We present an overview of the pros and cons of using GPUs in opticaldesign software. While GPUs can run multiple calculations in parallel, that parallelization comes with a price. We will discuss the trade-offs that allow GPUs to run up to thousands of cores in parallel and how those trade-offs effect the use of GPUs in opticaldesign software. In particular, we review the use of GPUs in several steps of design calculations, including ray-tracing and computationally expensive steps such as calculating Huygens integrals.

Projection systems comprising micromechanical. scanning mirrors are a promising approach for information display of any kind. If combined with advanced laser diodes as light sources, ultra-compact projection heads can be realized, as it will be shown in this contribution. Besides the laser, key component of the system is a special MEMS device, a two-dimensional resonant micro scanning mirror. The laser beam formed by collimator optics is directed onto the micro scanning mirror. Then, the reflected beam describes a highly complicated Lissajous figure on the projection screen with flare angles of up to 20 degrees. By driving the mirror and electrically modulating the intensity of the laser beam in a synchronous manner, projection of images can be achieved. Advanced techniques that guarantee improved image quality and allow compensation of artifacts because of relative movement between projection head, screen, and human observer will be described. Based on these principles, several optoelectronic systems have been designed. A monochrome projection head that incorporates the laser diode, optics and the micro mirror could be reduced to a volume of 15mm x 7 mm x 5mm. A slightly larger head is attached to a laser unit with red, green, and blue lasers via glass optical fiber for projection of full color images and video streams. All systems have VGA (640 x 480 pixels) resolution. They operate with 8 bit color depth per pixel and 50 frames per second. These key features in combination with the miniaturized size allow their use for a broad range of applications.

Hybrid optics offer a valuable aberration correction tool for the lens designer. However, careful consideration must be given to the calculation of the optical performance during the design process, and to the practical implementation of the elements if the potential benefits are to be realised in practice. optical performance can be accurately assessed by tracing multiple diffraction orders. It may be particularly important to utilise such a technique if, for example, the image-forming bundles sample a small number of diffractive zones. This situation is examined in detail.

New catadioptric objectives have been developed with large bandwidths in the DUV, high numerical apertures (NAs), and small size. This can be achieved using a single glass material. designs are specifically optimized for loose alignment tolerances and ease of manufacturability. Applications include broad band DUV imaging and high resolution immersion imaging for industrial microscopy and life sciences.

Using the concept of matrix theory for lens design, a triplet lens can be replaced by a singlet lens which has an equivalent system matrix without changing its optical performance. Then, using third order Siedel's first aberration coefficient of the singlet lens is equal to zero, and the focal length and the physical length of the triplet lens are kept constant as constraints, an algebraic technique for optimizing a triplet lens is derived. Results show that this new optimizing technique is more effective than other conventional techniques for optimizing a triplet lens in the case of plane waves.

The Next Generation Sky Survey (NGSS) Telescope is a spaceborne cryogenic optical telescope with four channels covering the wavelength range 3.5 to 23 microns. The 0.5 m aperture telescope is based on a modified three mirror afocal design, with a scan mirror at the exit pupil compensating for the spacecraft motion. After the scan mirror, the light is spectrally split and focussed by three refractive camera systems onto four detector arrays. The nominal opticaldesign exceeds the requirement of diffraction limited performance at 8 microns wavelength over the 1 degree by 0.5 degree field of regard.

The optical system of an optical rotary encoder is presented. The requirements of the optics system are given and their effects on opticaldesign decisions are discussed, Steps taken to insure stable operation over a -40 degrees C to +85 degrees C temperature range are presented. designing for manufacturing toleraces is discussed. A novel application of a fiber illuminator LED as a short-distance collimated source is shown to be an acceptable low-cost alternative to a laser diode. The importance of effective plastic element employment in low-cost, mass-production optical systems is demonstrated.

Modern cine lenses require a high degree of aberration correction over a large and ever expanding image size. At low to medium volume production levels, these highly corrected designs also require a workable tolerance set and compensation scheme for successful manufacture. In this paper we discuss the design and manufacture of cine lenses with reference to currentdesigns both internal and in the patent literature and some experience in design, tolerancing and manufacturing these lenses in medium volume production.

The task of this research project is to define the extent of applicability of such 3D self-manufacture approach to the production of optical fastenings. The resulting lack of equipment, to be used for demonstration of simple experiments, which would be both competitive in performance and cheap to produce, led to the decision to research opportunities for self-manufacturing.

Based on scale diffraction theory, binary phase gratings are designed and the effect of fabrication errors on the diffraction efficiency and uniformity is discussed. The theoretical and numerical analysis shows that (0, non-(pi) ) grating is more sensitive to phase delay error than (0, (pi) ) grating. Patterning error is very complex to analyze, but we can give a maximum intensity deviation to the grating.
