We have previously demonstrated that the thermal denaturation of collagen results in a repeatable loss of linear birefringence (LB), which can be measured with birefringence compensation techniques or transmitted or remitted intensity measurements. Consequently, we have used LB to measure the kinetic changes in collagenous tissues. analysis of the birefringence data results in the calculation of the kinetic parameters entropy, (Delta) S, enthalpy, (Delta) H and the rate constant, k. The birefringence data show that multiple kinetic processes are occurring during collagen denaturation. The most likely physical interpretation of the observed data is that structural changes are occurring on the molecular (tropocollagen) as well as the collagen fibril structural levels. Each of these structures contributes to the total birefringence. When a parallel kinetic model, which is composed of two first order exponential decay models, is applied to the birefringence data, excellent agreement between the data and model is seen. Moreover, the data also show that the relative contributions of the two constituent reactions to the total birefringence measured are in excellent agreement with reported values of intrinsic and form birefringence contributions in collagen. The knowledge that multiple reactions exist during collagen denaturation impacts the understanding of how denaturation occurs and what information can be utilized for the control of the heating process.

We apply the theory of (de Finetti) coherent inference to the handling of uncertainty in the process of automatical medical diagnosis. Given some possible diseases (that could explain an initial piece of information) and a tentative probability assessment on them, the data base consists of conditional probabilities P(E/K), where each K is a disease and each evidence E comes from a suitable test. The coherence of the whole assessment is checked. The doctor can now update the probability of each disease and check again coherence of the whole assessment, since the diseases do not constitute, in general, a partition (so that the usual Bayes theorem cannot be applied). These steps can be iterated until a degree of belief sufficient to make a diagnosis is reached: the coherence condition acts as a control tool on every stage.

In color reproduction research, a linear model designed to minimize the error between original surface reflectance spectra and reproduced spectra is useful in the process of producing an accurate color match between the original image and reproduction under a variety of illuminants, but it is inappropriate in efficiency. We propose an efficient linear model based on surface reflectance spectra and a unified wavelength function of CIE 1931 standard observer representing human perceptual property. The surface spectra weighted with the unified wavelength function were introduced to minimize the human perceptual error between original reflectance spectra and reproduced spectra and to reduce the number of the spectral basis functions. The performance of reflectance spectra-to-CIELAB transformation on our proposed linear model is tested and compared with a conventional model based on reflectance spectra under a variety of illuminants. The results of our linear model is superior to that of the conventional model. With Munsell 400 color patches, D65 illuminant and 4-dimensional linear model, the mean color difference of our model is 1.28 CIELAB unit. And an algorithm for color scanner characterization using our model is made and tested, and the results are shown.

In this paper the 3-D Cartesian braiding process is described, and a finite element based method is proposed for determining the mechanical properties of this class of textile composites. In the investigation of the yarn structure of the preform a control volume approach is pursued whereby the paths of the yarns (fibers) entering and leaving a given volume of the preform, coincident with the movements of the yarn carriers on the braiding machine, are observed. A three dimensional representation (fiber architecture) of the braided composite, including the axial yarns, is given. The finite element based method proposed for modeling the braided composite treats the yarns and the matrix as distinct finite elements, with no smearing as is customary in lamination theory. The FE model of the 3-D braided composite is obtained by superposition of these finite element models and application of certain constraints. Estimates of the variation of the elastic constants of the 3-D braided composite are developed as a function of different percentages of axial yarns and `interior braiding angle' for a 50% fiber volume fraction GR/E braided composite. Finally, the predictions of this method are compared with some test data.

Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) or refuse incineration plant is designated to reduce the volume of the refuse and recover the energy from it. The steam generated from a boiler heated by burning refuse is sent to a turbine to generate the electricity. Batch-feeding style and the uncertainty of refuse composites result in periodical and uncertain fluctuation of refuse combustion and then the steam flow rate. The fluctuation could lead to the unsteady generation of the electricity. Moreover, the incomplete combustion of the refuse is often observed. This leads to the poor efficiency of refuse volume reduction and the energy recovery. Therefore, the proper controlled combustion of the refuse will be of both environmental and commercial significance. In this paper, we explore the problems of refuse combustion control and discuss how rule-base fuzzy logic control algorithms can be used to damp the fluctuation of the steam flow rate and achieve more complete combustion of the refuse by properly adjusting the grate rotating rates. The extensive simulations based on the data and information from the Ulu Pandan refuse incineration plant, Singapore, show the effectiveness of the rule-base fuzzy logic controller and indicate that the proposed control algorithm has potential of about 10% increase on the capacity of refuse processing and electricity generation.

This paper addresses the signal modeling problem in colored noise. As contrasted to the reported literatures in which the modeling of a non-Gaussian ARMA signal corrupted by Gaussian noise is studied, this paper focus on the AR modeling of a Gaussian signal embedded in non-Gaussian ARMA noise. The authors show that after prefiltering the output data via the AR polynomial of the non-Gaussian noise model, a new special higher-order Yule-Walker equation which is based on the correlation of the filtered output process can be used to estimate the parameters of the AR Gaussian signal. Simulation examples are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the new approach.

The interest for an integrated autonomous guidance and navigation control package, satisfying to different mission requirements with a common architecture, is becoming very attractive in the perspective to reduce cost mission and to provide significant benefits when measurements noise conditions may change during the mission and safety critical spacecraft operations are involved. In this paper Laben and Honeywell present an interesting approach to integrate an attitude GPS space receiver and a miniaturized inertial measurement unit (MIMU), to enhance the performances of both sensor systems. In traditional G&NC systems, based on Inertial Navigation Sensor (INS) Measurements, long term drift, affecting zero point stability of gyroscope and accelerometer, are integrated over time during the measurement process, resulting in an increasing attitude and navigation error. These errors can be reduced by periodic reset, shifting the problem to the need of on board accurate and precise absolute position and attitude references. A convenient way to overcome such limitation is here discussed making profit of Laben experience, matured as a company leader in on board data handling and space qualified GPS receiver systems, and by Honeywell as a world leader manufacturer of guidance and navigation packages. The approach would be a guideline for a novel scheme of G&NC architecture where a GPS receiver, performing both attitude and orbit determination, and a MIMU that includes three ring laser gyro and three accelerometers, are integrated in a common unit. In such a system, the measurements performed by the sensors are numerically filtered, removing high side frequency bandwidth noise components, to provide accurate and reliable input data for the attitude and navigation algorithms that will be executed by the embedded guidance computer. The results of such elaboration will be directly the actuation values to drive the space vehicle under both operative and non operative conditions,

The main purpose of this paper is to introduce a new method of control loop performance analysis of the closed-loop MIMO process. This new approach is based on filtering and subsequent correlation (FCOR) analysis of the output and the filtered data. The steps required in the implementation of the FCOR algorithm are: (i) estimation of the time delay or the interactor matrix of the MIMO system and (ii) evaluation of control performance with MIMO minimum variance control as a benchmark standard. The proposed algorithm is evaluated by application to a simulated and an industrial process.

Failure prognostics and risk analysis facilitate maintenance scheduling and operation planning of aging mechanical systems (e.g., power and processing plants, aircraft, and civil infrastructures such as bridges and industrial buildings). Decision tools for failure prognostics must have the capability of incorporating the dynamic behavior of material damage under both normal and off-normal operating conditions. This paper presents a nonlinear stochastic model of fatigue damage dynamics and a filter for online estimation of the first two moments of the time-dependent damage accumulation. The results have been verified with experimental data of fatigue damage statistics for the 2024-T3 Aluminum alloy.

This paper presents two practical applications where artificial neural networks have been used to solve difficult process engineering problems. Firstly, the ability of artificial neural networks to provide an accurate process model of a vitrification process is demonstrated on real process data. Vitrification is the process which encapsulates highly active liquid waste in glass to provide a safe and convenient method of storage. The second application again employs artificial neural networks, this time they are applied in a novel way in which they are used to capture non-linear system characteristics and then recalled to provide a means of detecting imminent failure of a vessel used in the vitrification process.
