In the last decade, machine learning (ML) has shown tremendous success in areas such as vision, language, strategic games, and more. Parallel to this, hospitals' capacity for data collection has greatly increased with the adoption and continuing maturation of electronic health records (EHRs). The result of these trends has been a large degree of excitement and optimism about how ML will revolutionize healthcare once researchers get access to data. In this work, we present a cautionary tale of the instinct some computer scientists have to "let the data speak for itself." Using a popular, public EHR dataset as a case study, we demonstrate numerous examples where a non-clinician's intuition may lead to incorrect - and potentially harmful - modeling assumptions. We explore both non-obvious quirks in the data (i.e., hypothetical incorrect assumptions) and examples of published papers that misunderstood the data generating process (i.e., actual incorrect assumptions). This case study is meant to serve as a cautionary tale to encourage every data scientist to approach their projects with the humility to know what they can do well and what they cannot. Without the guidance of stakeholders that understand the data generating process, data scientists run the risk of "garbage-in, garbage-out" analysis because their models are not measuring meaningful relationships.

When a substation is newly built, renovated, or expanded, it is necessary to conduct acceptance checks on the monitoring information connected to the control system. Traditional automatic acceptance of substations uses data check at the master system through only background and station side processes, while monitoring personnel often monitor substation operations through wiring diagrams, which poses a risk of misrepresentation of information and poses a safety risk to the operation of the power grid. This article designed a method for verifying diagrams for monitoring based on wiring diagram analysis and verification, complemented the automatic acceptance logic for the entire process of monitoring images from the slave end to the master end, and applied it to practical engineering applications.

Robot grasping and manipulation allow robots to interact with their environments and execute a plethora of complex tasks that require increased dexterity (e.g., open a door, push buttons, collect and transpose objects, etc.). Collecting data of such activities is of paramount importance as it allows roboticists to create new methods and models that will facilitate the execution of sophisticated tasks. In this paper, we propose new wearable, lightweight, low-cost human machine interfaces that improve the efficiency of the data collection process for both robotic grasping and manipulation by offering intuitive and simplified control of the employed robotic grippers and hands. In particular, two different types of interfaces are proposed: i) a handle-based forearm stabilized interface that uses a waist-linkage system to provide weight support for bulky and heavy robotic end-effectors and ii) a palm-mounted interface that can accommodate smaller and lightweight grippers and hands, offering more agility in the control and positioning of these devices. Both interfaces are equipped with appropriate sliders, joysticks, and buttons that facilitate the control of the multiple degrees of freedom of the employed end-effectors and appropriate cameras that allow for object detection, identification, and object pose estimation.
