We develop a method for the calculation of the integrals arising in the diffraction theory of aberrations. This method is developed from in a previous one based in the division of the diffracting aperture in semiperiodic zones, which enabled the exact calculation of the Point-Spread Function of an optical system. By a careful analysis of the integration process and of the properties of the semiperiodic zones, we develop a set of formulae that give an approximate value of the result of the diffraction integrals. This permits to avoid the numerical calculation of the integrals, which is a computationally intensive procedure and enables a substantial reduction of the computation times. The method has been tested on aberration-free optical systems and real optical systems and has shown a good accuracy, although some minor problems require further investigation.

2,3-dimercaptoethylthiopropanethiol (B-thiol), 2,2,2'-dimercaptoethyl sulfide dimethacrylate (MESDMA), and 2-phenylthioethyl thiomethacrylate (MEPSMA) were prepared, which structures were confirmed by IR and (HNMR)-H-1 spectroscopy. A series of homopolymer resin (such as, B-thiol/MDI) and copolymer resin (such as MESDMA/St (25 similar to 50%), and MESDMA/St/MEPSMA) were further prepared, which optical and mechanical properties were much better than thoes of the ordinary resins. The studies and development of such optical resins would be expected to meet the need of optical resin markets.

The current trend for higher resolution and sensitivity for Astronomy and Earth Observation space missions is leading to larger entrance apertures for future optical payloads, often requiring challenging and ultra-stable optical performances driving the instrument design and implementation. The level of complexity for such large systems requires a multidisciplinary approach and technological developments in cross-sectorial areas such as optics, structures, pointing accuracy, control, mechanisms. We present here a range of ESA R&D developments related to future large ultra-stable optical instrument architectures, providing perspectives on the identification of enabling technologies in view of current and future optical missions as well as and a wayforward to maturity for implementation within potential future missions.

Several off-the-shelf optical lenses and lens components are available for use in the design of new optical systems. But there isn't a clear methodology on how effective there can be in a real optical device. It should be noted that the use of standard optical elements reduces the cost of the optical device, which is especially important for mass production. Ease and speed of replacement are also important parameters for the usability of standard optical elements. That is why the extensive use of purchased optical elements in optical devices will simplify their operation and improve the convenience of maintenance. Selecting purchased optical components of an optical circuit is not an easy task and requires certain skills. The main problem is that the optical design stage is divided into two parts. The first part is the creation of an optical circuit from non-standard (custom) optical components with optical characteristics close to cataloging lenses. The second part is to adjust the position of the optical component to satisfy specification requirements. This process sometimes required several iterations. For the process of fitting distances in an optical system to be successful, it is necessary to take into account the properties of optical glasses such as refractive index and dispersion when choosing lens components, in addition to their focal lengths and geometrical dimensions. It should be noted that in the catalogs of optical components there are optical parameters of lenses, and also glass parameters of the lens. This is essential information for lens designers to substitution the custom optical element for the off-the-shelf lens. Problems that arise with such a replacement are based on a limited number of standard lenses and lens components. Recently, the display device was developed to apply to the transparency display device(TDD), but the TDD was no brightness. The purpose of this paper was introduced a double layer optical film to improve luminance of the TDD. The film was doped micro metal oxide particles to increase the effect of scattering and refraction, and the micro structure was fabricated between the top and bottom film to enhance the light into the TDD. This research provided a transparent double layer optical film. The transparency of the film was achieved to 70 %, and the brightness efficiency up to 60 %.

Freeform surfaces provide more degrees of freedom for design of optical systems, and enhance the ability of compensation and correction aberrations. Freeform surfaces are of advantage to balance the unsymmetrical aberrations, especially for the wide-field off-axis optical systems. This paper focus on an off-axis reflective optical system, which focal length is 550mm, F# is 6.5 and field of view (FOV) is 76 degrees. The system adopts some freeform surfaces. We discuss the problems we noticed in processes of design, manufacture, measurement and alignment, and the solutions. At last, the periodical research result and the expected performance are given.

Nowadays, the development of the space apparatus with high optical characteristics still stays the important task. The simplest systems which can provide the required characteristics for remote monitoring from the space are the three-mirror systems. It can be shown that in many cases, classical three-mirror systems have critical value of obscuration that leads to decreasing of resolution. Using off-axis field of view in the systems provides the way to avoid the obscuration influence. We present a technique for designing the three-mirror telescope objectives based on the systems with axial symmetry with an off-axis field of view.

Over the past twenty years numerous papers and patents have reported on the design of infrared zoom lenses for a variety of civilian and military applications. The vast majority of these lenses have been afocal 8-12 mu m zoom lenses with magnification ratios of five to twenty. With the advancement of 3-5 mu m staring focal plane array technology a growing demand has emerged for a compact imaging 3-5 mu m zoom lens. To meet this demand a variety of such zoom lenses have been designed which support image formats of over 10 mm diagonal. In this paper the preliminary design of a high magnification 3-5 mu m zoom lens is described. Infrared system modeling, detailed lens performance and manufacturing issues are reviewed.

A new way to evaluate the diffraction efficiency of the diffractive optical element (DOE), which serves as an aberration corrector in an infrared hybrid optical system, is proposed. The directly measured ensquared energy of the hybrid optical system is obtained through an experimental test. Then, the actual line spread function (LSF) of the system under test is measured, and the point spread function (PSF) is calculated from LSF based on the symmetric property of the system. The PSF is used to calculate the so-called derived ensquared energy. The ratio of the directly measured and the derived ensquared energy, defined as the diffraction efficiency of the DOE, represents the fraction of the energy focused onto the image point over the total input energy on the image plane, because the energy loss is caused by the scattering from the DOE corrector. The hybrid optical system, experimental setup, evaluation procedure, and the final results will be presented.

We present a method for measuring an optical system's effective focal length with a single mode fiber array and a wedge prism. Light emitted by the input fiber near the focal plane is collimated, reflected back in two angularly separated beams, and detected by the output fibers in the auto-collimation configuration. Measurement precision of a Micron can be achieved due to the precision of fiber spacing and the position sensitivity of single-mode coupling. Absolute accuracy depends on factors such as optical design configuration, metrology, aberrations, and environmental control, and can be better than 10 micron. By varying input wavelength and field angle, this technique can be utilized to precisely characterize chromatic dispersion and distortion of the optics. Furthermore, because the technique only requires compact opto-mechanical accessories and electronic apparatus, it can be readily carried out on large optical systems in the field.
