A method of minimizing the optical distortion from gravity sag on a suspended large autocollimating flat mirror has been devised. This method consists of an inverted nine-point Hindle-Mount. A conventional Hindle-Mount is located underneath a sky-viewing mirror and is primarily under compression loads from the weight of the mirror. It is not suitable for the situation where the mirror is viewing the ground, since a mirror would tend to fall out of the mount when in an inverted position. The inverted Hindle-Mount design consists of bonded joints on the backside of the mirror that allow the mirror to be held or suspended above an object to be viewed. This ability is useful in optical setups such as a calibration test where a flat mirror is located above a telescope so that the telescope may view a known optic.

When gradient index rods (GI rods) were prepared by interfacial-gel copolymerization, the bulk polymerization caused serious shrinkage, which, in turn, resulted in inevitable defects. These defects in GI rods can be reduced by control of reaction conditions. Experimental results revealed that properly adjusting the reaction conditions such as concentrations of initiator, chain transfer agent, and/or temperature could reduce the viscosities of the reaction mixtures and could produce GI rods with a parabolic refractive index distribution.

Our study presents recent progress in modelling and performing lens optical design with metasurfaces. We developed semi-analytical models that recover the output phase, polarization, dispersion and group delay of various nanostructures. This enables the mixing of different nanostructures to obtain a target dispersion profile an interesting application of the model. These models can readily be implemented within optical design software such as Zemax and use the built-in optimization of optical design processes while avoiding time-consuming electrodynamics computation. We also introduce the metasurfaces to the analytical lens design framework. This enables us to analytically compute the phase profile of freeform metasurface doublet concerning particular ray conditions such as the Abbe Sine condition as we presented here.

The work presented here shows a compact lens system that demonstrates improved imaging quality performance while focusing on as-built performance and design for manufacturing. Using Zemax, we consider an approach for optimizing for as-built performance and incorporate the approach into the design process for a mobile phone camera. The optimized design consists of 6 plastic aspheric lenses, an infrared glass filter, and a 12 MP CMOS image sensor. The optical system demonstrates high-resolution imaging and has a field-of-view of 87.6 degrees, an F-number of 2.0, a maximum distortion of less than 2.5%, and a total track length of 6.630 mm.

Digital engineering technologies are transforming long-stagnant development processes by applying the tremendous advancements in Information Technology (IT) to classical engineering tasks such as design, analysis, and fabrication of space-flight instrument structures. Generative design leverages developments in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Cloud computing to enable a paradigm shift in the design process, allowing the engineer to focus on defining the requirements and objectives of the design while AI generates optimized designs which comply with the input requirements. Digital Manufacturing allows these complex lightweight designs to be efficiently manufactured by directly fabricating from the resulting 3D models. The development of these two Digital engineering technologies realizes significant mass savings while simultaneously reducing structure development time from months to days. This paper describes the development of the Evolved Structures process applying these technologies to spaceflight optical instrument structures including an example demonstrating greater than 10x reduction in development time/cost and greater than 3x improvement in structural performance.

In many optical experimental systems, an achromatic 1/4 wavelength retarder is needed to satisfy experiment condition. This can be fulfilled using a rhomb prism which has a nearly constant refractive index in the working wavelength range. To make the easy use of the prism in the optical system and to avoid the problem of central beam deviation, one type of the prism having three total internal reflection faces can be designed to have the total retarding angle equal to 90 degrees. Though the angle can be relativly easily calculated in principle, the size and optical opening window of the prism depend an the practical and optimum geometric design. In this paper, we will give a few examples of geometric design by taking different size parameters into consideration. We have made the prisms and put them into the application of measuring the magneto-optical Kerr ellipticity with success. Detailed calculation and error reduction in the design are also given.

Bio-inspired optical design can be described as a conscious decision in the design process to take inspiration from physical adaptation that were brought up by natural selection. The usual goal is to introduce non-conventional techniques or material in order to achieve better performance or novel applications. However, when the target is to imitate closely the form-factor, appearance and optical properties of a biological system, new requirements are added to the design process and new problems arises. In this paper, we will expose the design of an optical system that draws most requirements from both the optical properties and the form-factor of the human eye. However, contrary to human eye models, the main requirements for this project is to make a realistic design which can be assembled as a prototype. The design process will be laid out, by firstly introducing system requirements and various performance targets that comes from the bio-inspired design. The constraints associated with using entrance pupil's appearance as a requirement will be presented. This paper will also specifically be looking at distortion as a solution for modulating resolution throughout the field of view and as a tool to aid in those novel problems.

The optical design and the expected performances of a multi-band imaging system will be presented The instrument is to be operated in a low earth orbit in a pushbroom scanning mode. It has 15 spectral bands with the wavelength range extending from 0.45 mu m to 10.7 mu m. The instrument comprises a single mechanically cooled focal plane, a 36 cm aperture, wide field of view off-axis three mirror anastigmatic telescope, and an on-board calibration subsystem. The design has near diffraction limited performance for ail spectral bands from visible to long wavelength infrared (LR). It has high throughput and low polarization sensitivity. To minimize the background noise at long wavelength infrared (LWIR) a cold stop is located at the exit pupil to achieve 100% cold shielding.

Non-imaging integrators which can be used for laser beam homogenization in materials processing with excimer laser radiation are analysed with regards to geometrical and statistical optics. A model for the transversal degree of coherence of the laser radiation is presented in order to estimate the performance of the integrating devices for the partially coherent excimer laser radiation. This is necessary for a more relevant design of those elements than a design by geometric optical means only. The concept of non-imaging integrators is enhanced by separating the multifaceted element from the focusing lens. This separation provides more flexibility in the processing distance of the optical system. A further enhancement is the combination of such a system with an imaging lens in order to create a system which produces a top hat fluence distribution with variable size for materials processing applications.

An ultra-fast focal reducer design originally intended for use with spherical primary mirrors (published in optical engineering, February, 2003), has been adapted for use as a retro-fit for existing telescopes of similar to2m pupil diameter that have aspheric mirrors. The focal reducer has only one aspheric surface, located at the aperture stop, and can provide speeds up to f/0.75 while maintaining a wide field with pixel-limited resolution and a broad spectral passband. Examples have been computed for Ritchie-Chretien, Dall-Kirkham and Cassegrain systems, and for use at the prime focus of mirrors with non-zero conic constants.
