aberration level for exploiting the pictures in an image processing software. The freeform lens, made in plastics, redirects the light coming from the object to the camera lens. The final result is to obtain on the CCD: - the frontal and lateral surface images, with a selected magnification (even with two different values for the two images);- a gap between these two images, so an automatic method to analyse the images can be easily applied. A simple method to design the freeform lens is illustrated. The procedure also allows to obtain the imaging system modifying a current inspection system reducing the cost.

We report the design and fabrication of Hybrid Dichroic Mirrors (HDM) for the separation and the recombination of white laser beam by using small sized flat plate far a small Laser Projection Display (LPD) system. This small sized laser projection display system is consist of a white laser, hybrid dichroic mirrors, 3-channel AOM and a beam scanning part. Red, green and blue light beams are separated by one flat plate dichroic mirror and also modulated by the 3-channel AOM, are recombined to one beam by another flat plate dichroic mirror. These hybrid dichroic mirrors are designed to measure the separation and recombination of s-polarized light beams of 647, 515, 488nm wavelength from the white laser. Key element of the mirror design includes the quarter wavelength multilayers optimized to provide the best performance for the separation and recombination of light beams. The calculated values of the transmittance, which are pass through the hybrid dichroic mirror, are 95% for each separated/recombined color beams. The measured values of transmittance are over 90%.

In this paper, we proposed a new configuration of concentrator in solar PV system. A special optical system in the concentrator used in focusing sun light to solar cell is proposed, the system compose of an aspherical surface and a specific diffusing surface. The uniform-squared light pattern is obtained on the solar cell, the shape and size of light pattern can be modulated by the parameters of the diffusing surface. In order to decrease the weight of the lens, the concentrator in Fresnel lens type is built at last. Besides, the optical efficiencies formed by the aspherical concentrator and Fresnel concentrator are about 92% and 77%, the concentrations are about 720mW/mm(2) and 640mW/mm(2), and the acceptance angles are about 0.35 degrees and 0.30 degrees, respectively. The tolerances in assembling the component of the concentrator are also discussed in detail.

A free-form lens system design is proposed for short distance projection. Free-form surface shape and non-rotational symmetrical structure provide us more freedoms for optimization. The catadioptric structure is also used to reduce the overall length of the whole system. The designed projector lens system consists of two parts. The first part is a rotationally symmetrical lens system which corrects the basic aberrations. The second part contains a free-form lens and a reflector which correct the distortion and other aberrations. We achieve 55inch projected image size at a display screen which is 300mm away from the lens system. The maximum distortion for all fields at all distances is less than 3%.

Aspherical glass or plastic lenses are usually adapted in the camera module of handheld phone. Recently, slimmer cameras are required according to reducing thickness of handheld phone. In this paper, we present an ultra slim camera module using multiple freeform off-axis imaging lenses. New optical concept of multiple lens system introduces the planar optics with freeform. shaped aspherical lens surface on the wafer, which can achieve the thickness of 50% compared to the conventional symmetric lens system. In order to achieve the resolution specification, we separate the field of view in camera module. As the result, two inverted images are produced on a same imaging sensor and the acquired inverted images are processed by photo stitching algorithm so as to combine them. Finally, in order to verify the new imaging system, we manufacture the new slim lens through the LJV embossing replication process. We found the new imaging system is feasible for VGA resolution and it can be expandable to the high resolution system.

Progressive addition lenses (PAL) are used to compensate presbyopia, which is induced by losing accommodation of elder eyes. These eyes need different optical power provided by eye glasses while watching objects at different distance. A smaller optical power is required in further distance and a larger one in nearer zone. A progressive addition lens can provides different power requirements in one piece of lens. This paper introduces a whole process of PAL production, from design, fabrication, to measurement. The PAL is designed by optimizing NURBS surface. Parameters of merit function are adjusted to design lenses with different specifications. The simulation results confirm that the power distributes as expected and cylinders are controlled under an acceptable level. Besides, sample lenses have been produced by injecting polycorbonate to the molds. Finally, Ultra Accuracy 3D Profilemeter is used to measure the sample PALs. Practical examinations shows that our designs are achievable and feasible in practice use.

The objective of this research program was the development of the technology for the industrial manufacturing of HOEs for technical applications such as: holographic solar concentrators for utilization in photovoltaic energy conversion and solar photochemistry, and integrated holographic stacks for daylighting, glazing and shading in buildings. Some of the fabricated HOEs exhibit apertures in the order of 8 square meters. The accomplished technology facilitates the continuous fabrication of the holographic films on glass or plastic substrata. The standard holographic material we use for the fabrication of HOEs is dichromated gelatin (DCG) on glass or plastic film (PET) substrata The dichromated gelatin layer could be prepared with different compositions to accommodate the desired exposures and chemical processing procedures. At present we manufacture holographic plates on glass substrata in sizes of up to 1 meter square. The holographic film on plastic substratum is 20 cm wide and could be made in lengths of hundredths of meters. The inexpensive fabrication of such large formats is attained by automation of the entire process: film manufacturing, hologram copying, development and test. We present in this paper the design considerations and the developed manufacturing procedures. These comprise the fabrication of large format reflective holograms for concentrating mirrors and the copying of transmissive holograms, such as gratings and lenses, using in-plane contact copying in checkerboard arrangement or rotating drum continuous copying onto an endless plastic film.

These days, nothing lasts very long, and things often change for the better, but there are sure things in our community, such as this annual event, which has been going on for 25 years. The first edition in 2000 of the current developments in Lens design and optical Systems engineering conference took place during International Symposium on optical science and technology, 30 July - 4 August 2000 in San Diego. Over 45 oral presentations and ten posters were presented. The chairs were Robert E. Fischer, Warren J. Smith, R. Barry Johnson, and William H. Swantner. The proceeding was numbered 4093 and 24 years later the number is 12666 (2023). This paper looks back on the great moments of our conference, its speakers, the subjects that have come and gone, and those that have remained.
