256×256 diffractive microlens arrays have been designed by considering the independent optical and processing parameters for 3-5 μm wavelength with a microlens size of 100 μm. The lens F number and array pitch are 1.5 and 100 μm, respectively. The diffractive microlens arrays have been fabricated on the surface of Si substrates by successive photolithography and Ar+ ion-beam-etching technique. The practical processes and fabrication method are discussed. The optical characteristics and measurements of the diffractive microlens arrays are presented.

Computational materials science has evolved in recent years into a reliable theory capable of predicting not only idealized materials and device performance properties, but also those that apply to practical engineering developments. The codes run on workstations and even now are fast enough to be useful design tools. A review will be presented of the current status of this rapidly advancing field. As a demonstration of the power of the methods, predictions of the native point and complex defect, and impurity densities for the Hg-0.8 Cd0.2Te alloy as functions of external processing conditions will be treated. Where measurements have been done, the observed values agree well with the predictions. As an example, we fmd that As incorporates predominately on the cation sublattice, if the material is grown from the Te side of the existence curve las occurs in MBE growth), whereas it tends to reside on the anion sublattice in Hg-saturated growth. On the cation sublattice As is a donor. It is an acceptor on the Te sublattice. We have devised a post-MBE-growth processing method to encourage the transfer of As from the cation to the anion sublattice. Those aspects of the proposed process that have been tested work.

A major hurdle to the development of Micro Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS) resides on the lack of communication link between the mechanical (or physical) world and the electronic world. Within a development phase, each team handles the tools traditionally used in its disciplines without any common interface. When using field solvers, e.g. finite element methods (FEM), MEMS engineers identify material properties and boundary conditions, and built a mesh, so the tool can run a 3D finite elements solution. The tool can predict the amount of stress and strain in the structures, the movement or any other interesting characteristics, but none of this information can be automatically transferred to an IC design tool. In addition, the straightforward advances within the latest developments of the mainstream semiconductor industry is the use of already available intellectual property (IP) in the development of systems optimally matched to the end product specifications. These prospects call for a new generation of design tools that combines aspects of EDA and mechanical/thermal/fluidic CAD. The new product suite presented in this paper offers an integrated solution allowing a continuous design flow from front-end to back-end. The end objective is to bring to the system level designer, a complete design flow, down to the chip level, anchored on design re-use and reliable system-level simulation, thus leveraging standard IP products for the realization of sophisticated miniature systems, at low cost.

The objective of this paper is to report the recent developments in lightweight mirror technology that have occurred at Composite Optics, Incorporated (COI). The developments occurred as a result of the activities being conducted in support of the Next Generation Space Telescope (NGST), Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS), and Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) Programs. Our sponsors on these programs are the Marshall and Goddard Space Flight Centers and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The requirements, design approach, actual performance, and the technology status for each program are summarized in the following sections. The emergence of composite designs provides exciting potential for nontraditional, accurate, lightweight, stable, stiff, and high strength composite mirrors. This evolving technology promises significant improvement in reducing weight, cost and cycle time for future infrared, visible, and x-ray systems. Customers currently embracing composite mirror technology for radiometric use are already reaping substantial system performance benefits. Other customers interested in LIDAR, IR, visible, and grazing incidence x-ray applications are eagerly awaiting successful completion of current technology development and demonstration efforts.

The use of holographic optical elements (HOEs) in conjunction with LCDs to make high performance economical autostereoscopic displays is a new and promising development, The very first demonstrators showed that the technique can be used to produce very good quality 3D and 2D images, Our current work is directed at improving performance and exploring other opportunities opened up by the basic concept, These include improved optical design of the HOE and, possibility of using LEDs as light sources and that of using the HOE to generate 3D an at the same time provide colour separation to allow the display of full colour images on a monochrome LCD without the use of conventional colour filters. In addition the use of this technology to display two or more images on the LCD such that two viewers will each see different images on the one display.

