Metals used in aqueous environments where high temperatures and pressures are present are susceptible to corrosion. This is the case for nuclear power plants, especially CANDU (TM) reactors, where the liquid water systems can reach over 300 degrees C at pressures well above 101.325 kPa (1 atm). In such situations, failure to control corrosion has economic and safety consequences. To extend corrosion modeling tools, such as Pourbaix diagrams, to harsh aqueous conditions, there is a need for experimental thermochemical data performed at elevated temperatures. This is particularly true for metal and alloy systems where such information is unavailable or unreliable. A relatively simple approach to obtaining temperature dependent thermodynamic properties is the investigation of solid-liquid phase, or solubility, equilibria. However, this requires specially designed instrumentation that can withstand harsh temperatures and extreme pH conditions, while providing accurate data. In this work, an apparatus developed for super-ambient highly acidic and alkaline solubility experiments is presented. Solubility measurements were made in the zinc oxide system, which has been extensively studied. Using these equilibrium data and comparing to the literature, allowed the instrumentation and analysisprocess to be validated. In situ pH measurements using a constant volume, batch reactor system are described along with a brief presentation of the ZnO dissolution equilibria results at 85 degrees C (358.15 K).

While drilling automation typically focuses on rig control systems and performance optimization, this study broadens the scope to include the evaluation of overall drilling performance and the identification of operational issues. The automation of routine analyses frees engineers from time-consuming dataprocessing tasks, allowing them to focus their expertise on critical problem-solving and optimization opportunities. This work examines the implementation of multiple algorithms: one for identifying various downhole vibration modes, another for evaluating the directional response of a push-the-bit Rotary-Steerable System (RSS), automated connection break down analysis, and measure-while-drilling (MWD) recycling attempts analysis. These automated systems enable quicker operational responses with appropriate corrective actions. The study begins with an assessment of data quality, emphasizing the importance of a robust cloud-based architecture for data collection, cleaning, and storage. From there, a systematic approach is taken to translate the thought process of experienced engineers into logical programmatic steps for data evaluation. The validated algorithms are deployed within cloud-based infrastructures for large-scale implementation, providing real-time access to key performance indicators and analysis results. Detailed heat maps showing the effects of operating parameters better visualize and understand vibration trends, while automated steering interval evaluation provides insights into RSS directional performance. Connection break down analysis examines time components of drill pipe connections, and recycling analysis tracks the efficiency of MWD survey data transmission. Building these automated tools has reduced the time requirement for understanding operational data, which drastically shortens the time between identifying issues and implementing solutions.
