In this work, we have proposed the use of flow not induced by motion but by active manipulation of the lens focal length. The sequence of images thus obtained are to a great extent equivalent to those generated by camera translation with several distinct advantages: (1) the platform undergoes no perturbation while capturing the image sequences, (2) focus of expansion (FOE) is theoretically constrained to be at the center of the image or close proximity for camera imperfection, and (3) the flow is radial and as a result the correspondence problem, so difficult elsewhere, reduces to a 1-D search problem.

The size and complexity of Space Station has driven the need for an accurate, reliable analytical tool to assess the extravehicular activity (EVA) crew interfaces at the worksite. On previous spacecraft, each worksite was developed and validated through Neutral Buoyancy underwater testing by the crew using mockups. For spacecraft requiring a significant amount of EVA over large areas, like Space Station, the cost of conducting underwater tests for each of the many hundred worksites becomes prohibitive. Therefore, limited testing must be augmented by accurate graphical analysis. The Unigraphics ii, which is the Computer Aided Design (CAD) system for the International Space Station Alpha (ISSA) Product Group 1 design, was selected and developed. It has a major advantage of easy and rapid access to the accurate and updated Space Station design. The design can be rapidly obtained electronically from layouts, detail drawings, assembly drawings or the Electronic Development Fixture (EDF). Also, it allows the structures and mechanical designers to do preliminary worksite layout on the same system they use for design. In addition, several separate models (files) for EVA constraints, support equipment and Extravehicular Mobility Units (EMUs) have been developed so that a particular worksite can be evaluated for access, reach, work envelope and viewing. It lacks some features that other graphics programs such as McDonnell Douglas Human modeling Systems (MDHMS) have, which are: animation, easy graphics manipulation and built in anthropometric data. This UGii technique has been developed and refined over several years (>100 worksites analyzed) and has achieved very high correlation to underwater tests results for worksites on the exterior of the truss. The use of this tool has become a routine but still informal part of the design process. Utilization for verification is another goal which will require further correlation testing utilizing neutral buoyancy and other micro gravi

A novel methodology for digital measuring procedures and digital dataanalysis is presented in order to evaluate an online processcontrol and defect monitoring. That can be done by manufacturing test chips side by side with standard chips and measuring them with the same measuring equipment-the digital tester. To achieve a fast and effective (efficient) measuring procedure and dataanalysis test structures will be modeled in geometry-graphs, neighborhood-graphs and connection-graphs.< >

Summary form only given as follows: The author deals with the importance of analyzing impedance spectroscopy small-signal frequency-response data in ways which are appropriate to yield increased understanding of the underlying physico-chemical processes associated with the data and/or its use for processcontrol and testing. Proper analysis requires complex nonlinear least squares fitting with appropriate weighting, and a well-developed computer program for such fitting is described. The value and power of such analysis is illustrated along with some of its problems. New analysis methods and interpretations are discussed which involve: (a) alternatives to Kronig-Kramers integral transformation; (b) new fitting models appropriate for solid materials; (c) ways of separating and understanding concomitant conduction-relaxation and dielectric-dispersion contributions to the overall response; and (d) estimation of distributions of relaxation times and barrier heights.< >

The paper discusses the enhanced analysis and simulation capabilities provided by the Communications Network modeling Tool (CNMT) designed by Adroit Systems Inc. for Rome Laboratory, Rome NY. The CNMT is a software system that was developed to provide the National Air Intelligence Center (NAIC) of the Air Force with the ability to analyze telecommunications networks with greater efficiency and accuracy. The CNMT's primary information repository is the NAIC LINKS & NODES (L&N) Sybase database. data is imported from the L&N database into the CNMT system that was developed using the ARC/INFO geographic information system (GIS). CNMT allows the data to be displayed geographically with existing map data including vector World data Bank ii and ARC gigitized raster graphics images to enhance the visual relationship between the communications objects and their locations. The CNMT system users are able to develop telecommunications network models for different physical transmission media and overlay logical user network models representing C/sup 2/ chain-of-command hierarchies. Scenario generation provides a flexible, efficient process for defining and loading a combined network with voice and message traffic profiles. Simulation capabilities provide the capability to execute circuit switched and store and forward traffic simulation on network models using a COTS simulation tool (COMNET ii.5) to determine the network's performance characteristics. A collate and display results component provides the capability to further examine the network models and their simulation results.< >

In this paper, a sampled-data generalized predictive control (SDGPC) algorithm is developed. SDGPC is based on a continuous-time state space model with continuous-time quadratic cost function, but the projected future control scenario is assumed to be piecewise constant. In doing so, SDGPC can be implemented digitally without any approximation. By state augmentation, SDGPC produces integral action to track a constant setpoint with zero steady error subject to an unknown constant disturbance. Laguerre filter modeling concepts which have been popular recently in process industry can be integrated into this controller design readily and the resulting sampled-data Laguerre-based GPC (SDLGPC) is suitable for adaptive applications. The closed-loop stability of SDGPC is established and the relation between SDGPC and the discrete-time approach is analyzed. Some simulation examples are presented to illustrate the properties of SDGPC.< >

In this paper, an augmented simplex-lattice mixture design is used to fit a mathematical metamodel for predicting work in process in a flexible manufacturing cell. The average work in process is modeled as a response variable by varying the incoming percentages of different products. Computer simulation is utilized to run different experiments to obtain the required data for fitting the metamodel. The accuracy of the metamodel predictions warrant its use in place of the simulation model, thus eliminating the need for lengthy simulation runs and complicated output analysis. This work provides an example of the utility of mixture experiments in a discrete manufacturing environment.

This paper presents an analysis of force and position data that were generated by a human demonstration of a complex and asymmetrical insertion task. The goal of this paper is to understand human sensing ability so as to apply similar techniques to robotics. The assembly process is modelled using hybrid dynamics which separates discrete states of contact and highlights the changes in contact as the essential parts of the process. The human was blindfolded and only had tactile sense available. Position, velocity and force data were recorded as generated by the human. Both stiffness and mechanical impedance are used to attempt to interpret the human generated data. Surprisingly, both of these methods are inadequate to describe any significant portions of the data. It is argued that classical approaches to the understanding of human manipulation skills are insufficient, and more advanced testing and analysis is needed to effectively understand human force sensing abilities.< >

There is a need for systematic study of modeling and verification techniques for real-time systems to specify and verify the timing characteristics of such systems. We introduce a precedence graph model to specify and analyze the timing behavior of real-time systems. To be able to test our model's suitability in a realistic situation, we modeled some of the components of Solenoidal Detector Collaboration data Acquisition System, UNIDAQ (1993). Furthermore, we investigate the effectiveness of the model for timing analysis for multiprocessing and multiprogramming run-time environments.< >
