An optical minimum configuration of a laser interferometer for noncooperative scattering objects is investigated. An optimization of the SNR (signal-to-noise ratio) of the homodyne receiver is achieved by beam design. Scattering measurement object surfaces generate a speckle pattern on the detector surface which influences the SNR. Within the whole operating range of the optics, the transmitted light spot on the surface under investigation should therefore be small. The receiving optics should image the light spot onto the detector surface. The detection of a noncooperative object in a distance of 26 m is proven experimentally.

The Next Generation Sky Survey (NGSS) Telescope is a spaceborne cryogenic optical telescope with four channels covering the wavelength range 3.5 to 23 microns. The 0.5 m aperture telescope is based on a modified three mirror afocal design, with a scan mirror at the exit pupil compensating for the spacecraft motion. After the scan mirror, the light is spectrally split and focussed by three refractive camera systems onto four detector arrays. The nominal opticaldesign exceeds the requirement of diffraction limited performance at 8 microns wavelength over the 1 degree by 0.5 degree field of regard.

The National Ignition Facility (NIF) requested an optical diagnostic for measuring shock velocities, shock breakout times, and shock emission of objects with sizes of I to 10 mm. For the polar port of the target chamber, an 8-inch triplet lens collects light at f/3 inside a 30-foot-diameter vacuum chamber and uses an optical relay to send the image into two interferometers located at a distance of 160 feet. Light propagates through a VISAR (Velocity Interferometry System for Any Reflector) interferometer employing a Mach-Zehnder configuration. After exiting the interferometers the images are recorded, both by streak cameras and CCD gated imagers. Discrete magnification changes are accomplished by swapping out optical elements. Large dove prisms are used to rotate the image to align a selected region of the object with the slits of the streak cameras. Unique mounting structures are required to remotely control the alignment of the optical axis. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) was performed on all mounting structures. The first 8-inch triplet can be no closer than 500 mm from the target chamber center and is protected by a blast window that has to be replaced after every event. The first several lens groups have to be fused silica for radiation resistance. A frequency-doubled Nd:YAG laser, operating at 659.5 nm, is used to illuminate the moving object. The VISAR laser wavelength had to be different than the first, second, and third harmonics of the NIF drive lasers.

Recent developments in the field of high transmitting beam shaping optics for material processing are presented. Central parts of these optics are non-rotationally symmetric optical elements (NOEs). Advanced design principles for NOEs are presented. An optical setup containing a NOE and a system for the adaptation of the spatial coherence properties of excimer lasers to the processing requirements are presented together with beam diagnosis and material processing results. In comparison to results obtained earlier a largely increased beam shaping performance is demonstrated.