A new optical computation method for the monitoring of chemical reactions requires filters with spectral transmittance curves that vary in a complicated way with wavelength. In this paper we consider the design of two different sets of filters, one of which could be used to predict the degree of curing of a polymer from an analysis of its Raman spectra. The problem is not easy because the required filters have sharp spectral features in a narrow spectral region. Two different design methods are used. The performance of one set designed by conventional means is very close to the specifications. However, current thin film deposition methods are probably incapable of producing filters of such thickness. The second solution is based on the use of several filters placed in series. It should be possible to implement this particular solution, but its performance is not nearly as good. Nevertheless, calculations indicate that this filter pair should also result in a satisfactory control of the curing process.

An immersive virtual environment (ivE) modeling and simulation tool is being developed for designing advanced weapon and training systems. One unique feature of the tool is that the design, and not just visualization of the design, is accomplished with the ivE tool. Acceptance of ivE tools requires comparisons with current commercial applications. In this pilot study, expert users of a popular desktop 3D graphics application performed identical modeling and simulation tasks using both the desktop and ivE applications. The ivE tool consisted of a head-mounted display, 3D spatialized sound, spatial trackers on head and hands, instrumented gloves, and a simulated speech recognition system. The results are preliminary because performance from only four users has been examined. When using the ivE system, users completed the tasks to criteria in less time than when using the desktop application. Subjective ratings of the visual displays in each system were similar. Ratings for the desktop controls were higher than for the ivE controls. Ratings of immersion and user enjoyment were higher for the ivE than for the desktop application. These results are particularly remarkable because participants had used the desktop application regularly for three to five years and the prototype ivE tool for only three to six hours.

developments in laser digitizing technology now make it possible to capture very accurate 3D images of the surface of the human body in less than 20 seconds. Applications for the images range from animation of movie characters to the design and visualization of clothing and individual equipment (CIE). In this paper we focus on modeling the user/equipment interface. Defining the relative geometry between user and equipment provides a better understanding of equipment performance, and can make the design cycle more efficient. Computer-aided fit testing (CAFT) is the application of graphical and statistical techniques to visualize and quantify the human/equipment interface in virtual space. In short, CAFT looks to measure the relative geometry between a user and his or her equipment. The design cycle changes with the introducing CAFT;now some evaluation may be done in the CAD environment prior to prototyping. CAFT may be applied in two general ways: 1) to aid in the creation of new equipment designs and 2) to evaluate current designs for compliance to performance specifications. We demonstrate the application of CAFT with two examples. First, we show how a prototype helmet may be evaluated for fit, and second we demonstrate how CAFT may be used to measure body armor coverage.

The U.S. Navy is preactively upgrading its fleet of P-3 Maritime Patrol Aircraft to continue to meet current and near future challenges to national security. The traditional P-3 role of Anti-Submarine Warfare, though retained, is being expanded to include Anti-Surface Warfare, increased reconnaissance and surveillance, and other missions. As part of the overall improvement program, P-3 cockpit and tactical crewstations throughout the aircraft are being upgraded to improve crew performance. Flat panel display technology is replacing CRTs in five on-going crewstation improvements. This paper reports on one of them: the replacement of CRT displays in a prototype EO/IR crewstation with a suite of four color AMLCDs, one of which is configured with a surface acoustic wave touch overlay to serve as a programmable touch interface. This upgrade is already in service with the fleet.

This paper describes the cumulative status to-date, and current developments in the British Aerospace IR scene projector system technology in early 1997. The systems have been developed for Hardware-in-the-loop (HWIL) simulation in missile test and evaluation facilities. Historically, the technology has been called ''Thermal Picture Synthesis'' an early equivalent of what is now known as Infra-red Scene Projection (IRSP). Earlier generations of system were based on a monolithic resistor-substrate construction, a modification of which is still used for ground target simulations (TPS3), whereas the more recent systems for air target simulations are based on fully suspended resistor designs (TPS4). These projector systems incorporating full scale arrays have been fabricated at up to 256 x 256 complexity. Research work is being carried out on high temperature arrays for air-to-air countermeasure simulations, and the first TPS5 full system at 512 x 512 complexity has completed its design stage and has recently moved into fabrication. Research testbed arrays of 768 x 768 have just been made, and 1024 x 1024 arrays are presently being fabricated. The paper includes an initial introduction to the basics of the technology, and is followed by a section on certain specialised features to combat inherent issues in the technology. Specifications and the current status of each category of device is then given.
