The Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) project, currently underway, requires a camera mated to a 1.3 meter Cassegrain telescope that will simultaneously image the J, H and Ks spectral bands onto three separate NICMOS3 HgCdTe detector arrays. Dichroic beamsplitters allow the three FPA's to view the same field simultaneously. This paper reviews the development of this camera, presents a detailed analysis of the optical design, and discusses the techniques used to align the instrument and evaluate its performance. The low irradiance of astronomical sources, combined with background limited performance of the detectors, mandated a reimaging configuration and the enclosure of the camera optics within the cold volume. Correcting chromatic aberrations, and minimizing ghost images were additional challenges imposed by program requirements. The key to achieving high performance was found to be the selection of lens materials. The final F/3.5 optical design uses fifteen CaF2 elements and four Infrasil elements in an all-spherical configuration. The design is diffraction limited over the full format in the Ks spectral band, and is nearly so in the J and H bands. The tolerance environment is benign, making the design well suited for use in a cryogenic environment. A single channel prototype has been built and extensively field tested at the 50-inch telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory. Each channel in the multi-spectral camera uses the same optical design successfully demonstrated in the prototype. currently, the first of two three-channel cameras is undergoing lab tests for image quality and channel registration.

The research and current state of the art of flash-lamp-pumped Ti:sapphire lasers are reviewed. Further, an overview of present applications of this type of laser is given, presenting in detail multispectral light detecting and ranging (LIDAR) for aerosol size distribution measurement, efficient laser vaporization and short-pulse amplification to high energies. Finally, recent achievements in the field of Ti:sapphire laser technology are presented. The improved design of discharge circuit and pump cavity resulted in increased laser efficiency, average power capability and reliability. Employing a semiconductor switch instead of a thyratron allows for a more compact, reliable and cost-effective set-up of the discharge circuit, which is supposed to meet the stringent requirements for electro-magnetic compatibility (EMC) of the laser systems more easily.

Lead-salt narrow gap semiconductors are useful materials for mid infrared lasers operating at 2.5 - 20 micrometer range. In this paper, we review recent advances in the lead-salt mid- infrared lasers, and propose a new intersubband laser using type-II superlattice structure. Progress in growth methods, studies on band offsets of heterostructures including superlattices, and developments of new lead-salt materials improved the device performance such as operation temperature, threshold current, and wavelength coverage. In PbSnTe system, design of laser structures taking into account the type-I' band offsets realized high- performance long-wavelength lasers with wavelength coverage to 20 micrometer. Development of new active layer materials such as PbEuTe, PbSrSe, and PbSrS realized effective carrier confinement, and extremely increased operation temperature of the lasers in 2.5 - 6 micrometer range. Introduction of quantum wells into the active layer is giving further possibility to the lead-salt mid-infrared lasers.

A novel, rep-rated, relativistic magnetron design is demonstrated. Unlike other relativistic magnetrons, the high voltage pulse is positively charged, feeding the anode block, while the cathode is grounded. Moreover, the anode- cathode interaction space is centered in a larger buffer cavity that serves as an electric insulator and electromagnetic impedance matching between the anode block and the exit waveguide(s). The grounded cathode geometry eliminates the axial current (improving efficiency) and enables the use of compact, CW, U-shaped electromagnet. It may also be utilized for frequency tunability through the buffer cavity in a way similar to coaxial magnetrons. Operation with peak power of 50 MW (100 MW) and pulse length of 150 ns (70 ns) has been achieved. Employing metal- dielectric cathodes led to repetitive operation up to 10 Hz. The analysis emphasizes time-resolved spectral power density of both in-cavity and emitted microwaves in regard to the undesirable occurrence of pulse shortening.

