Over the years much time has been dedicated to improving lens optimisation routines. Most of the work has been upon the damped least squares (DLS) method. In this paper a number of theoretical and practical enhancements are presented. Some are new, others have already been published but never transposed into commercial software. These enhancements combine to allow the user to make more informed choices at every stage of an optimisation, and have now been incorporated into the widely used WinLens software package.

Light beam attenuator is one kind of optical element which has been widely used in optical technique. According to beam attenuation principle, it can be divided into two kinds, one is absorbing type attenuator, the other is non-absorbing type attenuator. There has been considerable attention paid to study visible attenuator, but there are few ways to attenuate 3.39 mu m laser beam. In this article we have introduced a series new type 3.39 mu m laser beam attenuator made by suing birefringent crystal. Some is absorbing type attenuator. the other is non-absorbing type attenuator. Such as: two calcite parallel plates type,two yttrium orthovanadate prism type, two yttrium orthovanadate parallel plates plus lambda/2 waveplate type etc.

The performance of an optical system can be degraded by the intrusion of stray light from sources both inside and outside of the system field of view. Stray light, or "veiling glare," can be particularly distracting in visual systems such as Helmet Mounted Display (HMD) systems. This paper describes techniques used by the authors to map stray light source positions in the far field for HMD systems and to quantitatively define their impact. The mapping can be performed over 4 pi steradians (i.e., over a full sphere) both inside and outside the system field of view. Monte-Carlo ray tracing algorithms are utilized for determining an effective source intensity distribution across the entire far field and a subtractive technique is utilized that separates the veiling glare component from the desired optical signal component. Once the major veiling glare source positions are identified, methods to reduce veiling glare can be determined. A technique for reducing noise in the calculation due to the statistical nature of the Monte Carlo ray trace is also discussed.

optical lenses and systems have historically been of interest to the design and simulation community due to their extensive use in a variety of applications, including telecommunications and imaging. To simulate these systems, it is often possible to take advantage of symmetry or apply physical approximations, such as ray tracing and/or beam propagation, in order to avoid a rigorous solution of Maxwell's equations. However, in cases where these techniques are not applicable, such as when feature sizes become comparable to the wavelength of interest, full-wave electromagnetic simulations are required. Unfortunately, the time constraints and simulation sizes associated with many designs render this analysis infeasible or impractical, a problem that is aggravated by iterative design flows. Hence, a numerical platform capable of handling such computationally intense problems is necessary. In this paper, we present a hardware-based, full-wave simulation platform and demonstrate the advantages of hardware acceleration for the simulation of optical applications. Specifically, we will present a diffractive optical element (DOE) lens simulation, comparing results with previously published analytic and experimental data. We then modify the basic lens arrangement to produce an optical beam splitter. Because such a device cannot be analytically described using symmetry, this example will demonstrate the unique advantages of powerful hardware solvers for the analysis of DOE applications. Finally, we discuss how hardware-based solvers are critical for iterative designs by means of a 1-to-3 beam splitter example. This simulation system represents a new era in optical engineering, enabling the design of next-generation devices today.

The ROBS (Rapid optical Beam Steering) tracking telescope was invented and developed at TTC to provide a high acceleration, large aperture beam steering system for rapid pointing to multiple objects. The optical system consists of a fast, oversized spherical primary mirror with the 50 cm aperture stop at the center of curvature of the primary mirror (CCP). A lightweight secondary mirror selects the instantaneous field of view by scanning over the petzval image surface of the primary mirror. The secondary mirror is gimbaled about the CCP on a rigid, lightweight mast. The system's symmetry about the CCP simplifies the optical and mechanical design and provides very rapid retargeting over a 30 degree field of regard for multiple target tracking. Field corrector and pupil relay optics inside the support tube collimate the light through coude' optics to passive sensors and laser radar optics. The 2-sphere, 2-asphere aplanatic, anastigmant all-reflective design corrects the 9.1 mr of spherical aberration from the F/1 primary and provides 10 microradian resolution over a 5 mr field of view. The system incorporates near field focus adjustment to provide high resolution imaging and laser ranging over a large volume of space. Two 50 cm systems have been built and demonstrated tracking multiple targets in the field. This paper describes the opto-mechanical design and demonstrated system capabilities.

