This paper presents a data-driven simulation of a network using manufacturing blocking to control work-in-process, and this simulation is c2aled BNS for Blocking Network Simulation. The model is object oriented and is constructed in C++ using an object-oriented simulation environment called HOSE. The structure of the data- driven network simulator is illustrated with examples of the underlying code. An important feature of the model is a sequential procedure for determining run length to achieve statistical precision in an output performance measure. An illustrative example compares the performance of BNS with a queueing network approximation. The principal conclusion is that the data-driven network simulation can be applied by users with minimal simulation knowledge as a rapid modeling tool.

We describe a software system used at the Advanced Light Source for accelerator physics studies and accelerator control. The system consists of a number of Unix processes that can be connected together in modular ways. processes communicate using messages with a common data format, but processes do not know where their messages come from or go to, making each process easily replaceable by others using different algorithms, measurement techniques, or models. Some of the controls and correction functions we have implemented using the system are closed-orbit correction, continuous tune display, and Fourier analysis of turn-by-turn beam position monitor (BPM) data.< >

Voice sources are modeled as discrete-time on-off processes; video sources with uniform activity level are modeled by a discrete-time birth-death process; and, the arrival process from an aggregation of data sources is assumed to form a Bernoulli process with a general bulk size distribution. The integration of these processes belongs to a family of processes, the discrete-time batch Markovian arrival processes (D-BMAP). An ATM multiplexer whose input consists of a mix of the different types of traffic described above can therefore be modeled as a D-BMAP/D/1 queueing system. The authors investigate an approximation which matches the original traffic model to a two-state D-BMAP. This procedure results in greatly reduced complexity allowing it to be used for network traffic control while retaining accurate performance prediction.< >

It is desirable that an interactive simulation of accelerator operation be developed in order to write and test commissioning, correction, supervisory control, closed loop control, optimization and automation code prior to machine construction. The simulator should produce realistic diagnostic information, analyze and display the information at a workstation, accept operator input, and react appropriately. Such a system has been developed by the Accelerator System control Simulator Collaboration to model the Low Energy Booster (LEB). The system is implemented on a 64 node INTEL ISPC/860 parallel computer which operates at approximately 600 Mflops. The simulator can track 512 particles on 32 nodes at 1 turn per second using an element by element symplectic integrator based on the TEAPOT algorithm. An operator interface has been implemented on a SUN Space 2 workstation operating as a client to a VME based 68040 processor board running VxWorks real time operating system. data display and operator input utilize the operator interface routines in the EPICS control system. data access between the SPARC Card and the HYPERCUBE is accomplished currently with an interprocess connection. Pattern recognition using Principal Component Models was applied to process supervision of an industrial fed-batch fermentation. In a first step, a classification scheme was developed from historical data to classify runs into two classes according to their final yield (high or low) without process-specific knowledge. In a subsequent step, this scheme was used on-line to predict the range of the final yield. It is shown that the scheme might assist a process operator in detecting major disturbances (e.g. low yields, contamination) at an early stage.

The tendency modeling approach for optimization, estimation, and control is applied to bioreactors. This approach uses a `tendency' or `grey' model based on the available fundamental knowledge of the process and emphasizes the incorporation of new processdata. The technique is demonstrated on simulation studies and preliminary experimental results of the penicillin fermentation. The tendency model is based on reactor mass balances such as those proposed by Bajpai and Reuss (1980) while the number of overall reactions and their stoichiometry are derived by abstract factor analysis of experimental data. Actual process and equipment constraints, such as the power mounted to the fermentor, the oxygen transfer capacity, and the rheological characteristics of the broth, are added. The model can be updated periodically utilizing data collected both on-line and off-line. The updated model can be used off-line to develop optimal feeding policies. On-line, a Kalman filter can utilize the tendency model to estimate poorly, infrequently, or unmeasured states.