The Arnold engineering Development Center (AEDC) scene generation test capability (SGTC) program has completed the development of a laser based direct write scene generation (DWSG) facility that provides dynamic mission simulation testing for infrared (IR) focal plane arrays (FPAs) and their associated signal processing electronics. The AEDC DWSG focal plane array test capability (FPATC) includes lasers operating at 0.514, 1.06, 5.4, or 10.6 micrometer, and acousto-optic deflectors (AODs) which modulate the laser beam position and amplitude. Complex radio frequency (rf) electronics controls each AOD by providing multi-frequency inputs. These inputs produce a highly accurate and independent multi-beam deflection or 'rake,' that is swept across the FPA sensor under test. Each rf amplitude input to an AOD translates into an accurate and independent beam intensity in the rake. Issues such as scene fidelity, sensor frame rates, scenario length, and real-time laser beam position adjustments require rf control electronics that employs the use of advanced analog and digital signal processing techniques and designs. By implementing flexible system architectures in the electronics, the overall capability of the DWSG to adapt to emerging test requirement is greatly enhanced. Presented in this paper is an overview of the signal processing methodology and designs required to handle the DWSG requirement. Further, the paper summarizes the current status of recent AEDC technology efforts tasked with the implementation of real-time and closed-loop scene manipulation including sensor optical simulation using the DWSG. The paper describes a proof-of-principle (PoP) demonstration which used high speed digital signal processors inherent in the DWSG electronic design to compute the rotation, translation, optical transfer function convolution, and system calibration functions during scene projection.

A spaceborne telescope has been designed and analyzed for a 2-micron solid state coherent lidar system operating on a satellite. The optical system consists of a large off-axis reflective telescope, a large-aperture diffractive scanner, an image derotator and a lag angle compensator. Due to the orbiting motion of the satellite and scanning, the boresight of the telescope shifts during the round trip travel time of the laser pulses to the target. In a coherent lidar system utilizing optical heterodyne detection, the relative alignment of the received signal with respect to the local oscillator beam is particularly critical. Two compensators have been designed to correct the boresight errors as well as the wavefront errors caused by beam wandering due to the boresight changes. Several design approaches for the compensators have been investigated. The optical and optomechanical design issues for such a system are discussed. The results of optical performance, modeling, and tolerance analysis for the telescope are also presented.

Although considered as low level processing, edge detection is a crucial step in object and image recognition. Such an operation can be implemented in real time by use of an appropriate transmittance in the Fourier plane of a so-called VanderLugt optical correlator. The performance of this scheme depends on both the contour enhancement operator chosen and the spatial filter design. For the latter point, great flexibility can be obtained by using computer generated holography techniques. In this framework, we propose to implement a particular contour extraction primitive, namely the summation of the partial derivatives of an input function, using a direct binary search (DBS) procedure for the design of the spatial filter. This first approach leads, however, to a non-detection of the contours oriented at 45 degrees to the abcissa axis. To solve this problem we propose a modified gradient holographic filter. A theoretical analysis and simulation results are presented.

We have developed a low transmission loss prism for optical switches suitable for optical fiber systems which monitor and control factory equipment. We have realized the low transmission loss prism by using the geometrical property of ellipsoids and a newly developed optical power evaluation computer program which facilitates estimating the coupling efficiency between two optical fibers considering total reflection phenomena, numerical aperture and far field pattern of the optical fiber for an aspherical optical system. The transmission loss of the present ellipsoidal prism is 5 dB for the plastic fiber with the core diameter of 1 mm, and 5.8 dB for polymer clad fiber with core diameter of 0.2 mm. The present ellipsoidal prism improves transmission loss by 4 dB as compared with the conventional spherical prism for the optical fibers usually adopted to the optical fiber systems. The calculated loss and experimental loss agreed well. This agreement confirms the usefulness of our computer program.

This paper describes the design and operation of a multichannel, high voltage pulse generator. The pulse generator produces six pulses with rise times of 1- 2 ns and peak voltages over 20kV. Each of the output pulses is separately controlled to provide a variable pulse delay of up to 15ns. Jitter between pulses is <50 ps. The circuit is based on a primary pulse generator and six ferrite loaded transmission lines which simultaneously reduce the rise time of the primary pulse and delay application of the six output pulses to their loads. The pulses in each of the ferrite transmission lines are independently controlled by simple DC current sources.