optical MEMS (micro electro mechanical systems) have been used to reduce size, weight and costs of any kind of optical systems very successfully starting in the last decades. Scientists at Fraunhofer IPMS invented a resonant drive for 1-d and 2-d MEMS scanning mirror devices. Besides mirrors also scanning gratings have been realized. Now, rapidly growing new applications demand for enhanced functions and further miniaturization. This task cannot be solved by simply putting more functionality into the MEMS chip, for example grating and slit structures, but by three dimensional hybrid integration of the complete optical system into a stack of several functional substrates. Here we present the optical system design and realization strategy for a scanning grating spectrometer for the near infrared (NIR) range. First samples will be mounted from single components by a bonder tool (Finetech Fineplacer Femto) but the option of wafer assembly will be kept open for future developments. Extremely miniaturized NIR spectrometer could serve a wide variety of applications for handheld devices from food quality analysis to medical services or materials identification.

Advances in manufacturing and measuring technology are making the use of freeform mirrors more practical than in the recent past. New degrees of freedom make it possible for designers to improve image quality while increasing the field of view and avoiding obscurations. But other issues arise when one designs a system with several mirrors, particularly packaging and clearance concerns: one must ensure that none of the mirrors gets in the way of the beam from any of the others, and one must consider the coordinate system in which the shapes are defined and in which they are measured, which are not necessarily the same. Addressing these concerns requires new computational tools.

A system of three identical CCD-cameras was developed enabling stereoscopic auroral observations. An image intensifier allows for real-time imaging of auroral arcs with interference or broad-band filters. The combination of a small-angle optics with a CCD-chip of 756x580 pixels provides spatial resolutions of auroral small-scale structures down to 20 m. The cameras are controlled by personal computers with integrated global positioning (GPS) modules enabling time synchronization of the cameras and providing the exact geographical position for the portable cameras. Calibration with a standard Light source is the basis for quantitative evaluation of images by image processing techniques. The current technical development is the combination with local operating networks (LON) for monitoring camera parameters like voltage and temperature and remote control of parameters like filter positions, mounting tilt angles and camera gain.

The present research is part of an effort to develop tools that make the lens design process more systematic. In typical optical design tasks, the presence of many local minima in the optical merit function landscape makes design non-trivial. With the method of Saddle Point Construction (SPC) which was developed recently ([F. Bociort and M. van Turnhout, Opt. engineering 48, 063001 (2009)]) new local minima are obtained efficiently from known ones by adding and removing lenses in a systematic way. To illustrate how SPC and special properties of the lens design landscape can be used, we will present the step-by-step design of a wide-angle pinhole lens and the automatic design of a 9-lens system which, after further development with traditional techniques, is capable of good performance. We also give an example that shows how to visualize the saddle point that can be constructed at any surface of any design of an imaging system that is a local minimum.

In a recent paper, we compared the diffraction and geometrical optical transfer functions (OTFs) of an optical imaging system, and showed that the GOTF approximates the DOTF within 10% when a primary aberration is about two waves or larger [Appl. Opt., 55, 3241-3250 (2016)]. In this paper, we determine and compare the times to calculate the DOTF by autocorrelation or digital autocorrelation of the pupil function, and by a Fourier transform (FT) of the point-spread function (PSF);and the GOTF by a FT of the geometrical PSF and its approximation, the spot diagram. Our starting point for calculating the DOTF is the wave aberrations of the system in its pupil plane, and the ray aberrations in the image plane for the GOTF. The numerical results for primary aberrations and a typical imaging system show that the direct integrations are slow, but the calculation of the DOTF by a FT of the PSF is generally faster than the GOTF calculation by a FT of the spot diagram.
