Using the caustic merit function for plane waves incident upon a singlet lens, a comparison between the optical performance of the lens using an axial gradient index with spherical surfaces or aspheric surfaces with constant index material has been investigated. Results indicate that the use of an inhomogeneous medium for the lens material is more effective in the controlling aberrations than the use of aspheric surfaces for a similar lens.

A differential equation method is applied to the design of a three-mirror telescope. The resulting system is mostly free of spherical aberration, coma and astigmatism. From caustic theory and a generalization of the Coddington Equations, the Abbe sine condition and the constant optical path length condition, three coupled differential equations, one for each reflecting surface, are generated. A system which satisfies these conditions will have a high resolution over a wide field of view. Analysis of this application is presented as a comparison to a similar three-mirror telescope system produced by conventional optimization techniques.

The task of this research project is to define the extent of applicability of such 3D self-manufacture approach to the production of optical fastenings. The resulting lack of equipment, to be used for demonstration of simple experiments, which would be both competitive in performance and cheap to produce, led to the decision to research opportunities for self-manufacturing.

The optical design of a breadboard high resolution infrared spectrometer for the IRS instrument on the SIRTF mission is discussed. The spectrometer uses a crossed echelle grating configuration to cover the spectral region from 10 to 20 mu m with a resolving power of approximate to 600. The all reflective spectrometer forms a nearly diffraction limited image of the two dimensional spectrum on a 128 x 128 arsenic doped silicon area array with 75 mu m pixels. The design aspects discussed include, grating numerology, image quality, packaging and alignment philosophy.

Projection systems comprising micromechanical. scanning mirrors are a promising approach for information display of any kind. If combined with advanced laser diodes as light sources, ultra-compact projection heads can be realized, as it will be shown in this contribution. Besides the laser, key component of the system is a special MEMS device, a two-dimensional resonant micro scanning mirror. The laser beam formed by collimator optics is directed onto the micro scanning mirror. Then, the reflected beam describes a highly complicated Lissajous figure on the projection screen with flare angles of up to 20 degrees. By driving the mirror and electrically modulating the intensity of the laser beam in a synchronous manner, projection of images can be achieved. Advanced techniques that guarantee improved image quality and allow compensation of artifacts because of relative movement between projection head, screen, and human observer will be described. Based on these principles, several optoelectronic systems have been designed. A monochrome projection head that incorporates the laser diode, optics and the micro mirror could be reduced to a volume of 15mm x 7 mm x 5mm. A slightly larger head is attached to a laser unit with red, green, and blue lasers via glass optical fiber for projection of full color images and video streams. All systems have VGA (640 x 480 pixels) resolution. They operate with 8 bit color depth per pixel and 50 frames per second. These key features in combination with the miniaturized size allow their use for a broad range of applications.

We provide analytic formulas for fews aspheric terms either plano-convex or convex-plano aspheric lenses. These formulas are obtained considering an expansion in Taylor's series from exact caustic equation produced by aspheric lenses. A comparison between our method and numerical methods of design are presented, showing a well agreement in order to reduce the spherical aberration.

Recent developments in wireless communications have asked for new design methodologies in designing integrated circuits. We study the VLSI design challenges posed by new wireless applications and suggest possible solutions. High data-rate wireless applications demand a complex VLSI. An extension of the IS-95 based code division multiple access (CDMA) system with multi-channel architecture is being investigated and scrutinized by standards committee. We present a robust hardware architecture of the Viterbi decoder for high data-rate CDMA system.

A miniaturized instrument for systematic planetary mineralogy is presented, and the optical design of the component parts is discussed. The instrument combines the following capabilities: wide field color imaging, confocal imaging at two different resolution/range levels, reflectance spectroscopy in the 400-2500 nm region with a resolution of 10 nm, and Raman spectroscopy over 4000 cm(-1) with an average resolution of 3.3 cm(-1). The instrument can also serve as an expandable platform for adding fluorescence spectroscopy, or for examining samples from a distance of several meters while using the same spectrometer.

Due to increasing environmental limitations on the use of certain raw materials used to make optical glasses, there is now an economic desire to minimize the number of glasses used in lens design. This paper presents the results of a study to create a suggested universal catalogue that contains the minimum number of glasses needed to satisfy most possible lens designs. A nearly symmetric double Gauss lens is used in the glass selection process. As part of this study, the relationship between the error function and the number of glasses chosen is studied, and in addition, a glass range study is also carried out. Three different lens libraries were studied using the global optimization method and the most frequently chosen glasses were then compiled into the suggested universal glass catalogue. A suggested universal glass catalogue constructed from this study is presented.

A number of optical plastic materials are examined. The indices of refraction are measured in the visible and near-infrared spectral regions from 435.8 nm to 1052 mn. Some obtained data and Abbe constants are presented. The glass libraries of the optical design software packages are updated. The spherochromatic aberration balancing is analyzed during the all-plastic doublet and tripler synthesis for a working wavelengths interval from 600 nm to 900 nm. Two achromatic triplets are designed intended for NIR region. Three all-plastic 3X magnifiers are developed for NV goggles. The optical configurations are given. The aberration corrections are evaluated. The obtained optical performance is illustrated. Some conclusions for the trends in all-plastic optical design are drawn.
