Most imaging systems today include a mosaic detector array in the focal plane. optical designers of astronomical telescopes typically produce a design that yields a superb on-axis aerial image in the focal plane, and detector effects are included only in the analysis of the final system performance. Aplanatic optical designs (corrected for spherical aberration and coma) are widely considered to be superior to non-aplanatic designs. However, there is little merit in an aplanatic design for wide-field applications because one needs to optimize some field-weighted-average measure of resolution over the desired operational field-of-view (OFOV). Furthermore, when used with a mosaic detector array in the focal plane, detector effects eliminate the advantage of the aplanatic design even at small field angles. For wide fields-of-view, the focal plane is frequently despaced to balance field curvature with defocus thus obtaining better overall performance. We will demonstrate that including detector effects in the design process results in a different optimal (non-aplanatic) design for each OFOV that is even superior to an optimally despaced aplanatic design.

Satellite-based remote sensing offers the best opportunity for studying the properties of atmospheric aerosols and their radiative effects on the global scale over extended periods Tropospheric aerosols represent the largest uncertainty in predicting the radiative forcing of climate (IPCC, 2001). A key question is whether atmospheric aerosols contribute to warming or cool the climate system. Since the sign of direct radiative forcing is controlled by the ability of aerosol particles to absorb light, the information on the single scattering albedo of different aerosol types and its variations with aerosol lifecycles is clearly very desirable. Furthermore, the wavelength-dependent values of single scattering albedo from the UV to IR are important in retrieving aerosol optical depth from satellites passive remote sensing and for climate modeling. We describe the design of a space-borne polarimeter that was derived from the key science requirements. The performance of this candidate polarimeter, operating in the UV/VIS/NIR spectral regions, is described. The optical design form and various optical performance parameters, including transmittance calculations of the polarimeter's spectral channels showing the "leakage" of polarization states, as well as the degree of polarization as function of wavelength and field of view are presented for the various wavelength regions. An overview of the instrument performance and driving operational parameters is presented.

In every optical testing method, the time taken to process data, the precision of the results and the sensitivity are among the most relevant aspects to be taken into account when the viability of its implementation is been under consideration. An accuracy and sensitivity analysis of a topographer based on a conical null-screen with a semi-radial distribution of targets is presented. On the other hand, we proposed a custom evaluation algorithm in order to reduce the time in the calculation of the normal to the corneal surface. Finally, we perform some corneal topographical measurements.

A reflected-light confocal scanning optical microscope with circular scan line is described. For the horizontal scanning, the instrument uses a rotating dispersive prism embedded at the tip of a hollow motor shaft. The rotating hollow motor shaft accepts a polarized collimated laser beam and transforms it into a rotating beam, with a cone-shaped trajectory, on its exit from the prism. The rotating beam then passes through an inverted telescope and a quarter-wave plate before it is focused onto the specimen plane by a conventional microscope objective. To improve upon the ranging accuracy, a telecentric scan is maintained throughout the scan. The reflected light travels back through the same components until it is redirected by a beam splitter to pass through an analyzer and a pinhole before arriving at the detector. The use of the same optics for both illumination and imaging automatically satisfies the confocal requirement, and eliminates the need for a synchronizing mechanism. Also, the use of a rotating prism renders the system completely insensitive (for all practical purposes) to motor wobble.

Miniature optics are used in many applications and particularly in consumer optics for such products as webcams, mobile phones, automotive components, endoscopes, tablets, and many other connected devices. Mobile phone cameras are probably the ones that have driven the race for shorter TTL over the past 10 years. Ten years ago, cell phone cameras were composed of 3-4 optical plastic elements within one camera lens;today it takes more than 6 optical elements to obtain mega pixel resolution. But it is still not enough. The market has an insatiable appetite for greater optical performance. Consequently, the lens system has become more complex and now may require more optical elements with more complex optical functions. In this context, can the metasurface lens play a role? In this paper, we will try to address this question and discuss how metasurfaces promise to become a game changer in the consumer electronics market.

This paper proposes the design of an anastigmatic three-mirror telescope using freeform surfaces for the correction of spherical aberration, coma, astigmatism, and field curvature, allowing a wide field of view (FOV) and high resolution. For the structure of this telescope, it is proposed to use only two optical elements where the primary and tertiary mirrors are integrated into an only optical element and the secondary mirror in the other, thus achieving a considerable reduction in the difficulty of alignment and assembly. To achieve a high performance of the telescope, the system was decentered (off-axis design), avoiding the loss of energy due to the obscuration of the M-2 in the on-axis system. In addition, to solve the difficult access to the focus.

This paper proposes a new zoom lens design with intermediate image. The two 3x zoom lenses are independently designed and then cascaded to a 9x zoom lens. The concept of intermediate optics is applied in this paper in order to minimize size of front diameter and overall length. The final layout shows the proposed 9x zoom lens can effectively miniature the front diameter of lens about 44.25%.

This study presents a new method for selecting a pair of optical glass and housing material to achromatize and athermalize a lens system, by use of the factor of determination for material selection. To effectively obtain an optimum combination for materials, we newly propose the sequential material selection method by introducing the factor of determination for material selection, which depends on the level of contribution to correct these aberrations and the availability to be used as a suitable material. Even though there are many cases for material combinations, we can sequentially identify the best pair of glass and housing materials by checking the factor of determination. Using this design approach, we efficiently obtain an achromatic and athermal system through an optimum combination of materials, over the specified ranges in temperature and waveband.

Here, we consider one of the most important problems related to optimizing the performance data of a new acousto-optical spectrometer for the analysis of radio-astronomical signals. The main attention is paid to estimating two factors governing the dynamic range of that spectrometer. At first, we determine the influence of the acoustic attenuation along a large-aperture acousto-optical cell on potential levels of lobes in focal plane of the integrating lens and then describe capabilities of the incident light beam apodization for increasing the dynamic range of spectrometer. These studies lie in a line with the program of developing metrological equipment for Mexican Large Millimeter Telescope.

This work considers typical radiometers that measure the radiance of sources or of some surface (due to reflection). The most important thing in a radiometer is its optical cavity, which defines the solid angle of measurement. In case of instruments that use lenses, lens diameter and focal length define the solid angle. Radiometer design takes care that the solid angle subtended by the optical cavity be minor that the solid angle subtended by the source to be measured, however no considerations are taken on the length of the cavity. In this work it is discussed theoretical limitation in the design of radiometers, particularly the influence of radiometer length (the cavity length). Theory of partial coherence is used to obtain the instrument function and to show how the length of the instrument affects measurements.
