Armstrong Laboratory is focusing on software which will allow a graphics workstation to completely create and fly through a visual database anywhere in the world in under one hour, with no human intervention. This is being accomplished by utilizing the strengths of graphics workstations, rather than emulating traditional image generator methodology. Current software development allows a graphics workstation to automatically generate a flyable, two degree latitude by two degree longitude, visual database in less than five minutes from Defense Mapping Agency's DTED (digital terrain elevation data). Sources of cultural, color, and satellite digital data which could be used to improve the coloration/texture of the terrain- skin are being sought. Good feature data would then allow the development of an automated cultural population (e.g., buildings, overpasses, and rivers) of the database. These databases possess a much higher density of terrain data (approximately 450 times the usual number of terrain polygons) than traditional flight simulation databases processed from DTED source. This higher resolution provides the opportunity to research acrobatic maneuvering strategies during combat situations. Armstrong Laboratory's rapid database generation (RDG) project also incorporates a software-controlled high resolution inlay inside a lower resolution database within a single display-channel.

Few information systems create a standardized clinical patient record in which there are discrete and concise observations of patient problems and their resolution. Clinical notes usually are narratives which don't support an aggregate and systematic outcome analysis. Many programs collect information on diagnosis and coded procedures but are not focused on patient problems. Integrated definition (IDEF) methodology has been accepted by the Department of Defense as part of the Corporate Information Management Initiative and serves as the foundation that establishes a need for automation. We used IDEF modeling to describe present and idealized patient care activities. A logical IDEF data model was created to support those activities. The modeling process allows for accurate cost estimates based upon performed activities, efficient collection of relevant information, and outputs which allow real- time assessments of process and outcomes. This model forms the foundation for a prototype automated clinical information system (ACIS).

Scanned maps contribution to the aerial images interpretation allows to consider as possible the complete resolution of the geographical objects depicted in a scene. But as all symbolic documents, maps are submitted to unavoidable distortions during their conception process. We present a method to estimate and characterize these alterations in the road network case. An a priori model of the distortions is first built, based on the cartographic drawing rules. Then, a control of the map data is operated with a ground reference given by an aerial image. Finally, a prediction model is established from the results. It gives the roads aspects in the image with tolerance thresholds and alerts the operator when the map has a low reliability.

This paper includes a definition of an open-ended architecture that is used to automatically link multiple, dissimilar software models and simulators. Computerized Model Management and Development Systems (COMMANDS) is an automated model management system. It is designed to manage the configuration and execution of multiple simulations through executive control in a user-friendly environment. COMMANDS will allow the user to specify the interfaces and execution sequence of modules identified in a database. The order of execution of the modules is specified by the use and controlled during run time by a simulation drive. The results of the executed model (simulation run) are stored in a database for post-simulation retrieval and analysis.

The Middeck Active control Experiment (MACE) is a space shuttle flight experiment, manifest for launch on STS-67 on March 2, 1995, intended to demonstrate high authority active structural control in zero gravity conditions. Since no experimental on-orbit data is available before flight, the model used to derive these controllers must be obtained from a combination of analysis and open- and closed-loop ground testing. A general modeling approach to obtain this 0-g model is presented along with its application to the MACE test article. This modeling approach starts with a 1-g model, which includes gravity and suspension effects on the structure. This 1-g model is improved using ground test results in a process called updating. Once the model has been updated, it is verified through a combination of structural perturbation and closed-loop control. Finally, after the model has been verified, the gravity and suspension effects are removed to arrive at a prediction of the 0-g behavior of the structure.

FTIR spectra of borophosphosilicate (BPSG) films which are obtained by metal backed configurations are compared to those obtained by the conventional normal incidence transmission geometry. Sensitivity advantages are demonstrated for both hydrogen incorporation and dopant analyses. P-polarized measurements are explored for preferential excitation of vibrational modes. Reflectance measurements of BPSG films on silicon by FTIR and by the emerging techniques of spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE) both in the UV-visible and mid-IR spectral ranges are reviewed. The use of differential and derivative spectral data anlysis is illustrated for investigating structural and compositional changes which occur from film densification and in the course of film storage.

A hierarchical architecture for fuzzy modeling and inference has been developed to allow adaptation based on system performance feedback. A general adaptive algorithm is presented and its performance examined for three types of adaptive behaviour: continued learning, gradual change, and drastic change. In continued learning, the underlying system does not change and the adaptive algorithm utilizes the real-time data and associated feedback to improve the accuracy of the existing model. Gradual and drastic change represent fundamental alterations to the system being modeled. In each of the three types of behaviour, the adaptive algorithm has been shown to be able to reconfigure the rule bases to either improve the original approximation or adapt to the new system.

An image interpretation method is presented for the automatic processing of aerial pictures of a urban landscape. In order to improve the picture analysis, some a priori knowledge extracted from a geographic map is introduced. A coherent graph-based model of the city is built, starting with the road network. A global uncertainty management scheme has been designed in order to evaluate the final confidence we can have in the final results. This model and the uncertainty management tend to reflect the hierarchy of the available data and the interpretation levels. The symbolic relationships linking the different kinds of elements are taken into account while propagating and combining the confidence measures along the interpretation process.

Multiresolution surface reconstruction from volume data is very useful in medical imaging, data compression and multiresolution modeling. This paper presents a hierarchical structure for extracting multiresolution surfaces from volume data by using a 3-D wavelet transform. The hierarchical scheme is used to visualize different levels of detail of the surface and allows a user to explore different features of the surface at different scales. We use 3-D surface curvature as a smoothness condition to control the hierarchical level and the distance error between the reconstructed surface and the original data as the stopping criteria. A 3-D wavelet transform provides an appropriate hierarchical structure to build the volume pyramid. It can be constructed by the tensor products of 1-D wavelet transforms in three subspaces. We choose the symmetric and smoothing filters such as Haar, Linear, PseudoCoiflet, Cubic B-Spline and their corresponding orthogonal wavelets to build the volume pyramid. The surface is reconstructed at each level of volume data by using the cell interpolation method. Some experimental results are shown through the comparison of the different filters based on the distance errors of the surfaces. © 1995 SPIE. All rights reserved.
