A simple closed form solution was derived for the optimum weight design of a cylindrical sandwich mirror for a given self-weight deflection and mirror radius. This optimum solution is based on the generalized deflection equation for an axisymmetrically supported thick circular plate. This two parameter equation of deflection captures the deflection of the plate caused by bending and transverse shear. The solution yields the optimum facesheet thickness, core thickness, and core density. The derived optimum solution was used in a case study for the GLAS (Geoscience Laser Altimeter System) primary mirror. This Beryllium mirror is manufactured with an open back isogrid pattern. The objective of this study is to determine a lightweight mirror design using Aluminum sandwich construction that can meet the performances of the current mirror and reduce fabrication costs. With the optimum solution several first order approximations using Aluminum honeycomb or foam core were determined. The performance, 1 g deflection, and wave front error of these designs was determined from Finite Element Analysis. The results conclude that sandwich construction outperforms the isogrid design by significant margins on both weight and distortion if the same material is used. Because of its superior specific stiffness the Beryllium isogrid design still marginally outperforms the optimum Aluminum sandwich design. However, the Aluminum sandwich design should provide significant advantages on cost and ease of fabrication over Beryllium isogrid designs.

Tunable lenses are optical systems that have attracted much attention due to their potential applications in such areas like ophthalmology, machine vision, microscopy and laser processing. In recent years we have been working in the analysis and performance of a liquid-filled variable focal length lens, this is a lens that can modify its focal length by changing the amount of water within it. Nowadays we extend our study to a particular adaptive lens known as solid elastic lens (SEL) that it is formed by an elastic main body made of Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS Sylgard 184). In this work, we present the design, simulation and analysis of an adaptive solid elastic lens that in principle imitates the accommodation process of the crystalline lens in the human eye. For this work, we have adopted the parameters of the schematic eye model developed in 1985 by Navarro et al.;this model represents the anatomy of the eye as close as possible to reality by predicting an acceptable and accurate quantity of spherical and chromatic aberrations without any shape fitting. An opto-mechanical analysis of the accommodation process of the adaptive lens is presented, by simulating a certain amount of radial force applied onto the SEL using the finite element method with the commercial software SolidWorks (R). We also present ray-trace diagrams of the simulated compression process of the adaptive lens using the commercial software OSLO (R).

This paper presents a new pattern design for encoding structured light for scanning 3D surface and the decoding process. The basic unit of the pattern is a code-block that contains one central label and eight square-shaped primitives that provide two functions: code-block indexing and point-positions for triangulating. The square-shaped primitive has one notch in a different position to represent 8 digit numbers, which are easily to convert label to number for indexing code-block. One primitive also contributes five point-positions, centroid and four extreme, for triangulating and estimating 3D information. The design of code-block has eight 8-bit numbers allowing a higher error-tolerant and providing better resolution in 3D reconstruction. Experiment shows that the proposed pattern is suitable for indoor mapping and large scene scanning.

Transparent conducting Fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) thin films were deposited on glass substrates by pulsed DC magnetron sputtering from cost saving metal targets. We observed lower resistivity and higher average transmittance in the visible range after the application of various post heating treatments. The electrical and optical properties of FTO films were investigated. When the annealing temperature is 400 degrees C in air, the average transmittance is 79.79% with the lowest resistivity of 1.38x10(-3) Omega-cm, carrier density of 2.27x10(20) cm(-3) and mobility of 20 cm(2)/V-s. When the annealing temperature is 400 degrees Cin a H-2 5%+N-2 95% atmosphere, the average transmittance is 79.75 % with the lowest resistivity of 1.26x10(-3) Omega-cm, carrier density of 2.17x10(20) cm(-3) and mobility of 22.8 cm(2)/V-s. When the annealing temperature is 350 degrees Cin vacuum, the average transmittance is 80.48% with the lowest resistivity of 1.23x10(-3) Omega-cm, carrier density of 4.40x10(20) cm(-3) and mobility of 11.6 cm(2)/V-s.

