The papers in this volume comprise the refereed proceedings of the conference Arti- cial Intelligence in theory and Practice (IFIP AI 2010), which formed part of the 21st World Computer Congress of IFIP, the International Federation for Information Pr- essing (WCC-2010), in Brisbane, Australia in September 2010. The conference was organized by the IFIP Technical Committee on Artificial Int- ligence (Technical Committee 12) and its Working Group 12.5 (Artificial Intelligence Applications). All papers were reviewed by at least two members of our Program Committee. - nal decisions were made by the Executive Program Committee, which comprised John Debenham (University of technology, Sydney, Australia), Ilias Maglogiannis (University of Central Greece, Lamia, Greece), Eunika Mercier-Laurent (KIM, France) and myself. The best papers were selected for the conference, either as long papers (maximum 10 pages) or as short papers (maximum 5 pages) and are included in this volume. The international nature of IFIP is amply reflected in the large number of countries represented here. I should like to thank the conference Chair, Tharam Dillon, for all his efforts and the members of our Program Committee for reviewing papers under a very tight de- line.

The articles in this volume were selected for presentation at the Sixth Inter- tional conference on Rough Sets and Current Trends in Computing (RSCTC 2008), which took place on October 23–25 in Akron, Ohio, USA. The conference is a premier event for researchersand industrial professionals interested in the theory and applications of rough sets and related methodo- gies. Since its introduction over 25 years ago by Zdzislaw Pawlak, the theory of rough sets has grown internationally and matured, leading to novel applications and theoretical works in areas such as datamining and knowledgediscovery, machine learning, neural nets, granular and soft computing, Web intelligence, pattern recognition and control. The proceedings of the conferences in this - ries, as well as in Rough Sets and knowledgetechnology (RSKT), and the Rough Sets, Fuzzy Sets, datamining and Granular Computing (RSFDGrC) series report a variety of innovative applications of rough set theory and of its extensions. Since its inception, the mathematical rough set theory was closely connected to application ?elds of computer science and to other areas, such as medicine, which provided additional motivation for its further development and tested its real-life value. Consequently, rough set conferences emphasize the - teractionsandinterconnectionswith relatedresearchareas, providingforumsfor exchanging ideas and mutual learning. The latter aspect is particularly imp- tant since the development of rough set-related applications usually requires a combination of often diverse expertise in rough sets and an application ?eld.

As future generation information technology (FGIT) becomes specialized and fr- mented, it is easy to lose sight that many topics in FGIT have common threads and, because of this, advances in one discipline may be transmitted to others. Presentation of recent results obtained in different disciplines encourages this interchange for the advancement of FGIT as a whole. Of particular interest are hybrid solutions that c- bine ideas taken from multiple disciplines in order to achieve something more signi- cant than the sum of the individual parts. Through such hybrid philosophy, a new principle can be discovered, which has the propensity to propagate throughout mul- faceted disciplines. FGIT 2009 was the first mega-conference that attempted to follow the above idea of hybridization in FGIT in a form of multiple events related to particular disciplines of IT, conducted by separate scientific committees, but coordinated in order to expose the most important contributions. It included the following international conferences: Advanced Software Engineering and Its Applications (ASEA), Bio-Science and Bio-technology (BSBT), Control and Automation (CA), database theory and Application (DTA), D- aster Recovery and Business Continuity (DRBC; published independently), Future G- eration Communication and Networking (FGCN) that was combined with Advanced Communication and Networking (ACN), Grid and Distributed Computing (GDC), M- timedia, Computer Graphics and Broadcasting (MulGraB), Security technology (SecTech), Signal Processing, Image Processing and Pattern Recognition (SIP), and- and e-Service, Science and technology (UNESST).
