There is a need for systematic study of modeling and verification techniques for real-time systems to specify and verify the timing characteristics of such systems. We introduce a precedence graph model to specify and analyze the timing behavior of real-time systems. To be able to test our model's suitability in a realistic situation, we modeled some of the components of Solenoidal Detector Collaboration data Acquisition System, UNIDAQ (1993). Furthermore, we investigate the effectiveness of the model for timing analysis for multiprocessing and multiprogramming run-time environments.< >

Among the advantages offered by the Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs), in the analysis and active control of structures characterized by high modal densities and complexity, it should be mentioned the possibility of optimizing the number and the position of sensors and actuators. This feature can result in a sensible reduction of cost in the analysis and control of large structures and could be of great advantage when some of the points under investigation of the structure are not physically accessible. The first step of research is the validation of the ANN approach to a satisfactory analysis of the structure. Previous papers have highlighted the encouraging results obtained from an ANN implementation for the description of a stiffened aluminum panel behaviour. In that case the ANN was trained with data obtained by a validated FEM (Finite Element Method) structural model. In the simulation phase the ANN estimated the behaviour of all the grid points with data referred only to a portion of points with interesting performances in terms of accuracy and computing time. The present paper describes a measurement system in which the ANN is trained with real data, experimentally obtained by accelerometers. The investigation was carried out considering a sinusoidal excitation, typically produced by the rotating engines of turboprob aircrafts. Real data allowed us to rest the ability of the ANN to learn the structural dynamics taking into the right account the influence of noise, not considered in the previous phase of the research. The experimental results highlight again the good ANN behaviour accuracy in the estimation of all the rest points considered for the analysis. The present research is the necessary premise for ANNs based active control applications in aeronautics and aerospace.< >

Military base closures will affect more than 100 communities across the United States during the next five years. The potential for economic hardship is significant. However, the experience of communities where military bases have closed suggests that the efforts of individual communities during the transition can significantly affect the economic outcome. A PERT simulation model is developed in SLAMSYSTEM to provide a tool for communities that illustrates recovery, takes the impact of job loss into account and gives insight into the implications for a manufacturing organization. An engineering analysis is applied to a problem that has previously been modeled strictly by economists. The PERT simulation model combines the network modeling and continuous modeling concepts in SLAM. It allows the initial conditions and activity times in the base transition process model to control the governing equation for jobs created at a site. data is collected through a survey of community representatives in communities where the transition is already completed. It is determined that simulation modeling is a reliable method of understanding community influences on successful military base transitions.

In order to investigate characteristics of the mechanism of neuromotor control for movements of upper and lower human extremities, by using a computer simulation method, the whole process comprising the generation of motor commands at the neural level, the contraction of muscles at the physiological level, and movements of the extremities at the dynamic level is modeled for computer-programming. At the neural level, the changes in the degree of contraction of muscles which are necessary for the movement of extremities are estimated from the target dynamic action, and the change in motor commands for the muscle contraction is derived. Then, through the changes in muscle contraction and corresponding muscle force at the physiological level, three-dimensional movement of the upper extremities and movement of the lower extremities in the sagittal plane are synthesized, and the force acting at the action point is derived, using anatomical structure models at the dynamic level. The model is designed with special regard to the analysis of the reflex action induced by prestretching of muscles, so that the result of simulation at each stage of the processes of the generation and modification of motor commands can be related to the observed electromyographic data.< >

Computer integrated manufacturing (CIM) is the process of organizing manufacturing companies under the control of a common information system to enhance their competitiveness. To achieve this result models are needed to identify activities, data and resources of an enterprise and to create the right relationships between them. Presently several international standardization bodies are pursuing the objective to define a commonly accepted reference model and development methodology for CIM systems. From the analysis of the proposals a great affinity emerges between these standardization efforts and the techniques commonly adopted in the realm of software engineering to describe a software development process exploiting an object oriented (OO) paradigm. This paper reviews, in particular, the main results of two international activities in the field of CIM standardization, analysing and harmonizing the different proposals in the light of OO techniques. Finally, the authors propose a pattern of classes of objects for the design of CIM systems that answers to the need of a unifying framework discussing in detail an example of application of the solution proposed.< >

This paper describes a full custom ASIC realization of different kinds of photosensitive cells in a CMOS 1.2 /spl mu/m and two levels of metal technology which is normally used for the design of digital data processing architectures (ES2). Each cell is directly controlled by a MOS transistor and the photocurrent produced by a luminous flux can be modulated by applying an appropriate gate voltage. The objective of the study and characterization of such cells is to design a array of photosensitive cells where a current directly proportional to the incident luminous flux is produced for each cell. Besides the integration time, or exposure time, and the instant the electrical information is read are different for each cell (or pixel) and independent of its location in the array. The authors first present the results obtained by a static study (e.g. under a constant luminous flux) before discussing the dynamic analysis where the discharge of the photodiode capacitor has been studied as a function of the luminous flux, the integration time and the reading moment. Moreover, the active surface area as well as the design techniques are also been considered in the authors' comparison criteria.< >

Neural networks, statistical analysis, and expert systems have been successfully applied to a number of process industries for the purpose of process modeling and control. In most of the applications, it is often beneficial to integrate statistical methods with neural networks due to the similarity of neural network training and statistical modeling. The main focus of the paper is to combine statistical methods into neural network training in various steps including data pre-processing, variable selection, network training and testing, and post validation. The statistical methods addressed here are outlier detection, missing data replacement, partial least squares regression, principal component analysis, and cross-validation. A framework of using an expert system to guide the procedures to build a neural network is proposed.

Many preprocessors have been developed for traffic signal operation software to ease the tedious data input process or to perform error trapping on the input data. However, work to date on the development of postprocessors to assist in the analysis and presentation of results has been very limited. This paper describes a computer program called PASSER ii-90 analysis Package (PAP) which functions as a postprocessor to PASSER ii-90. Some examples are given to show how this program may be applied to help analyze, therefore design, traffic control parameters. PAP iterates PASSER ii-90 in a batch mode over a user-specified range for four controllable traffic control parameters;arterial phase sequence, cycle length, minimum 'A' direction band split, and minimum green times. The Measures of Effectiveness (MOE's) are extracted from each PASSER ii-90 execution and stored in a database file containing the input parameter values used for iteration. Users can select any two parameters from a database to plot two-dimensional graphs or to perform linear regression modeling. The capability to analyze arterial phase sequences is emphasized. Multi-line and multi-scatter plots are predefined for plotting MOE's corresponding to existing and alternate/optimal phase sequences. In addition, a percentage chart can be created to exam the sensitivity or robustness of an intersection with respect to the phase sequence.

An integrated inspection system for improving the accuracy of CNC machine tools is proposed. The system described in this paper emphasizes the integration of the on-machine inspection and analysis techniques with the information coming from post-process and on- machine inspection to improve machine performance automatically. Algorithms are derived for analyzing the post-process and on-machine inspection data to identify residual systematic errors and relate them to the machine performance. Various data analysis algorithms and techniques are compared. A feature comparison approach is developed to relate the dimensional and form errors of a manufactured workpiece to the systematic machine tool errors. Inverse kinematics technique and statistical methods are used to identify and characterize the contribution of each geometric error component. A self tuning algorithm is also proposed to fine tune the geometric-thermal model.