Micro- to nano-scale additive manufacturing has enabled the realization of 3D microstructures at sub-micron resolution for complex miniaturized optical and mechanical systems. There is a growing demand for integrable technologies and miniaturization in applications from biomedical diagnostics and environmental sensing to high-precision industrial tasks. The ability to rapidly prototype facilitates the development of custom-tailored components for such specialized applications. This paper presents three case studies highlighting developments utilizing two-photon direct laser writing (TP-DLW). The aim of this work is to provide a comprehensive overview of the current state-of-the-art fabrication tool for the purpose of miniaturizing imaging and sensing technologies.

Monolithic, all-fiber PM optical amplifiers have been investigated regarding components performance, amplifier design and narrow line-width amplification. PM-based components performed very well, the pump/signal combiner in particular handling > 300W pump power and still maintaining the PER of the input signal. A co-pumped amplifier configuration was chosen based on reliability and potential SBS mitigation (i.e. fiber length after the active fiber output). This system based on PLMA-YDF-25/400 fiber appeared to give the best output power (155W-177W, depending on the length of passive delivery fiber), PER (similar to 17 dB) and excellent beam quality (M-2 = 1.1). Altering the fiber temperature and length were necessary to provide the best results.

In light of the current state of detection technologies designed to meet the current threat from biological agents, the need for a low-cost and lightweight sensor is clear. Such a sensor based on optical detection, with real time responses and no consumables, is possible. Devices arising from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency's (DARPA) Semiconductor UV optical Sources (SUVOS) are the enabling technology. These sources are capable of en-fitting UV wavelengths known to excite fluorescence from biological agent particles while costing a few dollars apiece and consuming low power. These devices are exploited in the TAC-Bio Sensor. A unique optical design is used to collect the usable portion of the LED emission and focus it into the probing region of the sensor. To compensate for the low UV power density relative to UV lasers, the TAC-Bio utilizes a unique opposed flow configuration to increase the interaction between particles and the UV beam. The current TAC-Bio sensor testbed is capable of detecting fluorescence Bacillus globigii (BG, an anthrax simulant) spore agglomerates down to 5 microns in diameter. Ongoing work is focusing on increasing signal to noise so that smaller particles, possibly single spores, can be detected, as well as on including additional data channels, such as light scattering, to increase selectivity of the sensor.

current developments in computer technology give rise to increasing data communication over relatively short distances at backplane- and inter MCM interconnect level. It is foreseen that electrical interconnect will not be able to accommodate the necessary data traffic in advanced data processing systems in the future and hence a bottleneck will be created. A potential remedy for this interconnect problem is the use of parallel optical datalinks. In this paper we propose small diameter step index plastic optical fiber ribbons in combination with high efficient resonant cavity LED's as a cheap and feasible option for these optical links. A design for such an optical link is presented with special, attention for the optical pathway. Experimental results on the optical properties of the used POF are shown. We describe the development of RCLED's at 850 nm specially designed for efficient coupling into POF. We measured a RCLED to POF coupling efficiency up to 40%. Additionally we report on the technologies used for the fabrication and assembly of the optical pathways and finally some experiments were carried out on the first realized assemblies.

Dual-band and wide-band lenses covering both the MWIR and LWIR spectral bands are increasingly needed as dual-band MWIR/LWIR detectors have become prevalent and broadband applications have expanded. currently in dual-band /wide-band applications, the use of more than three elements per lens group and the use of chalcogenide glass is common. This results in expensive systems. Also, many chalcogenides are available only in small diameters, which is a problem for large aperture broadband lenses. In this paper an investigation of cost-effective designs for dual-band MWIR/LWIR lens using only widely available IR materials, specifically Ge, ZnSe and ZnS were performed. An athermalized dual-band MWIR/LWIR using these three materials is presented. The performance analysis of this lens shows that this design form with these three common IR materials works well in certain applications. The required large size blanks of these materials can be easily obtained. Traditional chromatic aberration correction without diffraction for either wide-band or dual-band application was employed. In addition, the methods of harmonic diffraction for dual-band applications, especially with one narrow band, were used for two different presented designs.
